			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Mormon Heretic&#8217;s <a href="http://mormonmatters.org/2010/06/29/a-horrific-tale-of-forgiveness/"> post on forgiveness</a> from a few weeks ago touched me deeply, but I needed time to get my thoughts together about it before I could respond.</p>
<p>I once had the neighbor from hell. I use the expression with theological intent.</p>
<p>Smart and relentlessly treacherous, he was somewhere on the spectrum from malignant narcissist to full-fledged sociopath, and I had no desire to observe closely enough to find out where. I do not know what horror had befallen him &#8212; if anything more significant than a stray cosmic ray hitting the genome at the wrong time &#8212; but he seemed to be without sincere empathy toward anyone. Worse, he seemed to have grown to love cruelty as the only thing giving meaning to his life. He was Jack Nicholson as the Joker: &#8220;So many people to hurt, so little time!&#8221; If he was not planning or executing some plot against one person, it was because he was busy with a more hated target.</p>
<p><span id="more-12700"></span></p>
<p>Our family&#8217;s first hostile contact with this guy arose innocently enough. His daughter had a cat. When his daughter was living with her mother &#8212; he was, of course, in the middle of a messy divorce &#8212; he left it outside in the cold and wet and the hot and dry. My wife, not wanting the cat to suffer, began putting out a bowl of water on our porch in the heat, and a little food and a towel for the cat to shelter under in the cold. Polite suggestions to him that leaving the cat outside wasn&#8217;t a good idea led to several conflicted stories about why it was all right, but a clear acknowledgement that the cat was, indeed, his responsibility.</p>
<p>And then, after this had gone on for several months, a middle-aged oriental woman, not speaking English very well, appeared at our door one evening. She asked us if the cat then lurking behind our front bushes belonged to our neighbor, and my wife innocently and honestly answered yes.</p>
<p>And with that simple act, we moved unexpectedly from peace to a full-scale personal war in which our spiritual and emotional health and livelihood was directly threatened.</p>
<p>The woman had purchased the property from a military doctor and his wife when they transferred out of state to a new assignment. She had invested  her savings to make the buy, and then rented the property to our neighbor through an agency. Home prices in our county had been exploding, and she hoped to make a good profit from her investment. Instead, she found a nightmare.</p>
<p>In the year he&#8217;d been there, he&#8217;d managed to find some loophole each month to avoid paying a cent of rent. County codes here are built more to protect immigrant tenants from slumlords; they really were not designed with what an immoral tenant could do to an immigrant landlord in mind. Heating and cooling systems or plumbing would continually &#8220;break&#8221; &#8212; there were sometimes different heating companies called to the home for repairs on the same day, especially when the first arrivals found the systems to be working properly. He would call for repairs to be made, then deny access to the repairmen. On one occasion, I saw him demand reseeding of grass in his front yard for drainage, and then slip out to the yard that weekend and destroy the new turf.  On another, I saw him inspect a damaged fence, and then, rather than report it, hide the fact from the landlady until another month&#8217;s rent was due.</p>
<p>Now, burning through her savings for mortgage payments and repairs  with no end in sight, being harassed by the man by telephone and intimidated by him to the point she was afraid to come to the home without an escort, she saw a possible way to break the lease: it had a no-pet provision. And so she asked about the cat. We answered honestly &#8212; and then the neighbor came after us.</p>
<p>My wife had been supporting us by teaching individual piano students from our home for years, and had been the primary breadwinner since my heart attack. He filed complaints that what we were doing instead was a group studio in violation of zoning, and demanded we be shut down. He stole trash during the night and attempted to frame me for illegal dumping of medical waste. He attempted to intimidate parents from bringing children for lessons by rushing to the edge of our property and, without any explanation, taking pictures of the children, and then the license plates of their cars like they were drug dealers. Every night there was drilling into the walls between our homes  or hammering on them, and we never knew if or how he was trying to sabotage our systems. We spent thousands in legal fees just to protect ourselves.</p>
<p>As I began to ask myself who was this guy, and why was he doing this, I found in public legal records that he had a long record of defiance to authority, with a couple of dozen violations, including jail time, for various disputes with neighbors seemingly everywhere he&#8217;d lived since adulthood. Simultaneously with his dispute with us and the landlady, he was on trial for phone harassment of his wife, and in a domestic violence dispute with a girlfriend he&#8217;d been with less than a month. He sought out potential violations by other witnesses in the neighborhood (such as expired license plates), and threatened to expose them if they testified. He went after the Home Owners Association President, an African-American, by making racial slurs in the presence of her daughter. He went after the county enforcement officials and tried to get their bosses to fire them; he went after the lawyers for conflicts of interest; he tried to get judges removed from his trials. You get the point.</p>
<p>The pressure on us grew more dispiriting, or perhaps I should say <em>dark-spiriting</em>, as months went by with no resolution. And we found ourselves increasingly turning to prayer for deliverance, as we felt imprisoned in our own home, never knowing what we would have to defend against tomorrow. And, as necessary, we were indeed delivered. In a couple of cases, traps laid for us were thwarted by unlikely coincidences. But the darkness, though warded off, was <em>always</em> present.</p>
<p>And then, in one of those deep prayer experiences, I heard in my mind my <em>enemy&#8217;s</em> soul cry out in an agony to God to be delivered from the darkness that enveloped <em>him</em>. I do not believe his physical form recognized what his own spirit was doing; he seemed to love the darkness and would cling to his cellphone (from which he harassed victims) like it was a totem of power he could not be without for even a moment. But I heard the Holy Spirit answer: &#8220;He is <strong>forbidden</strong> to remain as he is.&#8221; And the word &#8220;forbidden&#8221; carried all of the undeniable weight of a requirement to choose salvation or doom.</p>
<p>A few days later, entirely unbidden, while I was still trying to understand in my own mind the previous experience,  I heard his soul cry out again that he would be lost. And equally unbidden, my own prayers suddenly changed.</p>
<p>Instead of praying that God would get this guy off my family&#8217;s back, I found myself praying that God would get that darkness off this guy&#8217;s back. Because I saw that there was truly a predator, and my neighbor was the unsuspecting prey. And I was weeping for him, and praying as hard and as intensely as I have ever prayed for anything in my life.</p>
<p>It was the first time in my life that I truly<em> loved</em> my enemy.  Not decided that someone wasn&#8217;t really my enemy (six months after he finally left the neighborhood, he came back to see if sabotage he&#8217;d previously prepared for the air conditioning unit had, in fact,  caused the system to fail, leaving new renters he&#8217;d never even met sweltering in a summer heat wave for two days). Not just trying to treat my enemy with justice. Not simply restraining my self-defense. For once, I knew what it meant to love an enemy, even knowing he would remain my enemy, and that the existing situation was <strong>forbidden</strong> to continue.</p>
<p>But why was it only &#8220;for once&#8221;? What makes it so hard for me &#8212; for us &#8212; to stay in the loving attitude that the fate of the soul of my enemy (let alone the soul of a stranger or a friend) is of eternal significance even if I must oppose that enemy with all my might?</p>
<p>That seems to be something to spend some time contemplating as we remember this weekend a day of great violence.</p>

<li>I have two kids. The first time around was really scary. I love it now.</li>
<li>I turned down an offer to move back near family for the next round of grad school, for a slightly better (but who knows?) offer to move further away.</li>
<li>I started working with foster kids precisely because I had no desire to work with adolescents, and generally found them to be intimidating. Now I work with juvenile offenders who punch people and deal drugs and throw rocks at houses. It&#8217;s still a little scary, but I&#8217;m learning.</li>
</ul>
<p>In my life, I generally follow this principle &#8211; If something I know would be good for me also happens to scare me, I seek it out, I try to experience it. I owe much of my growth to that Zone Leader, on that morning in Japan, from a simple sentence, spoken with authority and love: &#8220;Do things that scare you.&#8221;</p>

It is taking hard work to believe the things that I have survived. I have been accused of things I did not do in a court that seemed sympathetic to the other side. I have learned how to live with a measure of real and daily fear. I have witnessed almost every purpose of my life crumble in my hands. I have not, by any means, lived through the worst that life has to offer, but I have lived through my lot only to be confronted by those who cannot understand and so do not believe me. My faith has also been left exposed to the elements, raw and aching. I have difficulty knowing what to believe or what to do. [...]]]></description>

<p>When Jesus was suffering on the cross at Calvary, those who put Him there surrounded Him to mock Him. They jeered, “If [thou art] the King of Israel . . . come down from the cross, and we will believe . . . .” (Matt 27:42)</p>
<p>I have emerged from the other end of a marriage that stripped me of my ability to trust myself. It is taking hard work to believe the things that I have survived. I have been accused of things I did not do in a court that seemed sympathetic to the other side. I have learned how to live with a measure of real and daily fear. I have witnessed almost every purpose of my life crumble in my hands. I have not, by any means, lived through the worst that life has to offer, but I have lived through my lot only to be confronted by those who cannot understand and so do not believe me.<span id="more-11455"></span><!--more--></p>
<p>My faith has also been left exposed to the elements, raw and aching. I have difficulty knowing what to believe or what to do. I have been confronted time after time with the choice to take the emotionally easy road, to accept what life is telling me, or to take a tiny, twisting and seemingly treacherous path without knowing for certain where I am going or if I can get there. So I think I understand a little better than I did those people who ask for proof.</p>
<p>I have noticed that sometimes those in scripture who ask for proof are given exactly what they ask for, such as <a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/judg/4"></a>Barak with Deborah, the <a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/hel/9/2#2">people of Zarahemla</a>, and the <a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/alma/14/24#24">those of Ammonihah</a>, while <a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/john/6/30#30">others</a> are <a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/3_ne/26/9-10#9">left</a> to work out their uncertainty. Often, <a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/1_ne/7/10#10">those</a> <a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/3_ne/1/22#22">who</a> are given the sign they are seeking find that it doesn’t really change their opinions, in the end.</p>
<p>Perhaps the story of this type that I resonate best with is the tale of the <a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/mark/9/24#24">man</a> with the palsied son. When told that his son could be healed if he believed, he cried to Jesus, saying, “Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief!”</p>
<p>Time upon time as I have found myself weeping bitterness into my abused pillow, I have cried these exact words in my heart, yearning to feel the fruits of my faith. I ache when I see so many people here on the Internet crying out because they have found themselves at a point in their lives when they just stop believing in the gospel as presented by the LDS Church. I ache because I have looked into that abyss myself, and felt its depths.</p>
<p>The classic analogy to illustrate how that feels is the scene from <em>Indiana Jones</em> when his father lays dying behind him and he is faced with a choice of faith: to walk into a seemingly bottomless chasm, or to turn around and let his father die. He makes that choice, and luckily it works for him. One thing that is poignant about that story is that he almost fully expected to die when he took that step, but he took it anyways because the alternative was worse.</p>
<p>To me, this is raw, living faith. Right now, I <em>am</em> standing at the other end of a failed marriage, and almost every one of the things I have dedicated my life to lie crumbled at my feet. But I don’t keep going to Church and praying with my Father in Heaven because I know that things will work out for me or because I feel as though who I am now has anything to do with the Church and my ward. I pray to my Father and continue going to Church because the alternative—to give up on my dreams and turn my back on what I know (and I do mean <em>know</em>)—is far, far worse.</p>
<p>I don’t know what my future will hold. I don’t know what my Father has in mind for me. But I know Him, and I choose, with eyes open and fear in my heart, to trust Him. I will not wait to believe.</p>

