<p>2) This great sermon was delivered mostly to the MEN who would form the leadership of his movement, even though there is no reason to believe that the listeners were all men.  (I personally believe there were women present.)</p>
<p>QUESTION:</p>
<blockquote><p>Did the gender composition of the listening group have an impact on the content of the sermon?</p></blockquote>
<p>Generally speaking, the list of attributes included in the Beatitudes are considered throughout history to be feminine.  Jesus was speaking primarily to men about how to change and grow (repent) and become godlike.  So,</p>
<p>1) Might the Sermon on the Mount have been different if the primary audience had been women?  If so, how?</p>
<p>2) How can we take the general message of repentance (change and growth and the acquisition of godly characteristics) and use it to achieve the proper balance we need to become &#8220;perfect&#8221; (complete, whole, fully developed)?</p>
<p>3) Must every individual acquire all the characteristics listed &#8211; or can a spouse/companion share that endeavor and, between two, create one united, balanced, &#8220;prefect&#8221; whole?</p>

		<description><![CDATA[A week ago, I attended the viewing and funeral of a man in our stake who died of an unexpected heart attack.  He was in his 50&#8242;s, had just been to the doctor and been pronounced fit as a fiddle, was losing weight and feeling great. He was the Bishop of his ward, and his wife had been cancer free for just over a year.  His son flew home for the weekend, after which he returned to finish his mission. I spoke with his wife briefly at the viewing, and something she said has been weighing on my mind ever since.  She said, essentially: He lost his mother about six weeks ago, and his aunt passed away five days later.  We had reached peace with death and were focused on life. I know it will be hard in a couple of weeks when everyone gets back to their own lives and I am alone to deal with not having him here, but I believe in the Atonement, the Plan of Salvation and the promises of the temple.  It will be hard, but I will be OK. What I want to share from this experience is not related directly to those [...]]]></description>

<p>He was the Bishop of his ward, and his wife had been cancer free for just over a year.  His son flew home for the weekend, after which he returned to finish his mission. <span id="more-5347"></span>I spoke with his wife briefly at the viewing, and something she said has been weighing on my mind ever since.  She said, essentially:</p>

<p>What I want to share from this experience is not related directly to those things she mentioned at the end (the Atonement, Plan and temples), but what she said at the beginning &#8211; being at peace.</p>
<p>As much as anything else, when I die I want to be at peace with death &#8211; <strong>but I also want to be at peace with life</strong>.  I don&#8217;t want to be bitter or angry or upset before I die &#8211; and I don&#8217;t want to live in that state, either; I want to be at peace.</p>
<p>I believe that is up to me &#8211; that it is my responsibility.  The natural man inclination is to blame others for our feelings &#8211; for whether or not we are at peace.  I understand the necessity for anger, grief and/or cognitive dissonance when certainty is shattered, ambiguity accelerates and testimony is tried.  I really do get that need.  However, I believe reconciliation of some kind that leads to peace and charity is critical.</p>
<p>I wish I had an easy answer.  I wish I had a universal, practical method that I knew would work for every individual.  The only answer I have is that there is peace in letting go &#8211; that there is peace in cutting others slack &#8211; there is peace in real charity &#8211; there is peace in the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  <strong>There isn&#8217;t always peace in the human organizations in which that Gospel is interpreted and taught, just as there isn&#8217;t always peace in even the most ideal families</strong>, but the peace the Gospel brings can influence and strengthen the peace that then can be brought individually into the Church &#8211; the community of spiritual family.</p>
<p>I hope I or my wife never has to deal with what this good Bishop&#8217;s wife is experiencing right now and in the near future.  I hope we die together, at a ripe old age.  More than that, however, I hope that when either of us dies, the other is at peace &#8211; <strong>because she or I simply has become a peaceful person</strong>.</p>
<p>As I strive to be a peacemaker and, thereby, to be called a child of God, I understand that the first peace I must influence and create is within my own heart and soul &#8211; that I can&#8217;t spread peace externally unless I am at peace internally.  For those who now are NOT at peace, I hope they can look for peace even before understanding.  That might seem counter-intuitive at first, but I believe peace can bring understanding &#8211; and that understanding, in and of itself, rarely brings peace &#8211; largely because the quest for understanding never ends.  Peace, on the other hand, can last and endure even during circumstances that cannot be understood &#8211; like the unexpected death of a good Bishop.</p>

