<p>I was really impressed with the lineup of experts Kenny interviewed.  The most famous people include Richard Bushman, LDS assistant historian Richard Turley, CoC Apostle Andrew Bolton, Washington State University Religion and Sociology professor Armand Mauss, and BYU Church History professor Alex Baugh, among an impressive list of guests.  He outlined a series of events leading up to the Hauns Mill Massacre and the Extermination Order.  Here are some of the key events:</p>
<ul>
<li>July 20, 1833.  Bishop Partridge is told to leave Jackson County immediately.  He refuses and is tarred and feathered.  Three days later, he signs an agreement to leave the county.  Ballentine doesn&#8217;t really address the reasons why the Missourians were upset at the Mormons, though he does mention that the first Missourians wanted slavery to be legal, while the Mormons from the North were generally against slavery.  WW Phelps published an article in the Evening and Morning Star that Mormons wanted to welcome people of all color.  This is the reason the Missourians were upset, which is why they attacked Bishop Partridge, and destroyed the Mormon printing press.  (Joseph was living in Kirtland at this time.)</li>
<li>July 4, 1838.  Rigdon issued another fiery patriotic sermon (following his &#8220;Salt Sermon&#8221;) stating that the Mormons and Missourians would wage a “war of extermination…one party or the other”.  It seems the subsequent Extermination Order by Governor Boggs wasn&#8217;t quite what Rigdon had in mind.</li>
<li>Aug 6, 1838 – Mormons in Daviess County were prevented from voting.  The Whig candidate said Mormons were only supposed to live in Caldwell County and should be ineligible to vote.  He was concerned that Mormons would vote for the Democratic Candidate, because Mormons were overwhelming Democrats back then.  A big brawl broke out that has often been called a “battle”.  There were exaggerated rumors that Mormons were killed.</li>
<li>Aug 19, 1838 &#8211; Mormons were expelled from DeWitt, in Daviess County.  Following the election, Missourians decided to expel Mormons.</li>
<li>Oct 18, 1838 &#8211; The Mormons decide to retaliate.  Known as the Daviess Expedition, a group of Danites (a secret Mormon militia group) led an effort to expel Missourians from Gallatin, Millport and Grindstone Fork.   Mormons plundered the property and burned the stores and houses to the ground.</li>
<li>Oct 24, 1838 &#8211; The Battle of Crooked River.  Mormons attack and scatter the Missouri Militia.  Many of the Missouri Militia erroneously believe all others are killed.  Only 1 Missourian was killed, but LDS Apostle David Patten (known as &#8220;Captain FearNot&#8221;), Danite leader Gideon Carter were both killed; 9 other Mormons were wounded.</li>
<li>Oct 27, 1838 &#8211; Governor Lilburn Boggs issues the Extermination Order; &#8220;the Mormons must be treated as enemies, and must be exterminated or driven from the State if necessary for the public peace&#8230;&#8221;</li>
<li>October 30, 1838 &#8211; The Hauns Mill Massacre; 18 Mormons are killed, ranging in age from 10-year old Sardius Smith, to 62 year old Thomas McBride.  I would like to quote directly from the film.</li>
</ul>
<blockquote><p>“On October 30, 1838, a large group of armed Missourians marched on the small and peaceful Mormon settlement known as Haun’s Mill, primarily in retribution for the Mormon gutting of Daviess County.</p>
<p>&#8230;</p>
<p>Amanda [Barnes Smith]’s two little boys, Sardius and Alma had followed their father into the blacksmith shop.  The men had hoped to use the shop like a fortress in the event of an attack.  Instead, it quickly proved to be a death trap.  Seeing no other alternative, the men made a desperate dash for the woods, nearly all of them being gunned down in the process.  Many of the attackers looted, humiliated, and brutalized the wounded and dying.  The oldest victim was 62 year old Thomas McBride who after surrendering his weapon was hacked to death with a corn knife.  And the youngest was 10 year old Sardius Smith.  An enraged Missourian leveled his gun against the small boy’s head, and after proclaiming that ‘nits become lice” pulled the trigger.</p>
<p>Amanda found her husband and 10 year old son Sardius dead, and her 6 year old son’s hip was “all shot to pieces.”Apostle Andrew Bolton of the Community of Christ said,</p>
<p>“Hauns Mill was a tragedy:  17 boys and men are killed and another one dies later from his wounds.  Hauns Mill was a peaceful settlement of Mormons: 15 miles from the main group in Far West, but therefore isolated and vulnerable in the sectarian war that was erupting around them.  Two days before the massacre they reiterated their commitment to live in peace with their neighbors.  This was a genuine, authentic group that didn’t want any part of the violence and suffered horrible tragedy.  The lesson from Haun’s Mill is the innocent get hurt whenever there is human violence.  It spills over, and there is tragedy.</p></blockquote>
<p>So how does such a tragedy happen?  Why do neighbors turn so quickly on each other?  In my previous post, <a href="http://www.mormonheretic.org/2010/06/27/a-horrific-tale-of-forgiveness/">I discussed the Rwandan Genocide</a>.  Armand Mauss describes the &#8220;Moral Panic&#8221; in Ballentine&#8217;s film.  He is professor emeritus of Sociology and Religious Studies at <a title="Washington State University" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washington_State_University">Washington State University</a>.  He retired in 1999, but continues to be active on Mormon studies.  He is probably most famous for his book <a href="http://books.google.com/books?id=wTBUCGwdG8MC&amp;lpg=PP1&amp;pg=PP1#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false">The Angel and the Beehive</a>.  The Moral Panic explains how groups turn so quickly violent.</p>
<blockquote><p>When a society is gripped by a moral panic, that society is apt to respond as though their facing matters of life and death.  That leads to violence that is considered justifiable in almost any extreme, because of what we see is at stake.  It makes it possible for people who yesterday felt very friendly toward another people, suddenly see those people not only as enemies, but as less than human.”</p>
<p>…</p>
<p>All of the restraints that people normally feel about the way human beings should treat human beings, those restraints gradually melt away, and people who are perfectly nice, decent people, find themselves doing things that they would have never thought that they could do….Under other circumstances a group of Mormons and a group of Missourians might have gone to dinner together and had a good time, but under these circumstances, they faced the Moral Panic.”</p></blockquote>
<p>It is truly astonishing how quickly neighbor can turn against neighbor.  It is truly a tragedy when cooler heads do not prevail.</p>

<li><span style="text-decoration: underline;">To the Summit</span> by Jon Schmidt.  I know Jon Schmidt is sort of Mormon-ish music, but his music is really insipiring.</li>
<li><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Don&#8217;t Stop Believing</span> by Journey.</li>
<li><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Dust in the Wind</span> by Kansas.  Humility is a virtue!</li>
<li><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Stairway to Heaven</span> by Led Zeppelin.  DUH!</li>
<li><span style="text-decoration: underline;">What a Wonderful World</span> by Louis Armstrong.  Indeed!</li>