		<title>A Control Freak&#8217;s Lament</title>

I like to be in control of machines, robots, airplanes, my life, my spirituality, my kids, my wife, etc. Some of this is healthy! Some if it is not. Yet, despite my proclivity to control I occassionally find myself in situations where I am not in control of my emotions, my spirituality, etc. For the bulk of my not-so-long life I have been in a perpetual cycle of shame with varying frequency and intensity. My worldview was shaped by my Mormon upbringing and I worked diligently to fit the mold completely. I was a good kid. No, I was a GREAT kid! Seriously, I did well in school, got my Eagle Scout, served a successful mission, never committed any egregious sins, read my scriptures nightly all through my teenage years, never touched any coffee, tea, tobacco, or alcohol, and pretty much put a checkmark in every box in the proverbial Mormon checklist! <p>Nevertheless, this was part of the cycle.  As long as I was perfect I never had any problems.  I merrily went on my way convinced my worldview was a correct interpretation of my existence, assured that my lifestyle choice would reap rewards.  I will not deny that this leaked over into a self-righteous attitude which, on more than one occassion, led to my snarkiness toward those whom I perceived were not living these standards.  In fact, though I&#8217;ve not been told this, I hold this attitude responsible for destroying more than one relationship in my life.</p>
<p>But alas, I am not perfect.  I make mistakes, and when I do, I beat myself up badly over them.  Keep in mind I&#8217;m not talking about major things here like murder, or chastity sins, or something, I&#8217;m talking about little things &#8211; things that really should be in the noise.  It&#8217;s these times when the shame monster rears its ugly head and takes a bite out of my otherwise healthy self-esteem.  This isn&#8217;t just some sort of twinge of guilt I feel, but shame, pure, and awful!  And it doesn&#8217;t go away until I beat myself up emotionally to a sufficient level.  Obviously the shame is further aggravated by the sure knowledge that once again I have failed to live up the expectations my worldview dictates.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s during these times the control freak in me is like a belligerent 5-year old, wanting to get his way, using all sorts of behavioral tricks, tantrums, pouting, all to try and restore order, control, and most importantly that self-confidence that has been shredded!  During these times the result might be anger, or a bout with depression.  Perhaps the object of frustration becomes those I love.  In any case, until the control freak is able to restore self-esteem, things will be a bit rough.</p>
<p>Needless to say, such a paradigm is not healthy for me in the least!</p>
<p>And yet, at least one solution is as easy as allowing the control freak to dictate the terms on which I accept my involvement in my tribe.  Through my faith crisis I learned this lesson very poignantly.  I was in charge of my spirituality &#8211; not the church, not my bishop, not my teachers.  And just as I could not blame them for my unhealthy worldview, I could also not allow them unchecked access to it either.  It is me that decides what I should do and why I should do it.  I get to decide the terms on which I participate in my culture.  It&#8217;s true that I cannot choose the consequences, but my power of choice also allows me the possibility to insulate myself from them in my tribal context.</p>
<p>This empowerment was very enlightening to me during a dark period of my life in which I nearly left the church.  I was able to resolve and separate concerns with leaders, history, the organization itself, etc.  I could stay a member of my tribe but it would be on my terms, and it would be for my own benefit.</p>
<p>But it is hard to supplant a worldview.  Unfortunately I find myself occassionally slipping into the old cycle.  Sometimes in an ungaurded moment, the control freak forgets the conditions of my participation and leaves me vulnerable, allowing unchecked access to my healthier, but still budding worldview.  The shame soon sets in as I again realize I do not measure up to the completely impossible standard my former worldview erected.</p>
<p>It is a perpetual struggle, one that is naturally built into my personality, but is aggravated, and made to be unhealthy, by a strict culture with high standards.  Pulling myself out of the cycle is an exercise in meditation, prayer, challenging false beliefs, understanding, and above all, modifying my expectations!</p>

<blockquote><p>The origin and destiny of the [so-called] &#8220;Red Man&#8221; were among the chief topics for speculation and discussion on the early nineteenth century American frontier. The presence of many Indian burial mounds in the Great Lakes region was a constant source of curiosity for the settlers in that region. In 1823 Ethan Smith, a Vermont pastor, published a book entitled View of the Hebrews: or the Ten Tribes of Israel in America.</p>
<p>Those who received the Book of Mormon from the hands of eager missionaries were urged not only to assent to the narrative as a historical account of the Indians&#8217; ancestory, but also to accept the book as evidence that God had broken the silence of centuries to restore his church to the earth by means of a young prophet. Many of the early Latter Day Saint believers took an all-or-nothing approach.  If the Book of Mormon was true, the religion expounded by its author and proprietor was true also. If the book should ever prove to be false, all validity for the restoration movement would necessarily have to be disclaimed.</p>
<p>The book immediately attained a canonical status in the minds of the Latter Day Saints that made literal acceptance of it as the revelation of God to the ancient Americans a matter of faith. As far as church members were concerned, the book was impervious to any kind of critical investigation and judgment.</p>
<p>As modern historical and textual scholarship in the realm of biblical studies became increasing appreciated and influential at the grassroots level in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and thus known to some extent to Latter Day Saints, a defensive reaction set in among some church members, resulting in some stiff resistance to allowing the tools of this scholarship to be applied to the church&#8217;s understandings of the Book of Mormon. Thus Book of Mormon studies in the past have been characterized by polemics, apologetics, and amateur archaeological surveys whenever the concern has moved beyond merely exploring the intricate details of the very complex narrative of migrations, wars, and religious revivals among the Book of Mormon peoples.</p>
<p>Because the temper of our times is such that no movement nor institution nor book can forever remain impervious to the searchlight of scholarly inspection, out times demand that all the rudiments of religious faith be subjected to the scrutiny of reason and empirical research.</p>
<p>As the Book of Mormon is examined without any intention solely to amass data to support preconceived notions about it, certain problems concerning traditional understanding of the books stand out. These problems include:</p>
<p>1<strong>. The story of its coming forth</strong>. The actual events culminating in the publication of the book are, as of now, quite irrecoverable in that it is impossible to distill a unified account from all the primary and secondary reports.</p>
<p>2. <strong>Identifying the book&#8217;s narrative with a particular time and space</strong>. Extravagant claims about ancient American archaeology supporting the Book of Mormon have been made. Toltec, Mayan and even Aztec ruins, all of a comparatively late period, have been unfortunately identified with Book of Mormon peoples.</p>
<p>3, <strong>The book&#8217;s propensity for reflecting in detail the religious concerns of the American frontier</strong>. Alexander Campbell in 1831 pointed out that every major theological question of the frontier was covered in the Book of Mormon, including infant baptism, ordination and ministerial authority, the trinity, regeneration, the fall of man, the atonement, transubstantiation, fasting, penance, church government, religious experience, the general resurrection, eternal punishment, and even the burning question of Freemasonry, republican government and the rights of man.</p>
<p>4<strong>. The Christological perspective of the book</strong>. To some students of theology, it would appear that there is a marked incongruity between the Christ Event of the New Testament and the Christ Event of the Book of Mormon.</p>
<p>5. <strong>The book&#8217;s ethical implications, when viewed as universally binding upon all men</strong>. Some Latter Day Saints, in talking of the Book of Mormon as the &#8220;fullness of the gospel&#8221; (D. &amp; C. 17:2), believe that the book reveals the will of God more perfectly than any other resource we possess. Moreover they would assert that the transmission process involved in preserving and bringing forth the book would bypass many of the scribal errors to which the Bible was admittedly vulnerable.</p>
<p>6. <strong>The use of biblical scripture and ideas as sources</strong>. Several sizeable sections of the King James Version of the Bible are found in the Book of Mormon, including twenty-one chapters of Isaiah, the Sermon on the Mount, the Ten Commandments, Malachi 3 and 4, I Corinthians 12:1-11 and Acts 3:22-26. In addition to such full-fledged quotations, the Book of Mormon is replete with short biblical expressions. John Hyde counted 298 biblical snatches from the New Testament alone in the first 428 pages of the first edition of the Book of Mormon.</p>
<p>8<strong>. The matter of Book of Mormon anachronisms</strong>. Those who approach the Book of Mormon with the view of proving it to be essentially what it seems to claim to be–a record of the history of ancient Americans who lived between 2200 BC and AD 400–immediately find themselves having to deal with the problem of anachronisms.</p>
<p>9. <strong>The changes in the Book of Mormon</strong>. While the book itself confesses the possibility of errors, many claims concerning the verbal accuracy of the book have long been made by Book of Mormon adherents. Joseph Smith himself at one time state that &#8220;the Book of Mormon was the most correct of any book on earth.&#8221; Modern Microfilm Company of Salt Lake City has recently published a work documenting 3,913 changes in the Book of Mormon since its first printing.</p>
<p><strong>Conclusions.</strong> None of the above problems areas &#8220;disprove&#8221; the Book of Mormon. They do, however, raise some questions about our traditional understandings concerning the book. Perhaps for some church members answers to the questions raised in this article would seem to be readily available. For others, however, quick and easy answers will not solve the dilemma. Perhaps the time has come in the church to recognize that some members want to openly espouse a non-literal view of the Book of Mormon, treating it as a non-historical treatise in much the same manner as modern critics view the books of Jonah, Ruth, Job, and Daniel in the Old Testament. Freed from some of the traditional hang-ups involved with having to accept unquestioningly the historicity of the Book of Mormon, these members could then read the book as a product of the Restoration movement in the nineteenth century, perhaps thus &#8220;enjoying&#8221; this fascinating piece of literature for the very first time.</p></blockquote>