<ul>
<li>Every family member or friend&#8217;s struggle would be a sign of your guilt for having failed them OR a sign that you should cut them off so you will not be tainted by association.</li>
<li>Every new person you met would be an opportunity for a convert rather than a friend (and if not a convert, not a friend).</li>
<li>You would carefully choose your words and deeds to demonstrate to others around you that you are living up to what you think they expect.</li>
<li>If you ever did disagree with someone, you&#8217;d have to make sure that somehow your disagreement put YOU on the side of the church and THEM on the other side.</li>
<li>If your spouse suddenly stopped attending church or became disaffected, you would stop loving them because they jeopardized your &#8220;perfect&#8221; image or your expectations for the Celestial Kingdom.</li>
</ul>

<ul>
<li>The church does not equal Jesus, even if one believes Jesus is at the head of it.  The church is a human institution that should ideally inspire us and draw us closer to Him.</li>
<li>It&#8217;s pretty arrogant to put yourself (or your perceptions) in the role of Jesus and to assume that anyone who disagrees with you is rejecting you as the Savior was rejected.</li>
<li>Being righteous does not equal being right.  In fact, once you start getting too concerned about the latter, you can kiss the former goodbye.</li>
<li>The greatest two commandments are to love God and our fellow man as ourselves.  If we can&#8217;t even unconditionally love those closest to us (family and friends), how can we expect to love our enemies (also required)?</li>
<li>&#8220;Perfect love casteth out fear.&#8221;  We can&#8217;t love people if we are consumed by fear of rejection (from either man or God).</li>
</ul>
<p>Is this a particular problem in the church?  Do people really live their lives like this?  Do you know anyone like this?  Are you like this sometimes?  How do you take off the mask and &#8220;let your light so shine&#8221;?  Discuss.</p>

<p>Have I missed any major angle above?  It occurs to me that these topics might get stale if covered for 3 hours every week.  Also, if speakers only focused on 1 or 2 of the 5, it would get very repetitive.  I also notice that as I look over the list, I don&#8217;t find them equally appealing.  Personally, I would prefer them in this order:  2, 4, 3, 5, 1.  What order would you prefer?  I think the order in which they are usually focused at church is the order I listed them above:  1, 2, 3, 4, 5.  Do you agree?</p>
<p>Do you feel that Church should be more Christ-centered or that it is sufficiently Christ-centered?  Which of the above focuses would be of the most interest to you?  Are there some ways of focusing on Christ that you don&#8217;t find appealing?  How do you think our focus (especially by topic) compares to other Christian churches?  Discuss.</p>