<li><span style="text-decoration: underline;">You Get What You Give</span> by New Radicals.  Stupid band, but has one song with a great message.</li>
<li><span style="text-decoration: underline;">This Too Shall Pass</span> by OK Go.  New song by a great group.</li>
<li>The entire musical score from Les Miserables.  Music from one of the best musicals ever produced from one of the most influential philosophical and sociological novels ever written.</li>
<li><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Don&#8217;t Think Twice, It&#8217;s All Right</span> by Peter, Paul And Mary (obviously a remake of Bob Dylan&#8217;s classic).  Still brilliant.</li>
<li><span style="text-decoration: underline;">If I Had a Hammer</span> by Peter, Paul And Mary (also a remake).  A bit hippy, but was THE anthem for the civil rights movement.</li>
<li><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Take the Power Back</span> by Rage Against The Machine.  RATM is a bit over-the-top for me sometimes, but their lyrics send clear messages of pushing back against the &#8220;system&#8221; which I think we all need to do sometimes.</li>
<li><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Life is a Highway</span> by Rascall Flatts (cover of Tom Cochrane&#8217;s hit, but RF does it so much better).  Great message, uplifting.</li>
<li><span style="text-decoration: underline;">You Can&#8217;t Always Get What You Want</span> by The Rolling Stones.  This is the theme song at my house whenever my kids start whining!</li>
<li><span style="text-decoration: underline;">The Sounds of Silence</span> by Simon &amp; Garfunkel.</li>
<li><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Joy To The World</span> by Three Dog Night.  Uplifting, fun, done by a great band.</li>
<li>Pretty much all of U2&#8242;s albums.  Seriously, how does one pick a favorite U2 song?  It&#8217;s like trying to pick a favorite child!</li>

		<description><![CDATA[If you&#8217;re Mormon, you&#8217;ve probably heard the myth that Alice Cooper was a Mormon.  Most of you have probably dismissed the myth as complete hogwash.  Well, it turns out there is an element of truth to the myth.  For example, his father&#8217;s middle name is Moroni and his grandfather was an apostle!  Yes it is true! Alice Cooper was born with the name Vincent Damon Furnier in Detroit, Michigan.  His  father was a preacher by the name of Ether Moroni Furnier for The Church of Jesus Christ, based in Monongahela, Pennsylvania.  Cooper&#8217;s grandfather Thurman Sylvester Furnier served as an apostle for the church.  The church is also known as the Bickertonite church, and has roots with Sidney Rigdon.  According to Cooper&#8217;s biography, he was active in the church until the age of 11 or 12.  His family moved to Phoenix, Arizona when he was about 16 years old. <p><img title="More..." src="http://www.mormonheretic.org/wp-includes/js/tinymce/plugins/wordpress/img/trans.gif" alt="" />Alice Cooper was born with the name Vincent Damon Furnier in Detroit, Michigan.  His  father was a preacher by the name of Ether Moroni Furnier for <a href="http://www.thechurchofjesuschrist.com/" target="_blank">The Church of Jesus Christ</a><span id="more-12143"></span>, based in Monongahela, Pennsylvania.  Cooper&#8217;s grandfather Thurman Sylvester Furnier served as an apostle for the church.  The church is also known as the Bickertonite church, and has roots with Sidney Rigdon.  According to Cooper&#8217;s biography, he was active in the church until the age of 11 or 12.  His family moved to Phoenix, Arizona when he was about 16 years old.</p>
<p>So, I thought it might be nice to give some information about his church.  As you may remember, just prior to Joseph Smith&#8217;s death, he was running for President of the United States.  His Vice Presidential candidate was Sidney Rigdon.  The US Constitution prohibits the President and Vice President from residing in the same state, so Joseph sent Sidney on a mission to his home state of Pennsylvania to establish residency.  Rigdon settled near Pittsburgh (the place of his birth) when he received the news of Joseph&#8217;s death.  Rigdon was there just a few weeks.</p>
<p>Rigdon returned to Nauvoo with the rest of the apostles.  There was a special meeting on August 8, 1844.  According to Richard Van Wagonner, <a href="http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1663717.Sidney_Rigdon">Sidney Rigdon&#8217;s biographer</a>, on page 338, Van Wagoner documents Rigdon telling Jedidiah  Grant</p>
<blockquote><p>‘that he felt prepared to claim “the Prophetic mantle” and that he would “now take his place at the head of the church, in spite of men or devils, at the risk of his life.’  Rigdon seems to have underestimated Brigham Young, who had succession ideas as well.</p>
<p>&#8230;From page 339,</p>
<blockquote><p>Hyde reported that Rigdon was just “about to ask for an expression of the people by vote; when lo! to his grief and mortification, [Brigham Young] stepped upon the stand… and with a word stayed all the proceedings of Mr. Rigdon.  Young, who later recalled the event in 1860, stated:  “[W]hen I went to meet Sidney  Rigdon on the ground I went alone, and was ready along to face and drive the dogs from the flock.”</p></blockquote>

<p>Anyway, most of you know that Rigdon and Young excommunicated each other.  Rigdon went back to Pittsburgh and started his own church.  In the appendix is a reference to the Bickertonites on page 473.</p>
<blockquote><p>Sidney’s Rigdon’s Church of Jesus Christ of the Children of Zion disintegrated within a decade after his death.  &#8230;  But the Church of Jesus Christ, a small sect organized in 1862 by William Bickerton, still venerates Rigdon.</p>
<p>Bickerton, an 1845 convert to Sidney Rigdon’s Church of Christ, found himself adrift after Rigdon’s failures in Pittsburgh and the Cumberland Valley.  For a brief period in the early 1850s Bickerton affiliated with a branch of the Utah Mormons at West Elizabeth, Pennsylvania, although he personally declared that “his testimony… is that the blessing he received came thru obedience to the restored Gospel in 1845 with Rigdon’s people.”</p>
<p>After the Utah church publicly announced its long-term practice of polygamy in 1852, Bickerton left that organization.  In 1854 he held a successful conference in West Elizabeth at which several persons were baptized.  By 1858 he had attained a following of nearly 100 persons and had organized them into branches in Wheeling, West Virginia; Pine Run, Allegheny; and Greenock, Pennsylvania.</p>
<p>In an 1859 conference Bickerton was acknowledged as a prophet by his followers.  Two years later he was sustained a “Prophet and President of the Church” with counselors Charles Brown and Beorge Barnes.  During a July 1862 conference at Greenock twelve apostles and a number of evangelists were ordained.  The church was officially organized during this conference although not legally incorporated until 10 June 1865.</p>
<p>The church, which maintains its world headquarters today in Monongahela, Pennsylvania, at last report numbered 10,000 members.  The current First Presidency is Dominic Thomas, Paul Palmieri, and Robert Watson.  The church is organized into seven districts in the U.S., and has missions in Canada, Mexico, Guatemala, Kenya, Nigeria, India, England, Italy, Holland, and Germany.</p></blockquote>
<p>The Bickertonite Church is the 3rd largest Mormon sect, behind the LDS Church and RLDS Church (known now as the Community of Christ.)  Alice Cooper&#8217;s grandfather was an apostle of this church.  I think it&#8217;s pretty safe to say that Cooper was raised with a pretty firm knowledge of the Book of Mormon.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve heard Cooper attends a Methodist Church, and an Assembly of God Church.  I don&#8217;t know if either of these rumors are true.  He has been interviewed and said,</p>
<blockquote><p>Cooper has confirmed in interviews that he is in fact a born again Christian.  [World Net Daily article in which Cooper speaks of his wish to shun so called celebrity Christianity] He has avoided so called “celebrity Christianity” because, as Cooper states himself: “It’s really easy to focus on Alice Cooper and not on Christ. I’m a rock singer. I’m nothing more than that. I’m not a philosopher. I consider myself low on the totem pole of knowledgeable Christians.[Interview with Radio Talk Show HostDrew Marshall] So, don’t look for answers from me”.[Cooper speaking in a a World Net Daily article]</p></blockquote>
<blockquote><p>When asked by the British Sunday Times newspaper in 2001 how a rebellious shock-rocker could be a Christian, Cooper is credited with providing this response “Drinking beer is easy. Trashing your hotel room is easy. But being a Christian, that’s a tough call. That’s real rebellion!”[Cooper's response to The Sunday Times is quoted in an online Good News magazine article dealing with well known rock musicians who have a Christian faith]</p></blockquote>
<p>So, what do you make of the Bickertonite&#8217;s most famous member?  I don&#8217;t believe Bickertonites like to call themselves &#8220;Mormons&#8221;, but they firmly believe in the Book of Mormon, so I think the label could apply in this case.  So no, Alice Cooper is not technically a Mormon, but I bet the rumors hold a bit more truth than you ever believed.  Am I right?</p>