<p><em>Now, a year later, I still think that Elder Bednar was wrong.  Facebook has and will permanently improve every aspect of our social lives.  I wrote the following paper to illustrate why.</em></p>
<p>In the late hours of October 23, 2003, slowly getting drunk after being rejected by a girl, a Harvard undergraduate and computer programmer named Mark Zuckerberg was hit by a sudden cruel bout of inspiration. He was looking through a photographic directory (called a “facebook”) of his dormitory, and noted on his blog that some of the photos were so “horrendous,” that he was tempted “to put some of these faces next to pictures of farm animals and have people vote on which is more attractive.&#8221; Hours later, he had successfully created a website, abandoning the farm animals idea, but instead comparing Harvard students with each other using hacked photographs and information. Just a few hours later, and after 22,000 page views, Harvard officials had traced the source of the website and shut it down, citing privacy concerns. Now, with more than 1000 employees and over 400 million active users, according to Facebook Factsheet, Facebook.com carries underneath its stark blue banner a markedly different statement of purpose: “Facebook helps you connect and share with the people in your life.&#8221;<span id="more-10125"></span></p>
<p>Many have voiced concerns over the use of online social networking tools, such as Elder Bednar of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.  He has called online presences &#8220;digital distractions, diversions, and detours&#8221; that could lead to difficulties in marriage, or a decrease in eternal, meaningful friendships.  I can&#8217;t help but think that anyone who has a problem with Facebook merely doesn&#8217;t know enough about it.</p>
<p>If Facebook were a country, it would be the third-largest by population, just under China and India, and Facebook is now offered in 70 languages. Around 200 million users will log on to Facebook in any given day, and of these, 35 million will update their statuses. More than 3 billion photos are uploaded to Facebook each month. By October 2007, Time magazine’s Bill Tancer reported that, among 18- to 24-year-olds, social networking was the most-accessed type of web site on the Internet, outranking email, search engines, and pornography. In fact, Tancer quips that, statistically, it seems that when online social networking use goes up, pornography use goes down. What could appeal to young people more than the institutionalized voyeurism offered by online pornography? Perhaps Mark Zuckerberg said it best, quoted in Rolling Stone: “People are more voyeuristic than what I would have thought.&#8221;</p>
<p>But Facebook is not just a tool for prying into our friends’ lives. Facebook offers ingenious and simple solutions to many of the problems that plague our youth today. Previous to online social networking services, people had to make friends through personal, non-digital interaction. This was often painstaking, emotionally taxing, and slow. In order to learn another person’s interests and favorite activities, one had to have arduous conversations, feigning interest and engagement until the relevant information could be obtained. Human beings were needlessly confusing and multi-faceted. Facebook offers a better way. On each Facebook user’s page is an “Info” page. There, the user lists their personal characteristics, including interests and activities. Popular ones include “sports,” “music,” and “reading.” Mine says “songwriting.&#8221; I can easily go through my friends list and find other people interested in songwriting. Finding kindred spirits is easier and simpler thanks to Facebook.</p>
<p>Finding people with similar interests is one thing, discovering a person’s sexual orientation was even worse. It was socially demanding, and sometimes had to be done through roundabout means. This often led to embarrassment and offense. It required tip-toeing around the issue, carefully gauging a person’s affiliation through indirect personal queries. People went years without even declaring their orientation, deciding rather to personally cultivate and incubate those feelings for long periods of time. In the meantime, their casual acquaintances were left scratching their heads and wishing that the issue could be settled, so that judgment could no longer be withheld. However, on a person’s Facebook Info page, there is a section where he or she can publicly state whether they are interested in women, men, or both. Mine says “Interested in: women.&#8221;</p>
<p>Similarly, religious affiliation was once seen as a private dimension of one’s personality, and thus it was socially unacceptable to attain this information without grueling theological and philosophical discourse. It was not uncommon to have to hear a person’s entire life story and reasons for believing, in order to arrive at their religious affiliation. These traits were once very personal, carefully guarded, and sacred. Often, religion was left out of discussions altogether, for fear that one might be invited to a church service, Bar Mitzvah, or mosque, or that a controversial issue might be ignited in conversation. With Facebook, the process is streamlined, and the risk of controversial discourse is eliminated. Just check their Info box. Mine says “Latter-day Saint.&#8221;</p>
<p>Thus, important evaluations about a person’s character can be made with the click of your mouse. No longer must a person withhold appraisal until a clearer picture of their friend is obtained. It is now easier than ever to avoid the people you disagree with, and reduce complex social interactions.</p>
<p>In the past, people often found themselves longing for information about long-lost friends. Conversations about the past included references to characteristics and traits of their old friends, questions as to their whereabouts, and wishing that one could talk to them again, punctuated with sighing ruminations on how time flies. With online social networking, one can easily find out what these people had for breakfast this morning (and every morning). Each Facebook user has a white box on their front page that reads, “What’s on your mind?” One may type in their current whereabouts, opinion on the weather, or recent activities in what is called a “status update.” Below this box are the status updates of many of one’s closest friends. Some examples on my front page from my friends include, “meh,” “Babysitin [sic] my little nephews <img src='http://mormonmatters.org/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':)' class='wp-smiley' /> ,” “irritated…..,” and “oh life!!!” My own status says, “Does anyone want to come with my Arabic class to eat Mediterranean tonight?”</p>
<p>You might notice that these status updates seem simplistic and reductionist. This is by design. Many social interactions that existed previous to Facebook were seeped in over-stimulating meaning. Much time and effort were wasted by young people trying to understand and connect with each other. Young people’s hearts and minds caught fire as they participated in these exchanges. Should we really be over-stimulating our young people? Facebook offers a superior form of interaction through its “poke” function. Poke is a harmless, meaningless, effortless interaction, which undoubtedly leads to little misunderstanding, anger, friendship, or violence amongst our youth. On a person’s page, there is an option to poke them. Poke serves no function; Facebook merely informs that person that they have been poked. They then have the option to poke back.</p>
<p>Therefore, conflict is avoided through personal detachment. And when conflict cannot be avoided, it requires relatively little effort. Consider the following. In previous social interactions, confronting someone with a personal conflict or problem was a difficult task requiring great courage. One had to organize thoughts, plan a confrontation, and meet face-to-face with the object of their problem in order to work out a resolution. With online social networking, sending an angry email requires only the click of a button, and no face-to-face dialogue. People no longer need long nights of sleep to temper their emotions; one can now easily send a confrontational diatribe at 3 a.m., before rationality and a night’s sleep dull one’s emotions. And what if one receives an email like this from a friend? They are easily unfriended, or, in other words, removed from one’s friends list.</p>
<p>You see, before online social networking, “friend” was a poorly-defined term. Making friends required gaining the trust of others, sincerity and earnestness in one’s interactions, and perhaps several months of kindness before the title “friend” could be conferred upon another. Online social networking offers an instantaneous, digital, text-based solution to problem of friendship: redefinition and demarcation. Friends can be added through mutual interests, close proximity of location, or other friends. One could easily add or unfriend everyone from his or her high school. For instance, take Paul, the bassist from my last band, and friend-of-a-friend. Is Paul my friend, or isn’t he? It’s easy to tell: about four months ago he unfriended me.</p>
<p>This might have offended me, but I have 614 other friends. I can easily compare my prestige and popularity to other people on my friends list by contrasting the number of friends I have to the number of friends they have. Facebook’s statistics page says that the average person has 130 friends. Boy, am I glad I’m not that guy. However, embarrassingly, my wife has a significantly greater number than me: 943.</p>
<p>One might think that Facebook enhances friendships, relationships, and acquaintances. I would go one step further. Facebook replaces them with something even better: simple, streamlined friendship units. We are all now units on an interacting yet efficient grid. According to Facebook’s statistics page, the average unit spends almost an hour a day on Facebook. In this time, units read information on their friends’ walls, look through their activities, interests, and pictures, play games, join groups with others that have similar interests, and post links to other web pages. Units often check their Facebook pages several times during the day, and Facebook is now even offered on iPhones and other hand-held wireless devices, giving units the ability to check their Facebook pages everywhere they go, all day long, whether they are at church, class, or a friend’s wedding. There are more than 100 million mobile Facebook units, and according to Facebook Factsheet, they are statistically 50% more active on Facebook than non-mobile units. Perhaps one day, all people will carry Facebook with them, thus inextricably bonding us with our new virtual identities.</p>
<p>It should be plain now how Facebook transcended its cruel and dehumanizing beginnings in Mark Zuckerberg’s dorm room, and grew to be the most popular online social networking service.  Elder Bednar is simply blind to the New Truth: Facebook is defining us, shaping us, and reducing us. May our now archaic system of human-to-human non-electronic social interactions stay where it belongs: the Stone Age.</p>