		<title>Peace, Be Still: And There Was a Great Calm (Mark 4:36-39)</title>

<p>As I thought about this passage, two things jumped out at me:</p>
<p>1) Jesus&#8217; state prior to calming the storm;<br />
2) The actual words used to describe the command and its effect.<span id="more-3745"></span></p>
<p>Prior to <a href="http://thingsofmysoul.blogspot.com/2008/07/blessed-are-peacemakers.html">my New Year&#8217;s resolution for last July</a>, I had never considered something quite simple about this account. When the storm first raged, and the disciples were fearful of their safety and their very lives, <strong>Jesus was asleep.</strong> That is worth considering more deeply:</p>
<p>Jesus was asleep &#8211; personally at peace &#8211; as the storm raged around him and terrified those who were with him. I will return to that point at the end of this post.</p>
<p>&#8220;Peace, be still.&#8221;</p>
<p>Jesus&#8217; &#8220;command&#8221;, when read strictly in isolation from the actual context, doesn&#8217;t sound like much of a &#8220;command&#8221;.  Like, &#8220;<a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/gen/1/3#3">Let there be light</a>,&#8221; it is a rather benign sounding statement. However, in the Japanese translation of Genesis 1:3, the feeling is very different. &#8220;Hikari ga are&#8221; (pronounced &#8220;heekahree gah ahre&#8221;) literally translates as the strictest of commands &#8211; roughly equivalent in English to &#8220;There <span style="font-weight: bold;">WILL</span> be light (because I <span style="font-weight: bold;">WILL</span> be obeyed).&#8221;  With this perspective, I can picture Jesus standing in the boat saying either of the following:</p>
<p>1) In a soft, gentle, soothing voice &#8211; &#8220;Peace, be still.&#8221;<br />
2) In a stern, commanding, authoritative voice, perhaps with outstretched hand &#8211; &#8220;There <span style="font-weight: bold;">WILL</span> be peace. <strong> <span style="font-weight: bold;">BE STILL</span>!</strong>&#8221;</p>
<p>I lean toward the second picture (the command), primarily due to the statement in verse 39 that Jesus &#8220;rebuked&#8221; the wind. &#8220;Rebuke&#8221; means &#8220;sharp, stern disapproval; reproof; reprimand.&#8221; Either way, the description of the result is enlightening.</p>
<p>Verse 39 says, &#8220;the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.&#8221; In this statement, there is a distinction made between two separate effects:</p>
<p>1) The wind ceased;<br />
2) There was a great calm.</p>
<p>As I read this passage, I conclude that there are two aspects of becoming a peacemaker in its fullest sense.</p>
<p>First, a peacemaker takes an active role in stopping contention or any manifestation of &#8220;storms&#8221; that threaten safety &#8211; or, in a very real sense, others&#8217; spiritual lives. Remember, this storm wasn&#8217;t just a matter of danger in the distance; it was causing the water to fill the boat. In other words, the threat &#8211; the danger &#8211; was very real and imminent. This is a protective action &#8211; rebuking the winds that blow &#8211; making those winds cease, even if it takes &#8220;sharp, stern disapproval; reproof; reprimand.&#8221; It is critical that a peacemaker understands meekness and mercy, as this understanding is vital to recognizing when rebuke truly is necessary &#8211; rather than simply &#8220;natural&#8221; or convenient or easy. It also is critical that she show &#8220;an increase of love . . ., lest he esteem thee to be his enemy.&#8221; (<a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/dc/121/43#43">D&amp;C 121:43</a>)  She creates by her actions &#8220;stillness&#8221; &#8211; a condition where it is possible to &#8220;know that I am God&#8221;.  (<a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/ps/46/10#10">Psalms 46:10</a>)</p>
<p>Second, a peacemaker ensures that this &#8220;stillness&#8221; is experienced &#8211; is felt &#8211; as a &#8220;great calm&#8221;. When true peace has been created, it is accompanied by a calmness that can be distinguished from the simple quietude that we generally associate with stillness. Jesus&#8217; rebuke of the storm did more than just establish stillness as silence; it left the disciples feeling calm.</p>
<p>Silence is the lack of noise; it is merely a passive condition defined as a void. Silence is understood by what it is not &#8211; sound. Calmness, on the other hand, is defined by what it is &#8211; an actual feeling &#8211; an emotion &#8211; something that fills one&#8217;s soul rather than simply the absence of something else. Again, calmness is something in and of itself &#8211; an empowering gift that allows someone to remain unaffected by the storm even as it rages and even more so when it ceases. This allows one to feel &#8220;calm&#8221; even amid turmoil, and it provides &#8220;great calm&#8221; when turmoil stops.</p>
<p>I return now to Jesus sleeping as the storm raged around him &#8211; at peace and calm as others panicked. He possessed an internal peace, but it was his rebuking of the wind (and the subsequent removal of others&#8217; fright and replacement with stillness and calm that extended his own peace to them) that made Him (in this case) a peace<strong>MAKER</strong> &#8211; not just a peaceful person.</p>
<p>The Bloggernacle (the internet in general) is not a place that naturally is condusive to peace and great calm.  We feel and believe many things passionately, and we share them passionately &#8211; and I wouldn&#8217;t change that for the world.  It is a major reason why I love Mormon Matters.  However, peace and calm sometimes flee in the face of that passion.  When that happens, I believe it is important to &#8220;awaken&#8221; to the gathering storm and say (perhaps gently, perhaps forcefully):</p>
<p>&#8220;Peace, be still.&#8221;</p>