<p>I think the church has been trying to change its image for a while (and some of our friends in the Bloggernacle have discussed whether <a href="http://bycommonconsent.com/2010/07/13/nice-to-see-it-published-but-how-does-it-affect-growth/">outside coverage on shifting Mormon perceptions is changing the average person&#8217;s viewpoint</a>), but it&#8217;s had some misses. For example, it <a href="http://mormonmatters.org/2009/01/23/a-brand-new-year/">rang in 2009 with a new site for church youth</a> (which [fortunately] has been quietly scuttled away, as far as I can tell &#8212; but you can still check out the video <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?gl=GB&amp;feature=related&amp;hl=en-GB&amp;v=_fbblj8hbKM">here</a>), a site that oozed with pop and <a href="http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TotallyRadical">total radicality</a>.</p>
<p>But for the new Mormon.org&#8230;I could be wrong&#8230;but it seems that the years of research into design, psychology, and current awareness of Mormonism paid off. You can read a <a href="http://northtemple.com/2010/07/13/new-mormon-org">fascinating account of the development of the new site here.</a></p>
<p>Here are just a few of my favorite aspects of the site.</p>
<h3>Integration of Our People</h3>
<p>From the first page (and even the picture that I posted), you can see that the designers of the new Mormon.org wanted people to hear regular (even if particularly attractive, talented) members. But what particularly intrigued me was the Our People page itself, where anyone can search for member testimonies and profiles by ethnicity, continent, age, gender, or even <em>religious background</em>. One goal of the designers at North Temple&#8217;s was to improve the perceptions of Mormons &#8212; especially of the diversity of the church membership &#8212; and I certainly think that this site has been a good step here.</p>
<p>Even more, member perspectives are integrated elsewhere throughout the site. Take for example the FAQ. Each topic has, in addition to the official church response, responses from various members. I&#8217;m certain that there is a certain vetting process to make sure that everything is kosher, but even in some touchy questions, there are touching, if seemingly surprising answers. (One woman answers the question regarding the church&#8217;s position on homosexuality and gay marriage by pointing out that the church does not support same-sex marriage, but does support families. She notes this has allowed her to support her mother, who is a lesbian, and her partner.)</p>
<h3>Emphasis on Our Values</h3>
<p>As someone who doesn&#8217;t have a testimony of every aspect of the faith, I could still be on board with the presentation of church <em>values</em>. The new mormon.org presents these values in such a way that most people can easily find agreement, but it does not try to present these values in a completely sterile and neutral way. The site successfully incorporates LDS perspectives, scriptures, and quotations so that they are not overbearing, but in a way that a non-member of the site could see that the church does have vibrant positions.</p>
<p>For example, the page on LDS <a href="http://mormon.org/choice/">valuation of freedom of choice</a> conveys both the LDS position of official political neutrality <em>and</em> the LDS position of standing up for its valued moral positions. I understand that this interplay is often a raw point for some, but the site gracefully handles it.</p>
<h3>Employment of Colors</h3>
<p>Recently, another one of our brethren in the Bloggernacle listed the several <a href="http://timesandseasons.org/index.php/2010/07/the-v-words/">&#8220;V&#8221; words that he found to be integral</a> to true religion. His terms were an emotional onomatopoeia of life, love, and learning. Two words he used were <em>verdant</em> and <em>vibrant</em> &#8212; words that evoke a sense of richness to color.</p>
<p>This has not been lost or forgone with the new Mormon.org. I must admit that I am not a formal designer, and I am not a color psychologist, but as <em>someone who can see and feel</em>, I see vitality and hope from this very site. I can see some who might be skeptical &#8212; &#8220;it is just marketing; it is just pushing buttons.&#8221; But what about the fantastic art of the Renaissance? The heaven-reaching architecture? The divine melodies of the music?</p>
<p>I guess I&#8217;m not saying that this is the new masterpiece, but in the same way that effective design principles have always been used for emotional and spiritual direction and amplification, I feel like this site is a modern paradigm.</p>
<p>So, what do you think? Am I totally off the mark? Do you think that this will have any effect on nonmembers&#8217; perceptions?</p>

