yes, gbsmith, I agree. I guess the readers we have are more interested in social aspects of mormonism than science aspects. plus, dna is a tough issue to comprehend anyway.

MH, I'm a little surprised that there hasn't been a bit more interest in this subject both from the half full as well as the half empty group. Maybe everyone is still trying to decide how we "know" and if in the end it matters much in the grand scheme of things.

Yes, most people have the same problem with the Malay Theory as well--for that matter lugging heavy plates from South or Central America too. The only theory that makes the plates in NY easy are the Great Lakes Theories. But those Indians are stone age technologically, wouldn't have created the metalworks Nephi mentioned, and the DNA doesn't match either.

If God parted the Red Sea, or flooded the earth, surely getting the plates to NY is no problem for him. (Yes, it's not exactly scientific, but neither was Joseph's explanation for how he got the plates either.)

The part I never quite get my head around is the final "trek to upstate New York" thing...tough from Central America, but from South Africa?

gbsmith, I think this is one of those cases where the glass is half full or half empty. critics of the bom will point out differences as you did, while proponents will point out similarities. as I look at the lemba, it gives an interesting angle of 'dark' lamanites.

I guess what I get from this is the lack of similarities. In the Lemba there's a surviving oral tradition and physical sites that can be associated with them and their travels. Plus there is a dna link that's identifiable and reproducible. In the case of Lehi and the Book of Mormon story it seems that all of those are in dispute or not in evidence. Maybe I'm missing something but I don't think so.

yes, heber, the lemba speak one of the african languages, but have embraced hebrew as well. as the anthropologist said, they have carried their jewish traditions on through oral, rather than written history.

Very interesting. I guess it shows how Lehi really was inspired by God to get the brass plates and keep a record of his people.

It doesn't seem like the Lemba really have a record that is found that tells much about their story..so lots is left to archeologists to surmise and looking at the Lemba today and what customs still exist, but it doesn't sound like there are much in regard to documentation, is there?
