Is there always a Trigger before Revelation? – James Leverich

Is there always a Trigger before Revelation? – James Leverich

I’ve always felt in my own life there needs to be a need before I get divine help or inspiration. For example if I’m having problems with patience with my children or wife at home, I pray that I will have more patience and try to get more understanding for my lack of patience. Patience is the need or trigger.

A California Mormon visits the other Zion

A California Mormon visits the other Zion

By Joe Geisner (guest blogger) No I am not talking about Utah. I left Sam Brannan’s Zion for Joseph Smith’s Zion on April 11, 2008. I arrived at about 4 pm in Kansas City airport and almost froze to death waiting for the rental car shuttle. I had left 80 degree weather for 40 degree weather and began to wonder who really was the prophet? Obviously it was Brannan. The temperature never rose above 45 degrees, and we had snow in April!

the stuff of loving

March 20, 2008
By

This post is by Heather B.   I believe that transparency is the way we love. A friend once told me, “You can’t love someone if you can’t talk to them.” I think we were discussing boys or dating at the time, but the older I get, the more I agree with her.

Bookends #2: Book of Mormon Studies–Orson Pratt

February 22, 2008
By

Today’s post is by Terry Foraker.  Ever since its initial publication in 1830, the Book of Mormon has been the subject of countless studies.  This post is the first of a series to introduce those who may be familiar with these studies to some of the more prominent of these writings as a starting point.  While the series is not meant to be comprehensive, and though it is admittedly saturated with my own bias, hopefully it will be a helpful introduction to the rich literature examining the Book of Mormon from a variety of angles.Shortly after the Church was...

Who are these Anti-Mormons?

February 19, 2008
By

This post is by Heather B.  I’m not a member of the LDS church, although I was once. I’ve had many members ask me over the years, why we left. When I try to explain, I tend to get cut off mid sentence, with protests about how the sources or people I am quoting are Anti-Mormon (insert ominous music here).

For time and all eternity

January 31, 2008
By

This post is by Heather B.  My husband and I were married and sealed to each other in an LDS temple over 6 years ago. We were surrounded by around 30 of his closest friends and family, but none of mine. I was a convert to the church of about 2 years when we married, and since we decided to get married in our home state, none of my close friends could make the ceremony (we were students at BYU at the time). My family members were not at all interested in joining the church, and sat outside during...

Mothers

January 27, 2008
By

This post was by Chris W.  Our 1 year old has had a stomach bug the last couple of days – lots of laundry + little sleep = no fun. Watching my wife in action reminded me of something Lorenzo Snow said: A mother who has brought up a family of faithful children ought to be saved if she never does another good thing.

Bigfoot, the Three Nephites and the Lost Tribes of Israel

January 23, 2008
By

Today’s post is by SuperNerd.  I would like to give a shout out to all the Ward crazies…Where have you all gone? Every Ward has them and every Ward needs them for comic relief. You know who I’m talking about, that member of the ward who bears his/her testimony every month and always has a miraculous story about angels, the Three Nephites, Bigfoot, the return of the Lost Tribes of Israel, the building of New Jerusalem or some other end time event. As a teenager my friends and I used to sit in the back pew next to the...

Someday we’ll find it, the rainbow connection…

January 21, 2008

This post is by Heather B.  About a week ago, I had to explain death to my four year old. It was one of those conversations that every parent hopes to put off for as long as possible, and made a little more complicated by the circumstances.

Scientologists – The Only Ones Who Can Really Help

January 18, 2008
By

This post is by Chris W.  You may have seen this video of Tom Cruise floating around the tubes. It’s a video from an award ceremony where Tom was given some kind of medal for being an upstanding scientologist. It’s jargon-ridden, so it’s hard to follow what’s going on most of the time, but there are some priceless gems of Maverick wisdom. Money quote: “When you’re a Scientologist, and you drive by an accident, you know you have to do something about it, because you know you’re the only one who can really help… We are the way to...

McConkie In Action

January 16, 2008
By

Today’s post is by Wade Nelson.  I hope this doesn’t come across as a slam on Elder McConkie. While I disagree with many of his teachings and writings, I respect him for his devotion, integrity, and commitment. What follows is an anecdote from my family history that exemplifies how that devotion and commitment became action.

Family Concerns

January 15, 2008
By

Today’s post is by Wade Nelson.  Apart from a brother who has been inactive for many years, I come from a family whose members have been active and faithful their entire lives. I am something of an oddity (read: black sheep) with my concern and interest in the intellectual side of the gospel. My siblings evince little if any interest in the things that matter to me about the church. Over the holidays I spoke to one sister about the Delbert Stapley letter to George Romney. While she was not hostile, she believed that his attitude was common for...

I’m Right and Everyone Else is Wrong!

January 14, 2008
By

Today’s post is by Zane Chartrand.  When I was a missionary I once knocked on a door and after I had introduced my companion and I and identified us as missionaries with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints he welcomed us with open arms and invited us to come into his house and talk to him. We were thrilled because everyone else that morning had rejected us. We went in and were invited to sit in some chairs in his living room and he told us that he was really excited to meet us. I became...

Bookends #1: The Screwtape Letters

January 14, 2008
By

Today’s post is by Terry Foraker.  Welcome to Bookends, a new column where I give you a peek over my shoulder at what I am currently reading and hopefully toss out a quasi-thoughtful question or two.  The other night I finished listening to the audio version of The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis.  (There are actually two or three audio versions floating around; I recommend the one read by John Cleese of Monty Python fame.  He brilliantly brings out both the pomposity and the sinister humor in the work; this recording won the Grammy award for best spoken word...