<p><strong>Middle-Way:</strong><br />
“Probably not the answers we’d all hoped for… but anything that can make me feel something besides contempt and disappointment is <a href="http://io9.com/comment/23492454/" target="_blank">just fine with me</a>.”</p></blockquote>
<p>While there are some interesting similarities in content between the show and the gospel—such as the fallen evil dude (the <a href="http://www.npr.org/blogs/news/2007/12/huckabee_to_romney_are_jesus_a.html" target="_blank">brother of Jesus</a>!) wanting a body—I am more interested in how the process of being a fan of the show and being a member of the church have been strangely similar to me. Think <em>how</em> rather than <em>what</em>. Here are the top three observations about being a fan of the show that came up over the last six years, as well as some honorable mentions:</p>
<p><span style="color: #008000"><strong>3. Varying but predictable reactions</strong></span></p>
<p>With every new season, many complained about the show <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jumping_the_shark" target="_blank">jumping the shark</a>. Plain crash on a deserted island? Cool! Underground hatch with a button that has to be pushed every 108 minutes? Um, what? Start traveling through time? Lost half the viewers. In each case, a significant amount of viewers predictably fell away, or became more disgruntled. Not just major changes caused these hard feelings though—general disillusionment, feelings of being lied to (not kidding, some people feel lied to), and cries of “it wasn’t what I thought it was” were guaranteed to happen. Some complained about giving up 120+ hours (READ: 2 years!) of their life for the show. Any of this sound familiar? On the other hand, there are viewers like me loved the show, enjoyed the changes, and generally found it immensely satisfying, while being aware of the flaws. Some people are inevitably going to be disappointed, disillusioned, or feel abused (really, one person compared it the finale to spousal abuse… <a href="http://shenpawarrior.wordpress.com/2010/01/03/richard-dawkins-religion-is-worse-than-sexual-abuse/" target="_blank">and I thought Richard Dawkins was crazy</a>).</p>
<p><span style="color: #008000"><strong>2. A lot of good, a little bad, a dash of ugly</strong></span></p>
<ul>
<li><em>The good:</em> amazing acting (<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Emerson" target="_blank">Michael Emerson</a> anyone?), great character development, intriguing mysteries, huge fan community, meaningful symbolism, and hilarious <a href="http://abc.go.com/shows/lost/podcasts" target="_blank">podcasts</a>. Not to mention an amazing locale with <a href="http://www.hummertourshawaii.com/" target="_blank">Hummer Tours</a>! (Yeah, I went on one.)</li>
<li><em>The bad:</em> Walt and Aaron are important! You really should be thinking a lot about them… no wait, no they’re not, please <a href="http://speeches.byu.edu/reader/reader.php?id=11017" target="_blank">forget everything we ever said</a>.</li>
<li><em>The ugly</em>: Jack gets a tattoo in Thailand from Bai Ling. <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nikki_and_Paulo" target="_blank">Nikki and Paulo</a>… well, actually I’m ashamed to admit I actually liked that episode… it had <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lando_Calrissian" target="_blank">Lando</a>!</li>
</ul>
<p>For each viewer the ratio of good/bad/ugly was probably different (just as it is in the church). For me, <a href="http://mormonmatters.org/2009/06/03/what-bothers-me-and-why-i-still-believe/" target="_blank">the good outweighs the bad</a>.</p>
<p><span style="color: #008000"><strong>1. Subjective experience vs. The Truth</strong></span></p>
<p>After the finale, myriad arguments ensued about the merits of the show. Amazing masterpiece? Horrible mockery of actual story telling? One of the best shows ever? Another <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alias_%28TV_series%29" target="_blank">J.J. Abrams “start with a bang and end with a whimper</a>”? I think the debate about whether or not the show is objectively good TV (essentially, “truth claims”) is not very useful. How do you measure and compare subjective experience? Maybe it comes down to the percentages of importance one places on subjective experience and the Truth. For me it’s about 70-30. I care a little less about objectivity than utility. Consider me a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Postpositivism" target="_blank">post-positivist</a> Lost fan (and church member!). <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_X-Files" target="_blank">The Truth Is Out There</a>, but it is experienced by individuals. I am more interested in the community, the characters, and the big themes of love and redemption, than finding out all the answers, having everything neat and tidy, and whether or not the show is “objectively” good. Debates over &#8220;fact&#8221; or &#8220;truth&#8221; or &#8220;reason&#8221; have, for the most part, led me nowhere in terms of improving life. To be sure, every once in a while I am encountered with a new view on something that modifies my views or is useful in some way, but I don’t think the “Truth” can really be found this way. Certainly not utility. If people enjoy Twilight or the Twilight Zone, Miley Cyrus or Bob Dylan, Lost or Lost in Space, I refer them to <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duke_Ellington" target="_blank">The Duke</a>: “If it sounds good, it IS good.” Follow your own heart and mind, not what some TBM/Atheist/Middle-way/DAMU says.</p>
<p><strong><span style="color: #008000">Honorable Mentions:</span></strong></p>
<p><em>Sharing the good news:</em> I often tried to convert my friends and family to the show, with moderate success. However, many fall away after some activity with the first few seasons&#8230; I&#8217;m now at peace with the fact that many people are just not going to watch it, and many aren&#8217;t going to like it.</p>
<p><em>We don&#8217;t have all the answers:</em> We weren&#8217;t given the answers to many of the questions. Some questions took years to answer. Tolerance of ambiguity reigns supreme. Research suggests that <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suspense" target="_blank">we remember things better when they are left incomplete</a>, so perhaps not having all the answers is not all bad.</p>

		<description><![CDATA[We spend a lot of time in the bloggernacle analyzing, critiquing, and otherwise discussing the church and its culture. I think there is value in this for those of us who need this type of engagement. However, Mormonism (like many other religions) is a topic that few are able to dispassionately discuss. Some of us lean toward criticism, others toward apologizing. I do not know how those in the b&#8217;nacle (those who actually read what I write) perceive me, but my posts are not exactly oozing with praise most of the time! But I want to give credit where credit is due. If you have not seen the church&#8217;s new Combating Pornography website, may I suggest you check it out. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>We spend a lot of time in the bloggernacle analyzing, critiquing, and otherwise discussing the church and its culture.  I think there is value in this for those of us who need this type of engagement.  However, Mormonism (like many other religions) is a topic that few are able to dispassionately discuss.  Some of us lean toward criticism, others toward apologizing.  I do not know how those in the b&#8217;nacle (those who actually read what I write) perceive me, but my posts are not exactly oozing with praise most of the time! <img src='http://mormonmatters.org/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif' alt=';-)' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>

<p>But I want to give credit where credit is due.  If you have not seen the church&#8217;s new <a href="http://combatingpornography.org">Combating Pornography</a> website, may I suggest you check it out.  It is not just for those struggling with the addiction of pornography (yes, I said addiction), but for spouses of those struggling, parents, leaders, etc.  I think everyone could glean some useful insight about an epidemic that has proved to invade nearly every life in one way or another.</p>
<p>In short, I think the site is brilliant, and I give much kudos to the church for the content and purpose.  I really think it&#8217;s great!  Here&#8217;s what I like about it:</p>
<ol>
<li> The star <a href="http://combatingpornography.org/cp/eng/individuals/overcome/article/understanding-the-addictive-nature-of-pornography">article</a> (IMHO) is a well researched, well documented, elaboration on the nature of pornography addiction, by a renowned expert in the field.  The second to last paragraph is my favorite:<br />
<blockquote><p>Why is it important to understand that compulsive pornography use is an actual addiction?  By recognizing this, we will treat it with the respect required to overcome an addiction. For instance, no spiritual leader would tell a member who confesses an alcohol addiction to pray and repent without recommending counseling and 12-step support in such programs as the Addiction Recovery Program with LDS Family Services and Alcoholics Anonymous. Similarly, with the proper perspective on sexual addiction, we should also recommend that those afflicted with pornography and other sexual addictions, in addition to proceeding through the steps of repentance, will also seek recovery with therapy and group support.</p></blockquote>
</li>
<li> The site references sources and scholarship about overcoming pornography.  While I am not a social worker, or clinical psychologist, I recognize the most commonly accepted patterns in treating addiction/depression.  See <a href="http://combatingpornography.org/cp/eng/individuals/recognize/article/a-road-map-for-recovery-leaving-pornography-addiction-and-discovering-life">here</a>,  and <a href="http://combatingpornography.org/cp/eng/individuals/overcome/article/the-road-back-abandoning-pornography">here</a> for great examples.</li>
<li> There is practical advice in Mormonism&#8217;s favorite form &#8211; a <a href="http://combatingpornography.org/cp/eng/individuals/overcome/article/avoiding-slip-ups">checklist</a>. <img src='http://mormonmatters.org/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif' alt=';-)' class='wp-smiley' /> </li>
<li> There is a good mix of emphasis on moral cleanliness, openness in discussing human sexuality, physical reality, and spiritual ideology.  When I read the articles I get the impression that we&#8217;re not in the business of simply condemning this as sin and parroting to people they &#8220;pray and read scriptures&#8221; more diligently.  We are acknowledging a deeper problem in human psychology/biology that warrants our most sincere efforts.</li>
<li> The church is sincerely dedicated to helping people with this problem.  There are conference talks (at least one every six months), there is a website, there are very inexpensive counselling and other professional services, there is a booklet and associated meetings for overcoming addiction, etc.</li>
</ol>
<p>I really do believe that the LDS church does a lot of great things in this world.  There are people who are hurt by the culture, there are social and cultural problems I wish were different, and there are issues in our theology that don&#8217;t work for me.  But for this very uncertain Mormon, I am truly grateful to be a part of an organization that does try, in many ways, to influence people for the better.</p>