<p><strong>A child is born in Bukavu</strong></p>
<p>A child is born in Bukavu, and sadness fills his mother’s heart&#8230; Bukavu is not the city of David. It is a town in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo. War has been ravaging the country for years. Ever since Kabila invaded the former Zaire with military support from the US. It is a war that no one speaks of – but it has cost the lives of millions of people and caused unimaginable suffering.</p>
<p><span id="more-8626"></span>The child’s mother is a young girl, a daughter of the area. This young girl is named Maria.  Maria was a girl like most any other girl in her town. She walked miles for water, she helped her mother with the cooking and she also tilled the land. She learnt how to read in primary school, but ever since the war her parents no longer could afford to pay her school fees. Maria was a believer in the Christian gospel – and went like all other young girls her age to church on Sunday.</p>
<p>Church was a mud hut with a roof made out of straw. There on Sundays, the kids would gather to learn about God. The preacher, an older man with glasses and graying hair, would always talk about God’s love for humanity – and that God once, long time ago, had come to the world as a male child to save humanity. In church, she had also learned some words of English. She knew that when you greeted someone, you had to say: “Good morning, class”. </p>
<p><strong>The morning breaks</strong></p>
<p>That was then. Prior to the attacks&#8230; One day, as the morning broke and shadows gathered, foreign soldiers drove into town. The houses were set on fire. The adults were gathered on the square and the older men were executed one by one. This is how Maria lost her father – and she and her mother witnessed it. The soldiers held their heads for them to watch. Maria was afraid. After having seen the murder of her father, they also separated her from her mother. She was chosen from among the young girls to follow a group of soldiers. One of them stripped her of her clothes and forced himself on her – he, subject to the commanders’ orders.</p>
<p>Now she held this young child in her arms. Her heart was filled with sadness, and she knew that her firstborn child would have given her joy under other circumstances. Some months after the soldiers left, Maria was chased away. The villagers who were left behind were ashamed of her and of the other girls who had become pregnant. These girls were a constant reminder of the day when the men in the village had been powerless – confronted with the threat and the fear of a gun. “Do not ever come back”, were the last words she heard as she was running for her life into the deep woods. </p>
<p>Maria sings to her little child a song she learned many years ago: “Lullaby, lullaby, my little one. Lullaby, my child so dear. Thy precious life has just begun. Thy mother holds thee near”. And yet, she knows the words do not ring true. True, all life is precious. But not one soul will ever value the life of this child. Born of a violent union, unwanted by his mother, into a world where people willingly march to the sound of guns. What future can she promise him? What life can this child possibly hope to have? Even though she loves him, he is a constant reminder of what happened to her, and like the villagers who once chased her away she cannot find peace when she looks into his eyes. </p>
<p><strong>Its ranks are filled with soldiers, united, bold and strong&#8230;</strong></p>
<p>Victory, victory&#8230; The guys were singing and shouting, drunken by their thirst for blood and proud of their conquest. Bukavu had been encircled, trapped, taken, raped and ravaged. The soldiers executed the orders of their commander and had in turn executed the elders of Bukavu – one by one. Herodes was the commander’s name. His boys feared him.</p>
<p>They were now men. They had proven it – to themselves and to him who had led them into victory. Joseph, one of the soldiers, the one who raped Maria, was nonetheless feeling some unease. In following orders, Joseph had forced himself upon this young girl. The others had told him that having sex with a virgin was going to save him from the disease that was making him weak, this pandemic they called AIDS. But more importantly, the others respected him now. He had become one of them: their partner in crime.</p>
<p>You are the man! We saw you, Joseph. You did it. You made her cry – you and your gun. You made her scream. The words were both making him feel proud and good about himself, but for one reason, unknown to him, they were also haunting him. Could he look at a woman again without thinking of the pain he had caused to this young girl – whose name he would never know? In order to survive – either you dominate or you are dominated, Herodes used to say. To rule, you have to systematically brake down the bonds that bind communities together. They need to fear you or fear will overtake you&#8230;</p>
<p><strong>I am trying to be like Jesus</strong></p>
<p>War does not bring out the best in us – it brings out the worst in us. True, some acts are acts of courage – but aren’t those heroic acts always associated with saving lives, and not with taking them? Fear begets fear. It is the opposite of love. Misery begets misery. It is the opposite of joy. Violence begets violence. It is the opposite of peace.</p>
<p>The nativity story told the world of a little baby boy, born to Mary, a girl chosen among other girls to be the mother of a Savior, rejected by men and yet, many are they who believe he is their safe ticket to heaven. The story from Bukavu is the story of a little baby boy, born to Maria, a girl chosen among other girls to be the victim of a soldier, so he could gain accept in the eyes of his comrades, so he could become a man, taking by force what he believed was a safe ticket to health.</p>
<p>Jesus taught us that he was not Herodes. “My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.&#8221;  Jesus was nonviolent. Not exactly what you would associate with being a King. He was God. He was love, both long-suffering and kind. That is why he came to earth as a man and not as a woman: not because God favors men, but because the concept of what it means to be a Man on earth is so contrary to what it means to being God in heaven – who Mormons believe is male. Be kind, as a child, he said to them, and loving as a hen gathers her chickens:</p>
<p>“O ye people of these great cities which have fallen, who are descendants of Jacob, yea, who are of the house of Israel, how oft have I gathered you as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and have nourished you. Yea, how oft would I have gathered you as a hen gathereth her chickens, and ye would not. O ye house of Israel, whom I have spared, how oft will I gather you as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, if ye will repent and return unto me with full purpose of heart”. </p>
<p><strong>Love one another</strong></p>
<p>It was necessary for Jesus to come to earth in the form and shape of a male – to represent God as his firstborn son, the first among all great men, a king of kings. “Little children, a new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another”.</p>
<p>The divine irony is the fact that Jesus exhibits throughout his life traits that we call feminine: peaceful, loving, kind, sharing, meek, forgiving, gentle, and caring. He helped the poor and he healed the sick. We crucified him, because he was a threat to men everywhere. He challenged the very idea of what it means to be a man: strong, violent, forceful, greedy, noisy, arrogant and proud. He challenged the way we think about achieving peace, not by dominating others before they dominate us, but by showing us a better way to freedom – paved with love and with sacrifice.</p>
<p>In short, this was the message Jesus gave to the modern House of Israel, to the modern sons of Jacob: “What manner of men ought ye to be? Verily I say unto you, even as I am.&#8221;  He showed all men an alternative masculinity &#8211; that of the nonviolent male who sides with the poor and the downtrodden. Come, follow me, the Savior said. </p>

This subject can be a tricky one. Gone are the days when a woman NEEDS a man for anything. We earn our own money, buy our own homes, travel alone, and live alone, but&#8230; we don&#8217;t  have the priesthood.  We need men for the priesthood.<br />
 When I was married, Mr. Soldier of Fortune was a non member, so the priesthood was somewhat of a non issue. We lived close enough to my parents that on the rare occasions I was sick or otherwise needed a blessing I could go to my dad. I was young, invincible, and though the absence of priesthood crept into my consciousness every once in a while, I didn&#8217;t think about it much. Then came my nightmare of a divorce and I was in so much emotional pain, I could hardly move. My family, seeing what I had been through, were sympathetic (they love me), but they were relieved to see my marriage over. I didn&#8217;t feel like I could go to my dad for a blessing of comfort when I knew that deep inside himself he was jumping for joy that Mr Soldier of Fortune was out of my life. I had been inactive for the majority of my marriage, but the year or so prior to our break up, I had started going back. No one really knew me. I usually just stayed for sacrament, but a few had introduced themselves and I was assigned home  teachers.</p>
<p>All that have been through an ugly divorce know that the pain can come in waves. Some you can stand against as the water rushes over you. Others are like a tsunami that sucks you in and spits you out in hostile and unfamiliar terrain. It was a tsunami day when I called my bishop and asked if he could come to my house and give me a blessing. I had caught him at a bad time; he was walking out the door to go somewhere with his wife. I apologized over and over and told him not to worry about it, but he came over anyway(it might have been the my unsuccessful attempts to hide the tears in my voice). I felt so embarrassed, but he gave me a lovely blessing that truly got me through a particularly dark period.</p>
<p>For several years after I divorced, I had no desire to date. the legal proceedings drug out(thanks to him)and I was determined not to get involved with anyone until the divorce was final. I had kind of settled into being single and I actually liked it. I worked hard, had fun with my friends, traveled, and pretty much did whatever I wanted to do. I was pretty active in a family ward that didnt treat me as some freak of nature because I wasn&#8217;t married. Life was good.Then I read an article in the Ensign about how people in the church are choosing not to marry and that it was considered a troublesome trend in our culture. It pointed out the commandments regarding marriage and encouraged single church members  not  disregard marriage as a worthy goal in  life. For the first time in 7 years I thought those words were written for me-a revelation of sorts. Most of the men I met didn&#8217;t seem to take their priesthood too seriously. Some had arrogantly lived beneath their privilege, unashamed of the covenants they broke, not sure if they even wanted to be in good standing with the church again. There were parts of me that held the priesthood in some disregard, sometimes even mild contempt. Heavenly Father had not blessed me with a faithful husband who honored his priesthood, so maybe this was just one of the many blessings that would not be mine in this life.</p>
<p>In more recent years, my heart has  softened on this subject. Going to the temple for the first time to receive my own endowment made me more aware of the eternal necessity of the priesthood. If you are a TBM(as I am)then you know in order to be exalted you must enter into the new and everlasting covenant of marriage. Sealed in the temple for time and all eternity. More priesthood.The first time I felt truly moved was about 3 years ago when I witnessed a baby blessing. It was a young father, a recent convert to the church, blessing his baby. He had invited quite a few men to stand in the circle and bless this tiny spirit so new to this world. They gathered and  formed the circle, placing one hand under the baby and the other on the shoulder of the elder next to him. It moved me that these men were joined in such a tender act and when the blessing ended and after the baby was shown to the congregation, there were warm embraces and slaps on the shoulder. For the first time I yearned to have an eternal companion I loved to be standing in one of those circles.</p>
<p>Late last year all the priesthood holders in my ward sang as a choir. I dont remember the song, but to see all of those men standing behind the pulpit singing, literally moved me to tears. Then today, the youth speaker canceled and the bishop(last minute) asked the three priests in our ward to share their favorite scripture and explain what it meant to them. These young men did fantastic. You could tell they were a little nervous, but they had scriptures ready and spoke in such a way that i was impressed with their conviction. I got a little misty seeing these young men, future missionaries, husbands, and fathers grow in their faith before my eyes. It&#8217;s somewhat affirming to know there are still men in the church who take the priesthood seriously.<br />
Can we bridge the ever growing  gap that exists between strong and effective women who don&#8217;t &#8220;need&#8221; a man, but require the priesthood in order to gain the exaltation we strive for?</p>

<p>Soren Kierkegaard (1813-1855) has written about the experience of Faith.  His short book &#8216;Fear and Trembling&#8217; discusses the experience of Abraham being asked to sacrifice his son Isaac, and his subsequent designation as the &#8216;Father of Faith&#8217;.  This is probably not the place for an in-depth discussion of this book but I want to outline his views because it asks some important questions about what Faith is, how we exercise it and its fruits.<span id="more-6332"></span></p>
<p>The first section of the book, is entitled, &#8216;Attunement&#8217;.  In this Kierkegaard explores a number of different narratives that may have occured as Abraham takes his son up the mount.  In one he characterises Abraham as scared, in another he is fearless, in another he is angry.  To me it seems that Kierkegaard is trying to help us realise that Abraham&#8217;s faith was not just in the act itself, but was exercised in every step in his journey?</p>
<p>Kierkegaard then poses a series of questions that the story of Abraham raises: but prior to that he outlines his view of faith as being able to give up everything and trust that you will receive it again on the strength of the absurd.  In other words, Abraham had faith because he gave up his son, but trusted he would be given back to him regardless of how absurd this hope was.  Is faith exercised in the absurd, or does it rest in the rational or logical?  I have always leaned toward the latter because I have been taught to study it out in my mind, but Kierkegaard&#8217;s challenge has made me re-think.  Is it not absurd to believe that Jesus has suffered for our sins?</p>
<p>The first question regards whether what is ethical can be suspended?  Can Abraham&#8217;s act to sacrifice his son (or Nephi&#8217;s act) be considered good despite it being unethical, or even contrary to God&#8217;s &#8216;general&#8217; commandments?  Does faith lead us to do things that are contrary to the commandments?  If not what do we do with Abraham and Nephi, because it seems they are to be damned?</p>
<p>The second question asks whether there is an absolute duty to God?  In a similar way Joseph Smith said &#8216;whatever God requires is right&#8217;!  Is this correct?  Do you believe that God would give you as an individual a specific command that might contradict what is more widely accepted as right?</p>
<p>The final question asks whether it was ethically defensible to conceal from Sariah or Isaac what he was going to do?</p>
<p>In each case Kierkegaard does not give an answer but leaves us with an either/or.  Either the ethical can be suspended,and their is an absolute duty to God and it is ethically defensible to conceal his intent or Abraham is not the &#8216;Father of Faith&#8217;?  My problem then is that I am not sure I can have this kind of faith, because it asks things of me that I feel unable to do.  Moreover, I am not even sure that I would want to have this kind of faith.  This is, probably, Kierkegaard&#8217;s intent.</p>
<p>I remember, as a naive Missionary, discussing with someone Joseph Smith&#8217;s practice of polygamy, which for me has many parallels with how Kierkegaard frames Abraham&#8217;s experience .  He argued that it was sinful.  I countered that it was practised in the Bible.  He said that it was for that time only, not now.  I asked, &#8216;if God asked you to practice polygamy would you do it?&#8217;   He said, &#8216;No&#8217;.  I smugly retorted, &#8216;Then that is why you are not a Prophet and Joseph Smith was&#8217;!  Unsurprisingly, he did not let us teach him.  I regret this now, not only because I was an arrogant 20 year old who was supposed to be an ambassador of Christ, but also because I see more clearly the dilemma of doing something so reprehensible to our values that it is absurd, and that this may be the real test of our faith? A test I am unsure I would pass.  But is this something God asks of us at all?  (This is not intended to be a discussion of polygamy).</p>

