Upon What Rock?

Upon What Rock?

There’s a difference in interpretation between how LDS and non-LDS view the statement by Jesus to Peter when he says “Thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church.”  While all might agree that there is a play on words between the name “Peter” and “rock,” Catholics consider this scripture as the origin of Papal authority, whereas LDS readers would say that Jesus was referring to “revelation” as the rock upon which He would build His church.  So, just what rock was Jesus talking about?

Modern-Day Swearing: Will Our Bastardized Words Damn Us to Hell?

February 3, 2009
By

I believe we need to take responsibility for understanding and choosing what we say and do – not allowing others to make those decisions for us.  With that in mind, I am addressing the “what”, “why” and “so what” of “swearing and cursing”. The best Biblical statements regarding swearing and cursing include the following: “Thou shalt fear the Lord thy God, and serve him, and shalt swear by his name.” (Deut. 6:13) “But I say unto you, Swear not at all;” (Matthew 5:34) “And he that curseth his father, or his mother, shall surely be put to death.” (Exodus...

The Symbolic Image of Christ

The Symbolic Image of Christ

Much has been said in church magazines and the Bloggernacle about the image of Joseph Smith. Do we know what Joseph Smith really looked like? Are our statues and paintings truly representative of him? This is not the point of my post here, though. I recently had a conversation with my fiancee about Rastafarianism, mentioning that Rastas believe that Jesus Christ was black. I admitted that, though I personally don’t see much evidence for that, I did concede that Jesus probably looked very different than what most Mormons envision.

Are We Cross at the Cross?

January 30, 2009
By

As I was getting ready for church one Sunday, I went to put on a necklace. I looked at the cross that a non-LDS family member gave me a few years ago. She knows I’m a Christian and I’m sure she thought it would be a nice gesture (which it absolutely was!), but I opted for the heart necklace instead. I’ve worn my cross out in public many times and I personally have no problem with it. But I’ve yet to wear it to church.  This got me thinking about something I’ve never been quite sure about. How do...

Why Is It So Hard for Many Ex-Mormons to Join Another (Traditional) Christian Denomination?

January 28, 2009
By

I had a job a long time ago as the Training Manager at a company that was going through the ISO 9000 certification process.  For those who are unfamiliar with that process, it is an auditing system that focuses on the internal working of a company – looking not at whether a company is involved in “best practices” but rather whether a company is articulating and following clearly defined practices and procedures.  I summed it up at the time as being able to do three things: 1) Say what you do. 2) Do what you say. 3) Prove it.

Horus Bible Parallels

Recently I saw Religulous here and he touched on Horus here and a few of the parallels between the story of Horus and Jesus. Many Mormons when they start delving and  unravelling events in our history also delve into what they can find out about (possible origins)

The Age of (Un)Accountability

January 17, 2009
By

NOTE: This is the first post for a new Guest Author – The Faithful Dissident. We look forward to many more to come. Growing up with younger siblings, I always had a hard time believing that Satan couldn’t possess kids under the age of eight.  And that goes for myself too, since if what my parents have said is true, I was a bit of a devil child.  But, in all seriousness, I have some questions that make it hard for me to not see conflicts between the doctrine of the Age of Accountability and other Church doctrine.

Conservative Evangelicals & Liberal Mormons: Are They Really Similar In Ways?

January 14, 2009
By

The following quotes are excerpted from an article written in 1989 and quoted by the Fundamental Evangelists Association.  (The entire article is an interesting look into the factions within evangelism.)  I was struck by the concerns expressed within a couple of the statements and simply want to explore them here as they relate to Mormonism.  (The higlighted parts are my emphasis.)  “Calling the whole church to take the whole gospel to the whole world.” This was the ecumenical theme of the Second International Congress on World Evangelization, held July 11-20, 1989 in Manila, The Philippines. Commonly referred to as the...

Stop Baptizing Our Dead!

Stop Baptizing Our Dead!

The LDS doctrine of Baptism for the Dead is unique within Christianity. The explanation for the doctrine and additional references on the LDS Church website can be found here. There is also a fairly lengthy explanation on Wikipedia here. It is a controversial doctrine and many groups have protested this vicarious work for the dead, including Jews, Catholics and others. I find a certain ironies in their protestations.

Abstinence= Don’t think the colour red! Don’t think the colour red!

“The National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health” (Add Health), Found that conservative and evangelical Christian teenagers are more sexually active than mainline Protestants, Jews, and even Mormons. On average, white evangelical Protestants begin having sex shortly after turning sixteen, which is sooner than most other groups.

Who’s Winning the War on Christmas?

Peter Brimelow, a British journalist, is credited with coining the term “War on Christmas” in 1999 to describe the politically correct movement in English-speaking countries to neutralize public references to Christmas out of deference to non-Christians.  This term has been popularized, especially by right-winger Bill O’Reilly and folks over 65 who like to forward outraged spam emails about how the world is going to hell in a handbasket.  So, who’s winning the War on Christmas?

Trying to Understand Creedal Trinitarianism – An Analogy

December 22, 2008
By

In my last post I, in great detail, demonstrated why I believe the Trinity doctrine itself is not a contradiction but that creedal Christians have been trained to use it in a contradictory way. I did it using predict logic, tons of examples, and examples from real life conversations with creedal Christians. So that means no one will read it. It would seem that being precise with your language makes it difficult to read and comprehend. (A fact all programmers know.) Sometimes it’s easier to just use an example, which is less precise but more understandable. So here is an...

Is the Trinity Doctrine a Contradiction?

December 20, 2008
By

Several times in discussions on Mormon Matters I’ve made the comment that the Trinity doctrine is a contraction. Actually, technically I was not correct when I said that. I wish to explain my self further, partially backtracking on, or at least nuancing, those comments. The Trinity doctrine itself doesn’t have to be a contradiction – indeed, I grow more convinced all the time that the Trinity doctrine, at it’s root, is what I believe. What I should have said is that creedal Christians honestly seem to me to be making a choice to interpret or use the Trinity doctrine in...