<p>In the late hours of October 23, 2003, slowly getting drunk after being rejected by a girl, a Harvard undergraduate and computer programmer named Mark Zuckerberg was hit by a sudden cruel bout of inspiration. He was looking through a photographic directory (called a “facebook”) of his dormitory, and noted on his blog that some of the photos were so “horrendous,” that he was tempted “to put some of these faces next to pictures of farm animals and have people vote on which is more attractive.&#8221; Hours later, he had successfully created a website, abandoning the farm animals idea, but instead comparing Harvard students with each other using hacked photographs and information. Just a few hours later, and after 22,000 page views, Harvard officials had traced the source of the website and shut it down, citing privacy concerns. Now, with more than 1000 employees and over 400 million active users, according to Facebook Factsheet, Facebook.com carries underneath its stark blue banner a markedly different statement of purpose: “Facebook helps you connect and share with the people in your life.&#8221;<span id="more-10125"></span></p>
<p>Many have voiced concerns over the use of online social networking tools, such as Elder Bednar of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.  He has called online presences &#8220;digital distractions, diversions, and detours&#8221; that could lead to difficulties in marriage, or a decrease in eternal, meaningful friendships.  I can&#8217;t help but think that anyone who has a problem with Facebook merely doesn&#8217;t know enough about it.</p>
<p>If Facebook were a country, it would be the third-largest by population, just under China and India, and Facebook is now offered in 70 languages. Around 200 million users will log on to Facebook in any given day, and of these, 35 million will update their statuses. More than 3 billion photos are uploaded to Facebook each month. By October 2007, Time magazine’s Bill Tancer reported that, among 18- to 24-year-olds, social networking was the most-accessed type of web site on the Internet, outranking email, search engines, and pornography. In fact, Tancer quips that, statistically, it seems that when online social networking use goes up, pornography use goes down. What could appeal to young people more than the institutionalized voyeurism offered by online pornography? Perhaps Mark Zuckerberg said it best, quoted in Rolling Stone: “People are more voyeuristic than what I would have thought.&#8221;</p>
<p>But Facebook is not just a tool for prying into our friends’ lives. Facebook offers ingenious and simple solutions to many of the problems that plague our youth today. Previous to online social networking services, people had to make friends through personal, non-digital interaction. This was often painstaking, emotionally taxing, and slow. In order to learn another person’s interests and favorite activities, one had to have arduous conversations, feigning interest and engagement until the relevant information could be obtained. Human beings were needlessly confusing and multi-faceted. Facebook offers a better way. On each Facebook user’s page is an “Info” page. There, the user lists their personal characteristics, including interests and activities. Popular ones include “sports,” “music,” and “reading.” Mine says “songwriting.&#8221; I can easily go through my friends list and find other people interested in songwriting. Finding kindred spirits is easier and simpler thanks to Facebook.</p>
<p>Finding people with similar interests is one thing, discovering a person’s sexual orientation was even worse. It was socially demanding, and sometimes had to be done through roundabout means. This often led to embarrassment and offense. It required tip-toeing around the issue, carefully gauging a person’s affiliation through indirect personal queries. People went years without even declaring their orientation, deciding rather to personally cultivate and incubate those feelings for long periods of time. In the meantime, their casual acquaintances were left scratching their heads and wishing that the issue could be settled, so that judgment could no longer be withheld. However, on a person’s Facebook Info page, there is a section where he or she can publicly state whether they are interested in women, men, or both. Mine says “Interested in: women.&#8221;</p>
<p>Similarly, religious affiliation was once seen as a private dimension of one’s personality, and thus it was socially unacceptable to attain this information without grueling theological and philosophical discourse. It was not uncommon to have to hear a person’s entire life story and reasons for believing, in order to arrive at their religious affiliation. These traits were once very personal, carefully guarded, and sacred. Often, religion was left out of discussions altogether, for fear that one might be invited to a church service, Bar Mitzvah, or mosque, or that a controversial issue might be ignited in conversation. With Facebook, the process is streamlined, and the risk of controversial discourse is eliminated. Just check their Info box. Mine says “Latter-day Saint.&#8221;</p>
<p>Thus, important evaluations about a person’s character can be made with the click of your mouse. No longer must a person withhold appraisal until a clearer picture of their friend is obtained. It is now easier than ever to avoid the people you disagree with, and reduce complex social interactions.</p>
<p>In the past, people often found themselves longing for information about long-lost friends. Conversations about the past included references to characteristics and traits of their old friends, questions as to their whereabouts, and wishing that one could talk to them again, punctuated with sighing ruminations on how time flies. With online social networking, one can easily find out what these people had for breakfast this morning (and every morning). Each Facebook user has a white box on their front page that reads, “What’s on your mind?” One may type in their current whereabouts, opinion on the weather, or recent activities in what is called a “status update.” Below this box are the status updates of many of one’s closest friends. Some examples on my front page from my friends include, “meh,” “Babysitin [sic] my little nephews <img src='http://mormonmatters.org/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':)' class='wp-smiley' /> ,” “irritated…..,” and “oh life!!!” My own status says, “Does anyone want to come with my Arabic class to eat Mediterranean tonight?”</p>
<p>You might notice that these status updates seem simplistic and reductionist. This is by design. Many social interactions that existed previous to Facebook were seeped in over-stimulating meaning. Much time and effort were wasted by young people trying to understand and connect with each other. Young people’s hearts and minds caught fire as they participated in these exchanges. Should we really be over-stimulating our young people? Facebook offers a superior form of interaction through its “poke” function. Poke is a harmless, meaningless, effortless interaction, which undoubtedly leads to little misunderstanding, anger, friendship, or violence amongst our youth. On a person’s page, there is an option to poke them. Poke serves no function; Facebook merely informs that person that they have been poked. They then have the option to poke back.</p>
<p>Therefore, conflict is avoided through personal detachment. And when conflict cannot be avoided, it requires relatively little effort. Consider the following. In previous social interactions, confronting someone with a personal conflict or problem was a difficult task requiring great courage. One had to organize thoughts, plan a confrontation, and meet face-to-face with the object of their problem in order to work out a resolution. With online social networking, sending an angry email requires only the click of a button, and no face-to-face dialogue. People no longer need long nights of sleep to temper their emotions; one can now easily send a confrontational diatribe at 3 a.m., before rationality and a night’s sleep dull one’s emotions. And what if one receives an email like this from a friend? They are easily unfriended, or, in other words, removed from one’s friends list.</p>
<p>You see, before online social networking, “friend” was a poorly-defined term. Making friends required gaining the trust of others, sincerity and earnestness in one’s interactions, and perhaps several months of kindness before the title “friend” could be conferred upon another. Online social networking offers an instantaneous, digital, text-based solution to problem of friendship: redefinition and demarcation. Friends can be added through mutual interests, close proximity of location, or other friends. One could easily add or unfriend everyone from his or her high school. For instance, take Paul, the bassist from my last band, and friend-of-a-friend. Is Paul my friend, or isn’t he? It’s easy to tell: about four months ago he unfriended me.</p>
<p>This might have offended me, but I have 614 other friends. I can easily compare my prestige and popularity to other people on my friends list by contrasting the number of friends I have to the number of friends they have. Facebook’s statistics page says that the average person has 130 friends. Boy, am I glad I’m not that guy. However, embarrassingly, my wife has a significantly greater number than me: 943.</p>
<p>One might think that Facebook enhances friendships, relationships, and acquaintances. I would go one step further. Facebook replaces them with something even better: simple, streamlined friendship units. We are all now units on an interacting yet efficient grid. According to Facebook’s statistics page, the average unit spends almost an hour a day on Facebook. In this time, units read information on their friends’ walls, look through their activities, interests, and pictures, play games, join groups with others that have similar interests, and post links to other web pages. Units often check their Facebook pages several times during the day, and Facebook is now even offered on iPhones and other hand-held wireless devices, giving units the ability to check their Facebook pages everywhere they go, all day long, whether they are at church, class, or a friend’s wedding. There are more than 100 million mobile Facebook units, and according to Facebook Factsheet, they are statistically 50% more active on Facebook than non-mobile units. Perhaps one day, all people will carry Facebook with them, thus inextricably bonding us with our new virtual identities.</p>
<p>It should be plain now how Facebook transcended its cruel and dehumanizing beginnings in Mark Zuckerberg’s dorm room, and grew to be the most popular online social networking service.  Elder Bednar is simply blind to the New Truth: Facebook is defining us, shaping us, and reducing us. May our now archaic system of human-to-human non-electronic social interactions stay where it belongs: the Stone Age.</p>