<p>The survey found that  Only 19% of those in the UK said they would die for their God/beliefs. This compares to 37% in Israel, 90% of those polled in Indonesia and Nigeria, and 71% in the USA and Lebanon.</p>

<p>A staggering 78% of those polled in the USA claimed to have studied religious texts, by far the largest figure, followed by 51% in Nigeria and 42% in the UK. This    compares to an average of 33%.</p>

<p>The poll also looked at the place of religion in the world. Almost a third (29%) of people in the UK believe that the world would be a more peaceful place without beliefs in God but very few people in other countries agreed. Just 6% of those polled in America agreed with this view, 11% in Israel and 9% in India. The average across all ten countries was 10%.Only 15% of those polled in America blamed people of other religions for much of the trouble in the world compared with more than a third (37%) in the UK and 33% in Israel.This figure fell to 8% of those polled in Indonesia, 24% in Lebanon and 17% in India.</p>

Across the ten countries, an average of 46% regularly attend a religious service but the figure was 21% in the UK, the second lowest behind Russia (7%). The highest figure was 91% for Nigerians, with 54% in the USA.</p>

However 25% of people in the UK and 29% of people in Israel said they never prayed.</p>

<p>The poll did reveal however that nearly 30% of all atheists polled admitted they prayed sometimes.</p>

<p>Asked whether a belief in a God/higher power makes for a better human being, well over 80% of people in most countries agreed, but by far the lowest figure was in the UK with just 56%.</p>

<p>Furthermore, just 42% of UK respondents believed God (or a higher power) judges their actions and the way they lived their lives compared to 76% in America, 72% in Israel, 81% in Nigeria and an average of 70%.</p>

<p>Exploring the issue of tolerance of different religions the poll found that more than 90% of all respondents in Nigeria, Indonesia and Lebanon believed their God was the only true God.This compares to 70% in Israel and just 31% in the UK.</p>

<p>The majority of those polled when asked if they believed death was the end disagreed. This was the case for more than half of the UK respondents (51%), 79% of those polled in Nigeria, 75% in Lebanon and 74% in the USA.</p>
<p>Looking at how attitudes change across different religions, the poll found that while 85% of Hindus and 83% of Muslims said they prayed regularly, only 65% of Christians did and barely a third (38%) of Jews.</p>
<p>When asked if their God was the only true God, 95% of Muslims said yes, compared with 68% of Christians and 66% of Jews.</p>
<p>But when asked if other religions were to blame for the troubles in the world, 34% of Jews agreed, while only 24% of Christians, 18% of Hindus and 14% of Muslims agreed.</p>

<p><em>&#8220;After spending years debating <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_White_(theologian)" target="_blank">James White</a>, I have noticed common tactics employed by people who want to win at any cost rather than seek a mutual understanding of the facts or even work toward a mutual disagreement. Ann Coulter is a good example of a political satirist who engages in this sort of rhetoric. Let&#8217;s take a close look, shall we?&#8221;<span id="more-5620"></span></em></p>
<p><strong>1. Make an outrageous claim.</strong> It doesn&#8217;t matter if it&#8217;s out of Mormon Doctrine, or if you take a comment out of context, or if the side you&#8217;re on is just as guilty as those you are making accusations against. The goal is <em>not</em> to be fair minded or even accurate; all you need to be concerned with is igniting an emotional response from the other person. Remember, you are always right and your opponent is always wrong; your job is simply to supply enough rope for your opponent to hang himself. Manipulative (e.g. &#8220;Don&#8217;t you think _____?&#8221;) and leading questions are also really effective here.</p>
<p><strong>2. Rely on mocking or sarcasm to ignite passion.</strong> If you are of a conservative ilk, rely on a mocking or morally superior tone to deliver your message (Ann Coulter). If you are liberal use a lot of sarcastic humor to exalt yourself above your opponent&#8217;s attempts at presenting himself/herself as morally superior (Al Franken).</p>
<p><strong>3. Do not give an inch. </strong>If your opponent happens to <em>stumble</em> upon a true statement, ignore, deny, or reframe the conversation! In all cases, NEVER concede even a minor point to your opponent. Also, be sure to ignore any sincere questions by your opponent. In the very least do not answer them directly. Again, the point is not to help the other person understand you, but to prove they are wrong.</p>
<p><strong>4. Make Your opponent work harder.</strong> Always remember that you are right, regardless of the facts presented, and you will eventually prove it by weathering any storm that may be created due to the information your opponent happens to give you. Most importantly, put them in a place where they feel like they have to prove you wrong. If they present troubling information to you about your own position simply refuse to acknowledge it. The fact is your opponent is either a brainwashed innocent or at worst, a conniving interloper who has no right to challenge your superior position, and only appears to have the nerve to do so without merit.</p>
<p><strong>5. Do not bother reading posts or listening to response from your opponent. </strong>After all, reading your opponent&#8217;s posts may ignite emotions within yourself, or take your mind off your primary goal, WINNING! Instead of reading, skim your opponent&#8217;s post for statements that can be molded to aid you in your ultimate goal. The best statements are usually the most irrelevant to your opponents point&#8211;why re-post something meaningful or relevant? Oh, and make sure you continue to apply the steady drumbeat or either mocking/moral superiority, or sarcastic humor.</p>
<p><strong>6. Stay the course!</strong> <strong>Or leave! </strong>Whatever you do, just don&#8217;t engage! Eventually your opponent will either hang himself or simply tire of the interaction; in both cases, you must declare victory immediately. Like any good staring contest it is not the person that presents the best case who wins, but the person who is left standing. If it just keeps going you <em>may</em> want to consider eventually checking out. There are two ways to do this, either just disappear quietly until the next post comes along that you can slam, or make a big announcement about why you are not coming back. Try to make everyone reading it feel bad about your departure, and say self-deprecating stuff like &#8220;I guess I&#8217;m just not popular here&#8221;). Whatever you do, NEVER admit to any good points the other side made in their last comment, and when you come back, make sure it is only to attack again.</p>
<p>How can we avoid this? How can we learn together even when we disagree?</p>
<p><strong>1. Ask sincere, open-ended questions.</strong> Look around and you&#8217;ll be surprised how little actually happens. Example, &#8220;What do you think about _____?&#8221; Amazing concept, but so often we end up trying to trip each other. Make sure your questions are not meant to lead the other person down a particular path, or that you don&#8217;t have some hidden underlying agenda.</p>
<p><strong>2. If you use sarcasm or a lot of humor, be kind.</strong> Even if you don&#8217;t like emoticons, make sure others understand your intention, and don&#8217;t use it as a weapon. I know many people (myself included) like to use mocking now and then, but we must refrain.</p>
<p><strong>3. Acknowledge (write in your replies) when the other person has a good point. </strong> Or, *gasp* when they say something you agree with.</p>
<p><strong>4. Monitor the conversation to make sure it is not one-sided.</strong> Is there always one person on the attack and the other constantly on defense, or is it more even-handed?</p>
<p><strong>5. Consider the whole comment.</strong> Don&#8217;t just pick out stuff to argue with.</p>
<p><strong>6. Apologize when appropriate.</strong> Take a break when you need to, but don&#8217;t completely check out or make threats when you get upset. Come back and engage. We can all learn from each other.</p>
<p><strong>7. When in doubt, <a href="http://mormonmatters.org/2009/05/25/please-respect-the-rules-of-common-decency/" target="_blank">ask Ray</a> what to do.</strong> He will have the answer.</p>
<p>Why do you converse with others online? More specifically, why do you engage in commenting back and forth with other people on Mormon Matters? To share your views? To influence others? To learn from others?</p>

<p>But these generalizations are limited and don&#8217;t explain why people fall at different ends of the spectrum or how to cultivate virtue as a society or raise children to be moral.</p>
<p>So, who tends to be more altruistic?</p>
<blockquote class="uncited">
<div>A specific cluster of emotional traits seem to go along with compassion. People who are emotionally secure, who view life&#8217;s problems as manageable and who feel safe and protected tend to show the greatest empathy for strangers and to act altruistically and compassionately. In contrast, people who are anxious about their own worth and competence, who avoid close relationships or are clingy in those they have tend to be less altruistic and less generous.</div>
</blockquote>
<p>It seems that some church members and programs increase <span id="lw_1241219123_5" class="yshortcuts">emotional security</span> and self-reliance, while others may create fear and anxiousness. Maybe this is just personalities of individuals that come to the surface.</p>
<p>Both forgiveness and revenge have been useful human tactics through time for different reasons:</p>
<blockquote class="uncited">
<div>both forgiveness and revenge &#8220;solved critical evolutionary problems for our ancestors.&#8221; <span id="lw_1241219123_6" class="yshortcuts" style="border-bottom: 1px dashed #0066cc; cursor: pointer;">Forgiveness</span> helps to preserve valuable relationships. Exacting revenge acts as a deterrent against attacks, cheating or freeloading. It also establishes the revenge taker as someone not to be crossed, preempting future attacks.</div>
</blockquote>
<p>Maybe the following explains &#8220;Mormon Persecution Complex&#8221; to some extent:</p>

<div>When people can count on the rule of law to punish infractions, they are less prone to seek personal revenge. Conversely, when society lacks a mechanism to defend people&#8217;s rights, &#8220;parents teach their children to cultivate a tough reputation and not let anyone get away with messing with them,&#8221; McCullough says.</div>

<div>So, parents who are protectionist, isolationist, provincial and defensive about being Mormons are going to perpetuate these &#8220;persecution&#8221; sentiments. Some recent JS lessons seem designed to do the same. Perhaps a few members of the correlation committee are of that type.</div>

<ul>
<li>Every family member or friend&#8217;s struggle would be a sign of your guilt for having failed them OR a sign that you should cut them off so you will not be tainted by association.</li>
<li>Every new person you met would be an opportunity for a convert rather than a friend (and if not a convert, not a friend).</li>
<li>You would carefully choose your words and deeds to demonstrate to others around you that you are living up to what you think they expect.</li>
<li>If you ever did disagree with someone, you&#8217;d have to make sure that somehow your disagreement put YOU on the side of the church and THEM on the other side.</li>
<li>If your spouse suddenly stopped attending church or became disaffected, you would stop loving them because they jeopardized your &#8220;perfect&#8221; image or your expectations for the Celestial Kingdom.</li>

<ul>
<li>The church does not equal Jesus, even if one believes Jesus is at the head of it.  The church is a human institution that should ideally inspire us and draw us closer to Him.</li>
<li>It&#8217;s pretty arrogant to put yourself (or your perceptions) in the role of Jesus and to assume that anyone who disagrees with you is rejecting you as the Savior was rejected.</li>
<li>Being righteous does not equal being right.  In fact, once you start getting too concerned about the latter, you can kiss the former goodbye.</li>
<li>The greatest two commandments are to love God and our fellow man as ourselves.  If we can&#8217;t even unconditionally love those closest to us (family and friends), how can we expect to love our enemies (also required)?</li>
<li>&#8220;Perfect love casteth out fear.&#8221;  We can&#8217;t love people if we are consumed by fear of rejection (from either man or God).</li>
</ul>
<p>Is this a particular problem in the church?  Do people really live their lives like this?  Do you know anyone like this?  Are you like this sometimes?  How do you take off the mask and &#8220;let your light so shine&#8221;?  Discuss.</p>

