I am soooooooooooo proud of you for accepting this calling. Having once served as Stake Nursery Leader, Back in the dark ages.... You KNOW I am soooooo temted to pray more blessings on your head. However, I still Have that check for a million dollars that you wrote me, before your first book was published, just for rocking and crooning that youngest to sleep. Check is framed, but now I can frame you and ask, may I cash it now? I have 20 grandchilren as of June 1st, 2008 so could use the coins. 3 Eagles and 3 missions and their weddings and the receptions, and then the 6 girls....oh my....maybe I should call the Bishop and volunteer.... On second thought I'll just wish you Happy 30th Anniversary. Isn't it about time you went to England again.....I'm sure they have nursery and nappys over there

Between my three kids I spent plenty of time in nursery. Actually a lot more then I wanted to. It's amazing how different each child's personality can be. One of my children refused to be left alone for almost six months. I kept trying to sneak out and let them play but he just started crying and wouldn't stop until I came back in.

My youngest is five now and I'm very glad that those years are behind me now.

Oh gee! It makes me feel slightly guilty when people say nursery is one of the best callings. What are some of the other "best callings?" I vote for the calling as primary pianist. One time I even took in a diet Coke in a plain brown paper bag since the pianist is hidden behind the piano. My all-time favorite is teaching Relief Society.

Nice post. I have spent quite a bit of time in Nursery lately with my two year old. Isn't there some rule about having two adults in the nursery at all times?

Anyway, I have enjoyed the many Sundays chillin' with the toddlers, waiting for the official Nursery workers to show up, strolling in late to elder's quorum or what have you. I would just suggest we cut the sugar we're giving these little dynamos. They're hyperactive gerbils on speed anyway. No need to dump jet fuel in their tanks.

If I hadn't been so terrified at the time of the parents being in there, I may have laughed too. So funny. And trust me, the visual WAS hilarious. That first Sunday (picture me shaking, sweaty palms, waiting for the kids to enter my classroom so I could begin the lesson I planned to read verbatim due to the language issue) I recall thinking how cute that was that the little kids were trying to emulate their dads with their briefcases in miniature. I think my jaw literally dropped when all seven or eight parents came in and SAT DOWN, and then later when the kids started getting their food out one by one. So funny. My nerves were shot. The next Sunday I began launching my Get Rid of the Parents Campaign in earnest.

When it came time for me to leave Austria, the primary presidency was sad to see me go...said they had no idea how I managed to get the youngest class in primary to be the most reverent class. It was just not done in their culture ~ the kids were allowed to wander around during Sacrament Meeting too, which also took me some time to get used to. Now, I kind of like that approach of letting kids be kids. We grow up and conform so fast, that those years can be priceless. I kind of wish I had had a bit more freedom to be a kid while I was one.

Lisa ~

This was very well-written. I've only ever served in nursery once, and that was in Austria as an exchange student when I was 18, and I had many younger siblings and no fear of kids, but the language barrier was so daunting. I just sat there while the grandmother who was the leader of nursery did it all.

They moved me after a couple weeks to teaching Sunbeams, and it was a lot better. A funny thing I just recalled that I had forgotten until now (and which has zero to do with anything) ~ those Austrian kids all had one or both parents accompany them to our class every single Sunday. They would stay the entire time. I was taken aback, and way intimidated (language barrier again) and it took me about three or four weeks, but I was finally able to wean the parents off of coming to class. Whew. Another funny cultural thing: each of those three year olds brought a small briefcase with them, and whenever they felt like it, they'd open it up in the middle of whatever I was doing and would whip out a sandwich, cookies, and drink. So funny.

Lisa,
I am right there with you on not feeling very comfortable around kids. Also, its so true about your own kids. There is just something different. Plus, I'm a man and we live in a horrible time when abuse is such a constant fear. I feel some weird obligation to keep my distance from other people's kids. That's probably just my neurosis.

At least now I know exactly what to volunteer for if I am called to the nursery.