<p>The second largest denomination of the Restoration, the Community of Christ, had embedded their ministry more deeply in the Haitian education system as a long term strategy for Christian ministry in that part of the world. CofChrist has increasingly tended over the last half-century to emphasize Zion-building, as seen through focusing on peace and justice issues in the present, over discussions of personal salvation. As a result, the work of the CofChrist in Haiti has been hard hit by the earthquake.</p>
<p>This approach has not been limited to the Community of Christ, and so a number of humanitarian ministries are looking beyond the immediate crisis and wondering about long term prospects for the country. As a front page <em>Washington Post</em> story by William Booth and Scott Wilson put it on January 23:</p>
<p><strong>Schools&#8217; Collapse Leaves Haiti&#8217;s Future in Rubble</strong></p>
<p><em>The earthquake has crushed what many deem the only path to a better life in the impoverished country.</em></p>
<p>Of the many things taken from this city [Port-au-Prince] by the earthquake, few are as threatening to Haiti&#8217;s future as the near destruction of a school system viewed across society here as the only path to a better life.</p>
<p>Education is as precious as water in Haiti. The ruined capital was filled with parochial and secular schools built on the strict French model, many affordable even to the poorest parents, who struggled to pay a few dollars a week in tuition&#8230;</p>
<p>Now there are no schools. Education officials here estimate that the quake erased thousands of campuses, and at least 75% of those in the capital lie in ruins&#8230; Nearly every block has one, with many meeting in multiple sessions into the evening. &#8230;the debris-filled sites where they once stood are the places that smell the strongest of death. They were filled with children.</p>
<p>Information from the CofChrist is probably typical for other religious ministries in Haiti. The denomination primarily worked through a charity, <a href="http://www.outreach-international.org/our-work/where-we-work/">Outreach International</a> , created by church members several decades ago that had been able to build and maintain &#8212; even through years of political instability in the country &#8212; a network of ninety schools enrolling 9000 students. (That number is not impressive until you realize that the Community of Christ has only about 140,000 known, baptized members in the entire US and Canada.)</p>
<p>On January 19, Outreach International reported, almost defiantly:</p>
<p>Outreach International&#8217;s Haiti school children, staff and facilities are so severely impacted with loss of life and destroyed buildings that the organization cannot come close to accounting for extent of loss.</p>
<p>Matthew Naylor, Outreach International President, received an email today from Michel Rosier, Outreach International schools network director stating, &#8220;It is difficult and even painful to give you a detailed report on the Haitian situation. I thank you so much for your extreme concern for the Haitian people.&#8221;</p>
<p>With a teacher staff of 300+, Rosier and another staff member, Augustin Derat, executive director for the schools programs, are the only two staff accounted for. Both of them, along with their families, are living on the streets.</p>
<p>Early reports indicate that 7 of 12 schools which have been inspected are destroyed and the rest seriously damaged. There are at least 20 schools in the affected area. Rescue efforts at one school have saved 7 students from the rubble. Rosier states, nothing can be done for the others trapped.</p>
<p>With the Outreach International schools network so badly damaged, initial support for relief efforts has been made through Doctors Without Borders (MSF) located in Port-au-Prince, who will supply the type of immediate relief requested by our staff members on the ground.</p>
<p>Naylor promises, Outreach International will continue to invest in the long-term development in Haiti. We pledge to remain with the surviving children, families, and staff in order to put their lives back together. <strong>We will stay for as long as it takes.</strong> This is where the bulk of our resources will go.</p>
<p>I am sure that reader&#8217;s here have already made initial decisions about how much and in what ways they wish to help Haiti. However, I&#8217;d like to pose some more strategic questions that will still be relevant as the emergency evolves further:</p>
<p>How should our churches (and our peoples) give relative priority to our notions of the evangelistic and Zion-building enterprises?</p>
<p>Does the elevation of &#8220;care of the poor and needy&#8221; within the LDS &#8220;purposes&#8221; change their personal response in how they give time and money? Does the setback to the school programs in Haiti change how Community of Christ members allocate their giving?</p>
<p>How should the churches allocate the proportion of their support among their own people and ministries and among the general population affected by the crisis?</p>
<p>Is the best strategy for each church to focus massive resources on emergencies as they happen, wherever they happen (knowing that they will need to move on to some other emergency after a year or so, unfortunately)? Or is it better to build long term programs that, also unfortunately, may have to be built again and again?</p>
<p>How do the churches best coordinate with other religious and humanitarian agencies in ways that are faithful to the two denominations&#8217; separate understandings of the meaning of the Restoration?</p>
<p>How do we integrate our sense of the Spirit calling us personally with the task of our churches and other ministries?</p>

<p>A close friend of mine who wishes to remain anonymous recently saw in the shadow of the temple his story follows</p>