Did Renaissance mothers warn their children of the evils of the lute-players and picket the gay Shakespearean actors?</span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span><span style="color: black;">All this talk about Satan led me to ponder on the subject for some time, and after waking up from my intense pondering I felt warmed by the Spirit, although it could have just been the chili. Satan remains an enigma, but here are a few of my thoughts to help build some discussion.</span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span><span style="color: black;">Let&#8217;s face it, Satan is one hell of a dedicated guy, or as my mother would say, &#8220;he&#8217;s been a real trooper.&#8221;</span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span><span style="color: black;">For over six thousand years on earth, The Evil One has shown tireless dedication to The Plan and has played his role of opposition to perfection. Think about that &#8211; <span id="lw_1241588144_1" class="yshortcuts">Perfection</span>. It&#8217;s been pure busting-his-hump-evil for all these thousands of years. He&#8217;s had no long weekends, no vacations, and has had to serve as a role model for billions of other pathological liars, thieves, psychopaths, and pig-body-snatchers. The only real benefit I can think of is not having to worry about rising health-care costs. <span> </span>That we could all be so dedicated!</span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span><span style="color: black;">Over this time he&#8217;s been called the worst of names: The Dragon, the Devil, the Tempter, a snake &#8211; and those are just the English names. Rumor has it that the Italians and Spaniards are much harsher.</span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span><span style="color: black;">So, what&#8217;s in it for Satan for playing this role perfectly for all these millennium? <span id="lw_1241588144_2" class="yshortcuts">Eternal damnation</span>. Yup, all this hard work and it&#8217;s, &#8220;Thanks giving us a perfect 100%, now off to <span id="lw_1241588144_3" class="yshortcuts">Outer Darkness</span>.&#8221; I can&#8217;t imagine what this Outer Darkness would be like, other than really crowded. We&#8217;ve been told that 1/3 of the pre-mortal spirits choose, for some reason, to go to <span id="lw_1241588144_4" class="yshortcuts">The Dark Side</span> &#8211; way before Anakin Skywalker made it hip.</span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><img class="alignright" src="../wp-content/uploads/2008/04/satan.jpg" alt="http://mormonmatters.org/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/satan.jpg" width="144" height="128" /><span><span style="color: black;">Counting those that have lived on the earth, we would have to be approaching 50 billion full-time evil-doers. <span> </span>That&#8217;s more <span id="lw_1241588144_5" class="yshortcuts" style="border-bottom: 1px dashed #0066cc; cursor: pointer;">evil spirits</span> than McDonald&#8217;s has served in hamburgers. And I believe we&#8217;re only counting humans here, not Neanderthals, Cro-Magnons, etc. Regardless, it&#8217;s going to shoulder-to-shoulder in that Outer Darkness. Even if Satan was only to give a quick 5-second air-high-five to all these followers, it would take him over 475,000 years. I suppose there won&#8217;t be much else to do in The Darkness than gnash teeth, so the high-fives might serve as a welcomed distraction.</span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span><span style="color: black;">Satan&#8217;s also had to put up with a real drop-off in main-stream support lately. Back in the day, there were witches, demons, possessed animals, etc., all over the place. Then, people really got it together and started <span id="lw_1241588144_6" class="yshortcuts" style="border-bottom: 1px dashed #0066cc; cursor: pointer;">burning the witches</span>. Well, sometime in the eighteenth century the interest in witchcraft as a career really fell out of favor with the ladies. These days, it&#8217;s just the nuts that claim to be witches, and anyone that witnesses a body-possession is put away for their own safety. There still exists some childhood fears of monsters, but overall it seems that Satan&#8217;s golden years are behind him.</span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span><span style="color: black;">Through all of this general decline in interest, Satan still keeps plugging away. Year, after year.</span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span><span style="color: black;">And just think &#8211; all Satan would have to do to completely thwart The Plan would be to sit down and do absolutely nothing. Do no evil, provide no opposition, refuse to do his part &#8211; just, do nothing at all. Within a minute, he could turn the whole Plan upside-down and really stick it to the Man. Surely I&#8217;m missing something here. It just seems too easy.</span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span><span style="color: black;">So hopefully, Satan doesn&#8217;t read blogs and has more evil things to do than surf the Net. I&#8217;d hate to be held accountable for providing Satan with the idea of how to wreck The Plan and leave us to our own evil devices. It certainly didn&#8217;t work out well for those <span id="lw_1241588144_7" class="yshortcuts">Lord of the Flies</span> kids. It&#8217;d be a dark day indeed if we had to focus on fixing ourselves instead of blaming The Evil One.</span></span></p>

In the terrestrial and in the telestial kingdoms there will be no marriage. Those who enter there will remain &#8220;separately and singly&#8221; forever. <p>Joseph Smith said that even the telestial Kingdom was thousands of times better than this world and if we had a glimpse of it we would kill ourselves now to get there. I think many of us now would disagree with Joseph Smith Jr in light of reading the more current views of Joseph Fielding Smith.</p>
<p>In the <a href="http://www.lds.org/library/display/0,4945,161-1-11-1,00.html">family proclamation</a> we learn that Gender is an essential characteristic of individual premortal, mortal, and eternal identity and purpose. But the family proclamation is not kingdom specific to whether will still have our male or female gender if we don&#8217;t make it to the highest kingdom of the Celestial Kingdom.</p>
<p>I thought I was being unique <em>(pun) </em>in this post but as I have researched,being a so called  EUNUCH is a phrase used in the Bloggernacle since 2006 its called  <a href="http://faithpromotingrumor.wordpress.com/2006/12/18/the-tk-smoothie-rule/">TK SMOOTHIE</a></p>
<p>It has two definitions</p>
<ol type="1">
<li>The logical conclusion for JFS, then, was to say      that the people in the TK would not have male or female genitalia.</li>
<li>If a doctrine of the church seems like it has      been created in order to &#8220;fix&#8221; or explain another, it might be a TK      Smoothie. The TK Smoothie is eponymous for all doctrines that are probably      bogus but exist in order to clarify some other doctrine or speculation.</li>

<p>In Mormonism, we have an expanded picture of life that extends before this mortal life and then on into the eternities. However, when you really dig into this, it turns out that we have very few details on what to expect after this life, and the details we do have come mostly from talks given almost 175 years ago. And to say that our expectations of &#8216;Heaven,&#8217; have changed quite a bit since then is a gross understatement.</p>
<p>Despite all the speculation, one detail that we know for sure: unless you make it to the highest degree of the Celestial Kingdom, there will be no eternal sex. Basically, you&#8217;d be turned into a Telestial/Terrestrial Kingdom Smoothie (TK Smoothie). I like to imagine these lesser-Kingdoms as the Barbie &amp; Ken Kingdoms. Everyone walking around looking beautiful and perfect for eternity, but having a smooth under-carriage like Barbie or Ken.</p>

<p>I would like to believe as Parley P Pratt describes that this mutual affection will not only be for this life but carried through to all the kingdoms after this life to all of our Brothers and Sisters who have lived on this earth.</p>

<li>If you make it to the Celestial Kingdom how      would you feel when you visit a Parent, Grandparent, Brother, Sister, Son      or Daughter in the Terrestrial Kingdom with out any Gender?</li>

<li>Is there any current doctrine that overrides his      beliefs?</li>
<li>If JFS doctrine is correct the word Brother and Sister takes on a whole      different meaning in the Terrestrial and Telestial Kingdom?</li>
<li>Is it silly doctrine we should jettison?</li>
<li>If it is still true do you think if we      emphasised it more it might motivate members to push harder for the      Celestial Kingdom?</li>
<li>Doctrines of Salvation is most of it safe doctrine we can use in our talks and lessons ?  Is      some of it suspect and if it is how do we know what that is? Do you think of it as interesting reading not really fiction      but not really solid doctrinally? How would you describe it?</li>

If one calls that despair or discouragement &#8220;doubt&#8221;, then I agree that doubt is the opposite of faith.  However, I personally see doubt as uncertainty, recognizing the possibility that what we hope for or believe is not true. For me, that is an inherent component of faith. Without that uncertainty or doubt, I do not think faith exists (because it would be knowledge or certainty).&#8221;</li>
<li>&#8220;I&#8217;ve heard plenty of Church leaders admit to feeling doubts, and Joseph Smith seemed full of them. But quotes like this do set-up a certain mindset among the &#8220;faithful&#8221; that they should never entertain doubt, or else. The sad thing here is that this state-of-mind is temporary at best, and can often lead to complete loss of faith. But some GC talks seem more designed to rally than educate, which explains stuff like this.&#8221;</li>

They aren&#8217;t competitors, they&#8217;re collaborators &#8211; they encourage each other. Faith exists because of doubt, and doubt because of faith. IMO, faith without doubt is smug arrogance. Show me someone who has no doubt, and I&#8217;ll show you someone who has no faith.&#8221;</li>
<li>&#8220;Pope Benedict referred to Mother Thesesa&#8217;s doubts as the &#8220;silence of God,&#8221; and said that all true believers must learn to deal with the silence of God which inevitably come to all of us.&#8221;</li>

Joseph Smith certainly did&#8211;see the first verses of section 121. And the book of Job is full of doubts and anguish (although, in the condensed version we skip from Job&#8217;s refusal to condemn God and go straight to the restoration of his prior blessing, and we overlook his struggles and anguish and anger expressed in the intervening chapters).&#8221;</li>
<li>&#8220;If faith is a spiritual gift, then only some will receive it. I&#8217;m paraphrasing, but the scripture says some will have the give of faith and some will have the gift to believe those with faith and some will have other gifts. And yet then we are told it is a sin if we don&#8217;t have this gift?&#8221;</li>
<li>&#8220;When church leaders are asking for us to have faith in God, they really mean have faith in what they tell you about God and what the scriptures say about God, but neither are God, they are just ideas.&#8221;</li>
</ul>
<p>What do you think?  Does doubt drive out faith?  Or is faith without doubt smug arrogance?  Is doubt an essential part of faith development?  Is some doubt bad (paralyzing doubt) and some good (energizing doubt)?  Is doubt the same as &#8220;the silence of God&#8221; that Mother Theresa, Joseph Smith, Jesus, and Job all experienced?  Do you view doubt as a complement to faith or the enemy of faith?  Is there a &#8220;war on doubt&#8221; in the church?</p>

