My father, who used to live in Paris and was very active in the church there, told me the church had acquired land for a temple which it held onto for a while, but eventually sold. This was maybe 15-20 years ago. Don't remember the specifics, but I wish I did.

I have heard reference to a talk given by Pres Kimball in a 1976 Area Conference in Paris, wherein he supposedly specified the future location of a temple in France. I am unable to find more details - if anyone knows where I could find that talk, I'd appreciate it.

#4 - That line came from the LDS Temple website, but I did a bit more digging on it:

Joseph Fielding Smith in "Way to Perfection" page 289 expanding on a quote by Joseph Smith:

A GRAND COUNCIL SOON TO BE

Not many years hence there shall be another gathering of high priests and righteous souls in this same valley of Adam-ondi-Ahman. At this gathering Adam, the Ancient of Days, will again be present. At this time the vision which Daniel saw will be enacted. The Ancient of Days will sit. There will stand before him those who have held the keys of all dispensations, who shall render up their stewardships to the first Patriarch of the race, who holds the keys of salvation. This shall be a day of judgment and preparation. Joseph, the Prophet, in speaking of this event, said:

Daniel in his seventh chapter speaks of the Ancient of Days; he means the oldest man, our father Adam, Michael; he will call his children together and hold a council with them to prepare them for the coming of the Son of Man. He (Adam) is the father of the human family, and presides over the spirits of all men, and all that have had the keys must stand before him in this grand council. This may take place before some of us leave this stage of action. The Son of Man stands before him (Adam) and there is given him glory and dominion. Adam delivers up his stewardship to Christ, that which was delivered to him as holding the keys of the universe, but retains his standing as head of the human family.-D. H. C. 3:386-7.

#4 "Prophecy, Key to the Future" AUTHOR: Duane S. Crowther, is a good general source that covers this event, although there maybe others.

#3 "due to marital infidelity among Portuguese church members"...Yeap, and people say the French are immoral!

Adam-ondi-Ahman is the site of a future grand council where Jesus Christ will meet with His stewards of all dispensations and receive back the keys of the kingdom in preparation for His Second Coming. Only those called to the meeting will know of its occurence.

Jeff,
Do you have a reference for that last sentence? I hadn't heard that before.

Benjamin,

Here is the only thing I could find on a "Lisbon" Temple:

"Even in relatively fast-growing Portugal there seems to be a kind of mission "lore" that a temple had been planned for Lisbon, but the site was
switched to Madrid even though fewer members reside in Spain, due to marital infidelity among Portuguese church members." ("Mormon Membership Trends in
Europe Among People of Color: Present and Future Assessment," C. Gary Lobb, Dialogue, Volume 33, Number 4, Winter 2000)

So while Portugal seems to have the most members per capita in Europe, there are other issues which keep a Temple from being built there.

I am reasonably certain, but cannot confirm, that at one point there was a temple announced in Lisbon Portugal, but that this was eventually built in Madrid Spain for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is the extremely low activity rate within Portugal. Anyone who can confirm this would be appreciated.