<p>Lavery and DeMillia, who are not&#8211;and never have been&#8211;LDS, originally planned to make a movie about people who had left the religion of their youth. They attended a meeting of the Portland Humanist Society, explained their project, and asked if anyone had such stories they would be willing to share. <p>They did hundreds of hours of interviews over two years and edited it down to a 55 minute film. The film is very moving&#8211;a tribute to those who shared their stories as well as DeMillia and Lavery&#8217;s videography and editing skills.</p>
<p>About two dozen people appear in interviews in the film. Each story is unique, but a common thread runs throughout them all. All faced a similar rejection by family, friends and community.  Some of those interviewed have left the church. Others no longer believe, but remain active because of family or community pressure. The latter are filmed in shadows, to obscure their identity. The film refers to these people as “Shadow Mormons.” They define &#8220;Shadow Mormons&#8221; as those who privately do not accept the exacting doctrine of the Church, but publicly profess to be true believers. They are in shadow to protect their relationships with family, friends and employers.</p>
<p>Someone commented to me after the film, “That&#8217;s you. You&#8217;re a Shadow Mormon.”</p>
<p>Yes, I&#8217;m a Shadow Mormon. Maybe that&#8217;s why this film hit me so hard. I haven&#8217;t believed in over 20 years – most of my adult life. Yet, during that time I&#8217;ve paid my tithing, gone to the temple, served in bishoprics and high councils and done all the things that were expected of me. Why? Because I am tied to the church by family and community.</p>
<p>The story of &#8220;Grace&#8221; (not her real name) resonated with me because it was so similar to mine. Her pain, and anger, were born of all the energy she has given to a religion that she doesn&#8217;t believe in. Finding out that the Church was not true was like a death experience for her. Like me, she tried following the Church&#8217;s teachings to fast, pray, read the scriptures and yet never felt she received the &#8220;burning in her bosom&#8221; that is promised in the scriptures.</p>
<p>What of the families and communities of these people? What are their stories, their experiences with loved ones who go through a process of losing belief and leaving the church. Only one person who was a family or friend agreed to be interviewed for the film. The believing husband that was interviewed told how he still loved his wife, even though she has left the church. What about the others? Are they embarrassed to say that the Church was more important than their relationship with the person who left?</p>
<p>The saddest stories, to me, were of divorce caused by one spouse believing and the other not believing. Michelle (another woman interviewed in the film) said her heart was broken that her husband would choose the Church over her. He told their marriage therapist that if she had not been Mormon he never would have married her. &#8220;There was more to me than being a Mormon,&#8221; she said.  &#8220;And I thought that there was more to him.&#8221;</p>
<p>The dictionary defines empathy as “the intellectual identification with or vicarious experiencing of the feelings, thoughts, or attitudes of another.” We could all use a little more empathy for those around us. I have had several people tell me, “I can&#8217;t imagine how a person could leave the church.” Either they need a better imagination or they need more empathy.  Maybe they just need to see this film.</p>
<p>One of the questions at the screening&#8211;one that Lavery could not answer&#8211;was, “How do we get the right people to see this film?” Sadly, many members of the church would not even consider it. (It screened in Salt Lake City in October and got almost no media coverage.) The film does not try to de-convert anyone or disparage the doctrine of the church. It doesn&#8217;t assert that someone is right because he or she believes, or that someone else is right because he or she leaves the church. This film is about accepting people regardless of what they believe, and about how we treat those who believe differently than we do. I wish every member of the church could see this film.</p>

		<description><![CDATA[Recently I drove up Little Cottonwood Canyon with my brother and nephew.  This is the canyon in which many of your ancestors pulled out  the granite for the construction of the salt lake temple. As soon as we passed the granite facings on the side of the canyon my nephew played a song on his iPod by Corb Lund Brother Brigham Brother Young and it brought mental flashes into my mind of men working on the side of the mountain blasting granite out of it.    It made me think of the struggles that men and women had even back then with the faith in many ways very similar to our day. From what I have read Mr Lund isn&#8217;t LDS but has relatives that are. Im assuming one of his relatives is a historian buff? <p>Michael Smith is a former all-American 6&#8242; 10&#8243; forward from BYU.  He served a mission from 1984-1986.  He was a drafted in the First Round (13th overall) by the Boston Celtics, where he played 2 years.  He played 1 year for the LA Clippers before jumping into the broadcast booth.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m sorry, but I don&#8217;t think this conversation deserved more than a verbal warning.  Suspension?  Give me a break!</p>

I recently learned that the University of Utah was designated as &#8220;the School of the Prophets&#8221; by Brigham Young, according to a Deseret News article from Dec 2, 1867.  Back in July, the University of Utah football team signed a player out of California by the name of Joseph Smith.  I joked that with his signing, and President Hinckley and President Monson&#8217;s status as alums of the U, that it was the &#8220;School of the Prophets.&#8221;  (Joseph Smith had originally set up a School of the Prophets to teach the LDS leadership back in the Nauvoo days.)  Well, it turns out that it&#8217;s no joke, and comes straight from the mouth of none other than Brigham Young! <p>I just finished <a href="http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/118126.Forgotten_Kingdom_The_Mormon_Theocracy_in_the_American_West_1847_1896">Forgotten Kingdom</a>, and I want to quote from page 261.</p>

<p>To implement a unified move in this direction, Brigham Young on December 2, 1867, resurrected an organization from an earlier period of his church&#8217;s history.  He announced that day before an assembly of Mormon leaders that the University of Deseret, parent of the University of Utah, would be reorganized and &#8220;hence, it may properly be called the &#8216;School of the Prophets.&#8217;&#8221; [Deseret News, December 2, 1867.  While Young considered School of the Prophets to be the proper name and role of the University of Deseret, the institution's existing name remained the same.  In 1872 the larger School of the Prophets was dissolved due to a lack of attendance and the inability of many to keep its affairs secret.]  Since it was founded in 1850, the university had seen few students but served primarily to publish and distribute the Deseret Alphabet.</p></blockquote>