<p><span style="#000000;"><span style="Arial;">Another view is of inoculation especially when it comes to nakedness or nudity. Christian nudist views are “Sexual decadence such as pornography and <a title="Pedophilia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pedophilia"><span style="#000000;">pedophilia</span></a> (paedophilia) is the direct result of a lack of exposure to nudity in childhood (particularly of the same approximate age). This is most likely to occur when combined with other factors such as extreme parental attitudes (e.g. body shame) and social isolation. They believe that those that are raised their entire lives within Christian naturism should not have any temptation<a title="Temptation" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temptation"></a> to engage in such behaviour “such as pornography.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="#000000;"><span style="Arial;">Their experience and testimony is that complete nakedness does not incite individuals to lustful thoughts, unlike for example, a revealing skimpy top that exposes a good deal of a woman&#8217;s cleavage or a very short mini-skirt. When naked, all body parts are seen as equal and non-sexualised. When clothed, the focus is on the private parts that are partly revealed and thus objectified and sexualised</span></span></p>

<p>I share that background to explain why – at Sunstone West this past weekend – I took such a keen interest in a screening of the film “Nobody Knows: The Untold Story of Black Mormons.” Produced by Margaret Blair Young and Darius Gray, this movie goes through the history of black people in the Church and the evolution of the priesthood ban, which is largely &#8220;credited&#8221; to Brigham Young. Apparently, he evolved (or de-volved) in his views, as the movie had some interesting early quotes from him that were far more kind and tolerant towards blacks than some of his later whoppers. The historical context painted by the film shows an influx of Mormon converts from the southern states who brought their slaves to Utah. Henceforth, Young made the decision to make Utah into a slave-friendly territory. Another bit of historical context that I don’t remember being mentioned in the film is that the Democratic Party (then pro-slavery) was also more tolerant of plural marriage, which was likely another factor in the decision.</p>
<p>Fascinating as the history was, the movie was far more touching for me on a personal level. I was utterly floored by the powerful testimonies shared by the many black LDS members interviewed on camera. Many of these folks joined the Church while the ban still existed. One African-American sister shared the heartbreaking observation that the first time she was ever called a “nigger” was in the Salt Lake temple. Yet, she was far from angry. Like many others of all races, her life had been touched in a positive way by the Gospel. That many of these folks retained a love and loyalty to an organization that had rejected them for so long was amazing. The Church apparently did not sponsor this project, but it should buy every copy that it can and send it out to all four corners of the Earth. Seriously, who better to share the hopeful message of the Gospel than a group of people who consistently getting the short end of the stick.</p>
<p>Another interesting tidbit from the film was a story about Dr. Cecil “Chip” Murray, retired pastor of the First AME Church of Los Angeles (which was founded by a former slave of Mormon pioneers). Murray shares a story on camera that he was once invited to meet with then-President Hinckley at the Church Office Building. At that meeting, he says Hinckley apologized to him for the Church&#8217;s participation in the slavery issue and for its part in perpetuating prejudice against black people. How broad he meant that is arguable, but it certainly seems a long way from just three decades ago.</p>
<p>Ms. Young was there and hosted a lively discussion afterwards. She is working on getting the film distributed. Apparently, Howard University has agreed to show it on its PBS station. Hopefully, BYU does the same. Anyone interested should start bugging their local PBS station. And maybe some e-mails to Netflix to spark their interest wouldn’t hurt, either.</p>

<ul>
<li><strong>Association</strong>.  Having our views misunderstood or misconstrued by outsiders or even by our own members.  For example, do some members begin to think that we have a different or stronger stance on issues because our associates do?  Also, when an &#8220;ally&#8221; does something really stupid (many have), does that taint us by association?</li>
<li><strong>Motivation</strong>.  While our alliances might coincide, often our motives are quite different below the surface from those of our allies.  When those motives differ, our actions are likely to differ as well as our desired outcomes.  Isn&#8217;t it also likely that we might be used to achieve ends with which we disagree?</li>
<li><strong>Conflict of Interest</strong>.  Once an alliance is formed, it&#8217;s much harder to separate our interests where they naturally diverge.  There may be pressure by virtue of the relationship to allow our allies greater latitude for things we might otherwise have taken a stance against.</li>
</ul>
<p>Clearly, there are some groups we have been leery to court as allies because the risk was too high:  the FLDS, staunch pro-life groups, the ERA (not sure that was really under consideration, but just wanted to see if you were paying attention), and the religious right.  But consider for a moment some of the alliances church members have formed.  Some of these are alliances the organization has sought out, and others are more &#8220;grass roots&#8221; alliances that members have formed, thinking their interests coincide:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Prop 8 Allies.</strong> Many of these are the same guys who:
<ul>
<li>think we are a cult</li>
<li>want to &#8220;pray the gay away&#8221;</li>
<li>make some very hateful and inaccurate remarks about homosexuals</li>
<li>supported Huckabee to knock Romney out of the race for POTUS because Romney believed Satan and Jesus were brothers and apparently in each others&#8217; fave five.  (Hey, I guess by that logic we also think Huck and Satan are brothers!)</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li><strong>Focus on the Family</strong>.  This is James Dobson&#8217;s ministry to protect families.  But they ALSO support school sponsored prayer, corporal punishment, abortion intervention, and intelligent design.  Additionally, they are far more politically involved in their causes than we are, and many of their causes are ones on which we have no clear stance or don&#8217;t go as far as they do (see the aforementioned items:  we don&#8217;t have a stance on school sponsored prayer, we caution against actions like corporal punishment at least within the family, our abortion stance is softer than theirs, and we teach evolution at BYU).</li>
<li><strong>Feature Films for Family</strong>.  Enterprises like this take a nice idea (clean entertainment that is family friendly) as a starting point.  Often they lack the talent and resources to make it high quality or a good value.</li>
<li><strong>Clean Flicks</strong>.  This UT-based company that catered to the LDS crowd by removing objectionable movie content was more of a benevolently-viewed off-shoot, but they were certainly viewed as associated with Mormons.  Hollywood didn&#8217;t like being edited by do-gooders and sued them over it (frankly these people don&#8217;t like to be edited by anyone!  have you ever seen a Director&#8217;s Cut?); Clean Flicks discontinued.  Then the owner was implicated in an unsavory pornography scam in Utah County.  In our lovely deseret.</li>
<li><strong>Rush Limbaugh.</strong> Obviously, this alliance only applies to those Mormons who are also politically conservative Americans, but since that seems to be a very vocal majority, this association is relevant.  Limbaugh emcompasses basic political characteristics:  fat, loud hypocrisy.  Frankly, he&#8217;s not doing Republicans any favors either.  Maybe if the NRA cuts him from their Christmas card list, he&#8217;ll finally know he&#8217;s gone too far.</li>
<li><strong>Stockpiling WingNuts.</strong> There&#8217;s clearly a distinction between the reasonable counsel to be prepared for emergencies and layoffs by keeping a supply of food and money on hand and the wingnuts who are building a bunker in the backyard with a stockpile of weapons in case they have to kill and eat their neighbors.  There are some supposedly &#8220;like-minded&#8221; individuals out there wearing tin foil hats and selling 72 hour emergency kits to church members.</li>
<li><strong>&#8220;Obamanation&#8221; Armageddon Theorists.</strong> This is an unpleasant blend of political conservativism (fine in its own right) and Rapture-mongering (the idea that we can bring the second coming on despite the statements that say &#8220;no man knows the hour.&#8221;)  Can&#8217;t we disagree politically without resorting to religious fear-mongering?</li>
</ul>
<p>So, what other strange bedfellows are out there?  How do we avoid &#8220;the appearance of evil&#8221; by associating with those who share a passing interest, but in reality have aims that are far different from our own?  Is this an inevitable problem, or are there ways to more clearly distance ourselves from allies whose agendas differ or even contradict ours on many points?</p>
<p>Discuss.</p>

<p>As far as I can see, setting our modern Latter-day Saint conception of a family (a patriarchal unit of one man and one woman and their biological or adopted children, including traditional and limited roles for each) into a &#8220;doctrine&#8221; began with the Proclamation on the Family in late 1995.  By 1996, a talk by Mormon Apostle Robert D. Hales, &#8220;<a href="http://lds.org/ldsorg/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=2354fccf2b7db010VgnVCM1000004d82620aRCRD&amp;locale=0&amp;sourceId=28fddbdcc370c010VgnVCM1000004d82620a____&amp;hideNav=1">The Eternal Family</a>,&#8221; identified the &#8220;doctrine of the family&#8221; as an eternal principle.  In this talk, Hales contrasts the LDS conception of the family with Satan&#8217;s major effort to &#8220;destroy the sanctity of the family, demean the importance of the role of men and women, encourage moral uncleanliness and violations of the sacred law of chastity, and to discourage parents from placing the bearing and rearing of children as one of their highest priorities.&#8221;  Thus, for the past 13 years, Latter-day Saints have been encouraged to view other definitions of &#8220;family&#8221; as pernicious and threatening to their efforts to live their religion.</p>
<p>This struggle has reached the point where the majority of Mormons are unable to view with equanimity the choices of others to define the word &#8220;family&#8221; differently than themselves.  I have seen the following questions posed to such LDS members:</p>
<ul>
<li>Why is the church so threatened by the lifestyles of others?</li>
<li>Why the need to force views and personal morals on others through the laws of the land?</li>
<li>How are individuals who make different choices about the makeup of their families harming or infringing on the rights of anyone?</li>
<li>Didn&#8217;t the Church and its members object (for the same reasons) when under fire for practicing polygamy a century ago?</li>
</ul>
<p>Unfortunately, members have great difficulty even considering such questions, having been persuaded that our &#8220;doctrine of the family&#8221; is the only  true position, and that acknowledgment of others would stand in the way of our eternal salvation.  This most recent visiting teaching message is a further step in advancing a paradigm that the LDS &#8220;doctrine of the family&#8221; is at war with and under attack by competing definitions of the family, spawned by Satan.  In near military terms, the message demands:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #008000;"><strong>How Can I Defend the Family?</strong></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #008000;">D&amp;C 88:119: &#8220;Establish a house, even a house of prayer, a house of fasting, a house of faith, a house of learning, a house of glory, a house of order, a house of God.&#8221;</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #008000;">Elder M. Russell Ballard of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles: &#8220;I call upon members of the Church and on committed parents, grandparents, and extended family members everywhere to hold fast to [the family] proclamation, to make it a banner not unlike General Moroni&#8217;s &#8216;title of liberty,&#8217; and to commit ourselves to live by its precepts. . . .</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #008000;">&#8220;In today&#8217;s world, where Satan&#8217;s aggression against the family is so prevalent, parents must do all they can to fortify and defend their families. But their efforts may not be enough. Our most basic institution of family desperately needs help and support from the extended family and the public institutions that surround us&#8221; (&#8220;What Matters Most Is What Lasts Longest,&#8221; Liahona and Ensign, Nov. 2005, 42-43).</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="color: #008000;">Elder Robert S. Wood of the Seventy: &#8220;For too many, responsibility seems to end with hand-wringing and exclamations of dismay. Yet talk without action accomplishes little. We need to be vigorously engaged in the world. If our schools are inadequate or destructive of moral values, we must work with fellow members of the community to bring about change. If our neighborhoods are unsafe or unhealthy, we must join with the civic-minded to devise solutions. If our cities and towns are polluted, not only with noxious gases but soul-destroying addictions and smut, we must labor to find legitimate ways to eliminate such filth. . . . We have the responsibility to be a blessing to others, to our nation, to the world&#8221; (&#8220;On the Responsible Self,&#8221; Ensign, Mar. 2002, 30-31).</span></p>
<p>I would like to revisit the question posed in the Visiting Teaching message, &#8220;Why must I defend the doctrine of the family?&#8221;  Why should we couch this question in adversarial terms?  Does the &#8220;doctrine of the family&#8221; place in jeopardy those LDS families who have chosen to define their familial roles a bit differently than the average?</p>
<p>In the quotation above, General Relief Society President Julie Beck is telling me, <span style="color: #000000;">&#8220;</span><span style="color: #000000;">as a covenant-keeping Latter-day Saint woman, you know that raising your voice in defense of the doctrine of the family is critical to the strength of families the world over.&#8221;  I am a temple-attending, and, I believe, a covenant-keeping LDS woman, however, I know no such thing.  I see the strength of families the world over to lie in unconditional love, the forming of strong bonds, acceptance and support of difficult realities and choices.  Most families I know do their best to live in accordance with strong moral principles, though these may differ widely.  I know strong families made up of two males, I know strong families with the husband as primary child caregiver, I know strong polygamous families.  I would like to raise my voice in defense of them all.<br />

