Looking for a Few New Collaborators/Writers/Podcasters

September 29, 2010
By

Mormon Matters is looking for a few new collaborators to re-work the design and purpose/mission of the blog.  We are basically considering 2 things: Bringing back the weekly panel podcast format, adding in live calls from listeners to the mix (like we’ve done a few times on Mormon Stories), and Looking to turn Mormon Matters into more of a Huffington Post-like blog for Mormon issues

This post has been removed, along w/ all comments. It was found to be totally objectionable by virtually everyone: believers and unbelievers alike….including most of the perma-bloggers on this blog. What a disaster. The Management P.S.  For a first-hand account of the meeting w/ Elder Marlin Jensen, click here.

A New Church? — The New Mormon.org PR/Marketing Campaign

Hey.  If you haven’t seen it yet….a new Mormon.org PR campaign is upon us…and all I can say is…”Wow.” Seriously.  Wow. An “independently minded womn”.  A priesthood-holding black man in an interracial marriage.  Working moms (too many to link to here in one sentence).  An apparently non-garment-wearing skateboarding photographer of partially naked women who claims that God wants us all to be individualistic and not robots or chess pieces. Awesome. Seriously.  So……awesome.  This is a brand of Mormonism I can stand squarely behind.

Looking for an Apologist to Discuss Book of Mormon for Podcast

May 7, 2010
By

MM Community, I’m looking to do a podcast series for Mormon Stories on Book of Mormon Historicity and DNA.  I’ve approached Mike Ash to participate, and he has politely declined (I’m waiting to hear back on his reasons).  I’ve also approach FAIR, and am waiting to hear back. In case FAIR/FARMS decide not participate, do any of you know anyone who is a believer in Book of Mormon authenticity, who is able AND willing to discuss Book of Mormon historicity and DNA issues on a podcast?  I offered Mike Ash and FAIR the questions in advance, and an opportunity...

Top 10 Reasons Why This Mormon is Excited About the South Park “Book of Mormon” Broadway Musical

Top 10 Reasons Why This Mormon is Excited About the South Park “Book of Mormon” Broadway Musical

Yep.  Those wacky, irreverent South Park guys (Trey Parker and Matt Stone) are up to their old shenanigans.  They’re bringing down the irreverence anvil once again with a mighty blow to the head of organized religion — and (yet again) Mormons are the target.  As if this and this and this and this were not enough Mormon mischief, Parker and Stone have announced the pending release of their newly penned Broadway musical to be titled: “The Book of Mormon” (LDS Church lawyers permitting, of course).  As we read from the New York Post: “The Book of Mormon” will juxtapose a...

Greg Prince at USU 2010 — The Audio

Greg Prince at USU 2010 — The Audio

Greg Prince, author of David O. McKay and the Rise of Modern Mormonism, was here at USU today.  For those interested, I recorded the audio for both of his presentations. The first was delivered in front of Dr. Philip Barlow’s undergraduate Joseph Smith class, and dealt mostly with the writing of his book (from a historian’s perspective). Presentation #1 The second was more like a keynote, and dealt primarily with his main observations from his book about President McKay. Presentation #2 For those so inclined, please enjoy!

Mormon Stories # 112 & 113: Joanna Brooks Parts 1 and 2

Mormon Stories # 112 & 113: Joanna Brooks Parts 1 and 2

I recorded my first Mormon Stories podcast in some time w/ professor, author and mother Joanna Brooks, and thought it might be nice to discuss these episodes here on Mormon Matters. For some background, Joanna was a very important figure in the uber-controversial BYU Academic Freedom days of 1990-1993…and is now a writer on Mormon topics for Religion Dispatches (along w/ being the Dept. Chair of English at SDSU).  She was also recently featured on RadioWest to discuss the phenomenon of Glenn Beck.  As you may remember from her post earlier this week, Joanna has recently started an advice-column blog entitled “AskMormonGirl.com“, and...

Mormon Stories 2.0 – And How You Can Help

Hey Folks, Some of you may have heard that I’ve decided to bring back Mormon Stories Podcast.  For those of you who are new to the ‘Nacle or who never listened previously, Mormon Stories is an audio podcast interview series (kind of like Fresh Air with Terry Gross or Speaking of Faith with Krista Tippet), where I interview Mormons of all types — from Richard Bushman to Grant Palmer — and give them a chance to tell their stories.  The full archive of my past interviews can be found here. Mormon Stories 1.0 (2005-2007) was focused on two main...

LDS Church News Says: “Use Proper Sources” With Gospel Teaching

January 11, 2010
By

(Hat tip to Michael Carpenter) This just in from LDS Church News.  Correlation remains king. “A gospel teacher is not called to choose the subject of the lesson but to teach and discuss what has been specified. Gospel teachers should also be scrupulous to avoid hobby topics, personal speculations, and controversial subjects. The Lord’s revelations and the directions of His servants are clear on this point.” and “The Church — through its inspired correlation program — has given us official sources of information to help us prepare lessons and plan activities. Instead of turning to unofficial books and Web...

“Pretender” Mormons?

January 7, 2010
By

(Hat tip to Antonio Parr at BCC) To get this post, you’re either gonna have to spend 7 minutes listening to this song ..or be a Jackson Browne fan….but here’s my question: How many of you out there have fallen prey…at one time or another….to being a “Pretender” Mormon?  And I don’t mean pretending to be Mormon.  I mean falling into the middle-class life of which Jackson Browne so eloquently (and slightly condescendingly) sings, after some youthful phase of idealism.  I know I have at times.  More importantly, have any of you found a way to successfully escape?  Or is...

Josh and Susan Powell, and an LDS Ultimatum — “Get Active, or I’m Leaving With the Kids”

Josh and Susan Powell, and an LDS Ultimatum — “Get Active, or I’m Leaving With the Kids”

(This post has been updated) Just saw this blurb in the Deseret News this morning: When Josh and Susan Powell were first married, both were very active in the LDS Church, Petersen said. They were sealed in the temple. But once they moved to Utah, Josh Powell stopped attending church. Petersen said the Powells’ marriage counselor instructed Susan Powell to set specific goals. Susan Powell told her husband that her goal was for him to become active in the church again by the end of 2009 and to have his temple recommend again by their anniversary in the spring....

5 Questions After 5 Years – From A Longtime ‘Nacle Wannabe

August 20, 2009
By

A cross-post from Nine Moons — written by John Dehlin by request of Rusty Clifton — in celebration of Nine Moons’ 5-year anniversary. ========= Most of you won’t know me. I used to blog/podcast back in the day, but was never really part of the official Bloggernacle community (as defined by those invested in the term). I was (and am) a ‘Nacle Wannabe. A big thanks to Rusty for the invitation to write. He’s always been really cool to me. Same w/ Ronan, JNS, SV, ECS, Kaimi, KH, BIV, DKL, Kiskilili, Hamer, Danithew, Ann, Aaron Brown — and a few...

Friends in Utah and in Surrounding States — Seeing Ralph Nader speak (as a Congressional Intern) was a highlight of my life.  He remains a hero of mine to this day.  Our good friend Ashley Sanders is hosting a house party tonight for Mr. Nader (for those who can still make it), and if ya’ll get the chance, you definitely should consider going to hear him speak when he comes to Utah on July 31st.  Information below and attached for both events.  Go Nader!  Go Ash!!!!  And please spread the word!!!