The 1986 novel tells the story of Frank Windham, a Mormon cowboy from southern Utah. Frank struggles with his faith and finding his place in Mormon culture. Topics including sexual sin, backsliding, self-mutilation, and guilt have made this novel pretty controversial in many Mormon settings. Despite being beautifully written, I&#8217;ve always thought that the true genious of the novel is the way Frank envisions God &#38; Jesus. Something happens during the transmission of Heavenly knowlege from God into the human mind. We are terribly incapable of understanding or comprehending God. And this means that our visions and revelations, as sacred as they may be, aren&#8217;t actually visions of God. They&#8217;re human interpretations of glory beyond our understanding. We have visions of God &#8211; glorious visions &#8211; real visions &#8211; but they&#8217;re filtered through an earthly lens colored by our personal circumstances. We understand God based on who we need Him to be. This isn&#8217;t to denigrate the authenticity of visions, but we should be careful when trying to make categorical statements about God based on an earthly vision. <p>At one point in the novel, Frank is feeling guilty because of his backsliding and he imagines God pointing a gun at him, calling him to repentance. For some this is absurd, but for Frank, it was as real as any other heavenly vision. His understanding of God is shaped by his experiences. Whereas God communicated his wrath to Adam through banishment, to Noah through flooding, to Moses through serpents and plagues, He communicated his wrath to Frank through a rifle.</p>
<p>By the end of the novel, Frank imagines Jesus as a Cowboy, riding a horse with cigarette in hand. It&#8217;s an account that is sure to rub many Mormons the wrong way, but it&#8217;s who Frank needed Jesus to be in order to have faith in Him. A merciful God wouldn&#8217;t send Frank anything less than Cowboy Jesus.</p>
<p>So we can talk about who God is, what He looks like, or where He came from, but it doesn&#8217;t matter.  What matters is that He is.</p>
<p>I don&#8217;t know much about God, but i&#8217;m pretty sure Jesus rides a bicycle.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A recent article in <a href="http://www.time.com/time/health/article/0,8599,1879016-3,00.html">Time </a>discusses several studies about the correlation between faith and health.  Does church attendance contribute to a healthier, longer life?  Is Mormon culture more or less health-promoting than other faiths?<span id="more-4262"></span>A few things noted in various studies in the article:</p>
<ul>
<li>Intercessory prayer for the sick only has a health benefit when the sick person knows about it.    Does prayer for the sick make them healthy?  If so, how does it work?  It is simply placebo effect (sounds a lot like being healed according to your faith) or is there more to it?</li>

<p style="text-align: left;"><img src="http://www.superiway.net/immanuel/prayer.jpg" alt="http://www.superiway.net/immanuel/prayer.jpg" width="123" height="145" />So, why all these health benefits?</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Community centers</strong>.  Social benefits of church attendance or being in an extended family of believers.  Some congregations deliberately work together to promote health or weight loss.</li>
<li><strong>Friendships</strong>.  Individual relationships can provide the extra support needed to relieve stress, to feel understood, and to care for each other when ill.</li>
<li><strong>Physical sensations associated with houses of worship</strong>.  As a hospital can contribute to wellness (or illness if dirty or depressing), so can houses of worship transport one&#8217;s body by creating feelings of comfort and health.</li>
<li><strong>Belief that the body is a temple</strong>.  When you believe that your body is sacred or divine, you are not only more likely to take care of it, but you create health through your emotional state.</li>
<li><strong>Prayer&#8217;s impact on the brain</strong>.  Prayer and meditation can literally transport the body and create health.</li>
</ul>
<p><img class="alignright" src="http://pics.livejournal.com/dimitridze/pic/00129q9x" alt="http://pics.livejournal.com/dimitridze/pic/00129q9x" />So, while every church has health benefits, what are the unique components to Mormonism that lead to a healthier life?</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Focus on Families.</strong> Healthy family relationships that are supportive and free from abuse are probably the number one prolonger of life.</li>
<li><strong>Visiting/home teaching</strong>.  The sense that someone knows and cares that you exist is a powerful force for those who might otherwise succumb to despair or feel they are alone in illness.  Friendship is one of the great health benefits of religion.  Plus, you may get a rush of endorphins when your VTers just can&#8217;t get to you in the month, feeling like you have extra time in your schedule.</li>
<li><strong>Fasting</strong>.  Many religions and spiritual disciplines prize fasting for its health benefits in clearing the body of toxins.  Mormon fasting also has the benefit of altruism; those fasting feel good about donating the cost of the skipped meals to the poor.</li>
<li><strong>Lay clergy &amp; participation expectations</strong>.  The more engaged you are in your religion, the more likely you are to reap health benefits from fellowship, service, and a sense of purpose or meaning.</li>
<li><strong>Prayer</strong>.  Prayer can literally help your body heal in transcending the temporal concerns that might plague you.  Deepest prayer accesses parts of the brain not normally used.</li>
<li><strong>Priesthood blessings</strong>.  Rituals associated with healing allow faith to release the benefits to the body, much like a placebo effect.  The better the ritual, the more convincing environment for faith (think suspension of disbelief).</li>
<li><strong>Temple attendance</strong>.  Boring?  Mystical?  Transcendent?  If for no other reason, the temple provides a health benefit through silent meditation (anything above a stage whisper is gauche) and complete isolation from outside distractions such as blackberries and whining kids.</li>
<li><strong>Tithing &amp; church welfare.</strong> Especially in trying economic times, it&#8217;s a comfort to know that there is a fallback with church welfare for those full tithe payers.</li>
<li><strong>Word of Wisdom</strong>.  If for no other reason than eschewing alcohol and tobacco, the WoW would have health benefits for those who might otherwise O.D. on harmful substances.  In times of stress or illness, though, eliminating coffee and tea and eating meat sparingly can have additional health benefits.</li>
</ul>
<p>What are the components to Mormonism that could lead to reduced health?  Are any of these unique to Mormonism?</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Stress</strong>.  This varies from person to person, but there seems to be a correlation between high levels of belief, perfectionism (expecations of perfection from oneself and others), and responsibility (aka stewardship).  If we could just get rid of that pesky middle one, all would be well.  IOW, &#8220;be ye therefore perfect&#8221; could land you six feet under.</li>
<li><strong>Two words:  Funeral potatoes</strong>.  It&#8217;s hard to imagine a more cholesterol laden food.  Oh, wait.  Honey butter.  Possibly fry sauce.  So-called Mormon foods are neither good for the body, nor for the belly.  If you want to develop a hefty pair of Relief Society arms, go to a ward potluck.</li>
<li><strong>Repression</strong>.  Repressing one&#8217;s feelings can lead to depression, ulcers, and can weaken the immune system and make one more prone to all kinds of illness.  Those who feel they have to put on a mask to fit in to Mormon culture are going to be less healthy, first emotionally, then physically.  There has to be room in the culture for a diverse array of people to feel comfortable being their authentic selves.  We literally kill people when we don&#8217;t accept them for who they are.  And last I checked, &#8220;Thou shalt not kill&#8221; was still one of the top ten no-nos.</li>
</ul>
<p>So, is Mormonism more or less healthy than other faiths or about the same?  Are there times when someone should leave the church for health reasons?  How can we make church healthier for all?  Discuss.</p>

Today&#8217;s post is from guest poster Melodrama.  As I thought about the ramifications of the ideas in different realms of my life and particularly in my worship, I was struck, because the point of the quote actually seems so opposite of my experience with the corporate nature of the church. Most lessons or talks focus on checklists or commandments or assignments: the ABC&#8217;s of revelation, the 4 steps to repentance, lists on chalkboards of how to keep x commandment better. Is it because they are afraid that if they teach us the longing for what Joseph Smith claimed to have had, a very personal relationship with God, that they can&#8217;t deliver? Or are the checklists and assignments necessary for the institution of the church to survive and [...]]]></description>

<p>I thought of K, a little girl I taught in Primary. At her baptism, her excitement got the best of her as she literally ran from the chapel to the font when it was her turn. Or a woman I watched baptized in the inner-city ward I used to attend. She could not contain her joy as she was raised out of the water, and it was manifest in a boisterous shriek of happiness. Her active participation in our church was short-lived, typical for the baptisms in that ward. I used to complain that the people the missionaries brought forth were not ready to fully commit to the church and its teachings, but who can deny the joy in her heart that day and who can tell the power it had in her life?</p>
<p><img class="alignright" src="http://www.auburn.edu/research/vpr/urfp/images/checklist2.jpg" alt="" width="129" height="112" />Others express their joy in a more subdued and quiet way, but these examples of those whose emotions were oblivious to procedure and protocol made me reminisce of my own baptism. While I don&#8217;t remember the details, and I&#8217;m certain I was not a runner or a screamer, I do not recall being assigned to baptism. I like to think I am pretty typical, that I chose baptism, not because I was commanded to do so, but because even as a little girl, I sensed the love of God and had a longing for the divine.<br />

And nearly 30 years later, as I sat in church one Sunday in my ward in December, I was notified we would unexpectedly end one hour early due to problems with the facilities. When the bishop came in to announce it, one woman physically clapped at her excitement. As everyone went to find their children and leave, one man said, &#8220;I&#8217;ve never seen a happier bunch of Mormons&#8221;. It sort of begs the question, why build a boat if you have no desire to set sail to sea? If church is supposed to answer those longings for us, why are we happiest when we are freed from our obligation of attending? Must we have herdings and assignments because our longings are not enough to sustain us in the work of building a ship?</p>
<p>I wonder, are we efficiently building boats only to turn around and build another one and never recognize the endless immensity of the sea?</p>