I was wondering who your heroes are these days? We glorify celebrity and sports figures, who make millions of dollars with little or no contribution to society other than to provide fodder for the tabloids.  Some look up to business leaders but they sometimes turn out to be giant frauds, like Bernard Madoff who rip off people and tend to put themselves first instead of their companies and employees. We have religious leaders who exemplify righteous principles, but we&#8217;ve seen just as many of those have issues as well with moral problems, money problems, abuse of power, etc. We can also look up to characters from the scriptures, but many believe those weren&#8217;t even real people. Many of us had excellent parents and view them as our heroes and examples for our lives, but there are also many who suffered at the hands of their parents. <p>First, &#8220;lust&#8221; is used in this passage as a verb &#8211; so, in this verse&#8221;to lust&#8221; appears to mean:</p>
<blockquote><p>to express or feel uncontrolled or illicit sexual desire or appetite; to have have an excessive craving for</p></blockquote>
<p>Conversely, the definition for &#8220;chaste&#8221; that opposes this construct best is:</p>
<blockquote><p>Pure in thought and act; innocent; free from lewdness and obscenity, or indecency in act or speech; modest (as, a chaste mind; chaste eyes).</p></blockquote>
<p>The interesting association in this definition is the use of the word &#8220;modest&#8221; &#8211; which in context is defined as: &#8220;limited or moderate in amount, extent, etc.&#8221; In other words, taking both of these definitions in the context of the admonition in Matthew, the underlying characteristic that Jesus appears to be addressing is &#8220;moderation&#8221; or &#8220;control&#8221; &#8211; being able to see and appreciate physical beauty without going to any extreme, without including &#8220;lewdness, obscenity, indecency, lust, etc.&#8221; This is a much more comprehensive and fundamentally empowering / liberating view of &#8220;chastity&#8221; than a simple abstinence from proscribed activities &#8211; which manifests itself generally as a negative and constricting principle. Also, <span style="font-weight: bold;">and this is critical</span>, the definition highlights being &#8220;chaste&#8221; as something primarily existing within the individual.</p>
<p>I am reminded of a story I heard once. I don&#8217;t know if it is historically accurate, but it illustrates this characteristic in a very simple and direct way. According to this story, a woman notorious for traveling in the nude (Lady Godiva, perhaps) was passing a group of religious leaders (the Pope and some Cardinals, perhaps). One of the Cardinals told everyone to cover their eyes and look away, but the Pope did not do so. The woman saw the reaction her passing had created, including the fact that the Pope did not look away &#8211; and she asked him why he did not do so. His response was something like:</p>
<blockquote><p>You are a daughter of God, and he has blessed you with great beauty. I appreciate that gift God has given and praise him for his gracious gift, so why would I look away?</p></blockquote>
<p>I believe it is important to remember that Adam and Eve covered their nakedness only after Satan pointed out that they were naked and that others would see it. I mention this simply to stress that the typical restrictions we employ as a part of this mortal existence are in place NOT because physicality and sexuality are bad things, but because we do not want to place undue temptation and stimulation in the path of others &#8211; we do not want them to &#8220;look upon a (wo)man to lust after her (him)&#8221; due to our actions.</p>
<p>However, if all were &#8220;chaste&#8221; in their thoughts and deeds, such restrictions would not be necessary. In other words, we seek &#8220;modesty&#8221; (moderation) in dress as an attempt to strike a proper balance between the ideal of chastity we desire and the practical state of lustfulness by which we are surrounded &#8211; between where we wish we were (as individuals and/or a society) and where we actually are.</p>
<p>True &#8220;chastity,&#8221; therefore, includes not only conforming to reasonable societal constraints intended to avoid placing temptation in the path of others but also having our hearts changed to not be tempted no matter our surroundings &#8211; <strong>to not &#8220;lust after her&#8221; even when &#8220;looking upon a woman&#8221; cannot be avoided.</strong></p>
<p>I don&#8217;t have a simple solution or suggestion for all &#8211; or even for any particular individual. I know it is neither the extreme conservatism of the Taliban in Afghanistan nor the extreme liberalism of South Beach, Florida &#8211; but I know that I must be able to walk in either world and be free of &#8220;lust&#8221; in order to fulfill the standard Jesus holds up in these verses.</p>
<p>In summary, my being chaste in thought and deed is <span style="font-weight: bold;">MY</span> responsibility. I can&#8217;t blame the environment around me &#8211; or those whose appearance &#8220;naturally&#8221; might tempt me &#8211; or claim the devil made me do it. I must change myself ultimately, even if I first must change my exposure and environment until I reach the point where they no longer matter. I shouldn&#8217;t dive into tempting situations recklessly, simply in order to test my control, but rather I can change my thoughts and actions until I can face such situations without temptation. If I never reach that ultimate objective, I must continue to structure my environment to reduce temptation, but eliminating all possible temptation can never be the default.</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;Whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p><strong>In this passage, the woman is <span style="font-weight: bold;">NOT</span> at fault for her beauty or her &#8220;seuxality&#8221; or anything else; the man is at fault for how he reacts.</strong> While I believe in modesty in dress, at the most fundamental level the one being viewed is not &#8220;guilty&#8221; of causing the viewer&#8217;s reaction.  There are cases where s/he certainly bears some responsibility when acting in reckless disregard to the sensibilities of others, but at the most basic level the primary responsibility (at the very least) rests with the one &#8220;looking&#8221; to not &#8220;lust&#8221;.</p>
<p>At its most fundamental level, I believe &#8220;chastity&#8221; is <span style="font-weight: bold;">NOT</span> a restriction imposed externally; it is a characteristic developed internally.</p>

<p>If you are reading this, you are someone who is now perhaps a minority in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints: an English-speaking member with access to the internet, probably living in America.  This means that you are able to read virtually everything that has ever been written about Mormonism.  And if you can&#8217;t find it online, chances are that your local library can get it.  If not, you can buy it on Amazon and have it shipped to your home without having to worry about crazy shipping costs or customs duties.</p>
<p>Over half of the Church&#8217;s membership now lives outside of the US.  Many of these members have little or no knowledge of the English language.  Their resources in terms of information regarding their own religion is scarce.  Often the only things they have in their own language are official materials put out by the Church: the scriptures (sometimes only an incomplete translation of the <em>Book of Mormon</em>, and perhaps no <em>Bible</em> <em>Dictionary</em> or <em>Topical Guide</em>), the RS/Priesthood manual, other auxiliary manuals, and maybe the <em>Liahona</em>.  No <em>Journal of Discourses</em>, no <em>Jesus the Christ.</em> Forget <em>Rough Stone Rolling</em> and don&#8217;t even think about Mormon blogging.</p>
<p>A bit over year ago, I barely knew what a blog was and the term &#8220;Bloggernacle&#8221; was a foreign word to me.  Back then, I still told my non-member friends who asked that the Church allowed polygamy to take care of all the spinsters and singles and the suggestion that Joseph Smith married women who were already married to other men would have just been anti-Mormon rubbish to me.  I wondered how my Baptist friend in high school who told me years ago that Joseph used a hat and stone to translate the Book of Mormon ever got wind of such a crazy idea which, of course, I denied. Never would I have believed that any Church leaders could have possibly been against black civil rights in the 60&#8242;s because they were all too &#8220;nice&#8221; or &#8220;enlightened&#8221; to have such backwards views.  Probably the only thing that would have surprised me more was that our &#8220;politically neutral&#8221; Church sent a letter to California wards telling members how to vote.  But of course, if I had known about the ERA then I wouldn&#8217;t have needed to be so surprised.  Yes, it&#8217;s been an action-filled year for me.</p>
<p>Sometimes when I sit in church on Sundays, I feel like I&#8217;m in a different world than that of my fellow branch members.  Although most of them have a good grasp of the English language, most of them are not at the level that they would be able to read Bushman or listen to Mormon podcasts.  They would know about as much about Prop 8 as you all know about ekteskapsloven and probably assume that The September Six were a rock band.  Tell them that Emma wasn&#8217;t Joseph&#8217;s only wife and some of them would surely deny it.  And I&#8217;m sure that they&#8217;re still telling <em>their</em> friends that polygamy was needed because of all the widows and singles.</p>
<p>When I think about it, I&#8217;m not sure who is better off: them or me?  Would <em>I</em> be better off if I could go back to the days when I had no clue about any of this stuff?  Or should <em>they </em>have the opportunity to know more about the history and current events of the Church that they claim is true?</p>
<p>Since the majority of Mormons in this world do not have access to and/or do not have the language skills to read anything other than the few official Church publications in their own language, are they at a disadvantage?  I certainly don&#8217;t expect the Church to start broadcasting news to its international membership or sponsor the translation of <em>Rough Stone Rolling</em> into 85 languages.  Perhaps the Church really can&#8217;t do anything more in the case of non-English speaking members.  But is it thriving as a result of their ignorance?  And if so, does it really matter?</p>
<p>So who is better off?  Them or us?  We&#8217;re always told that we should acquire as much knowledge as possible since it&#8217;s the only thing we will take with us from this life.  Is Church history an exception?</p>
<p>Who will be able to withstand the challenges that the Church faces in the future?  Will it be those who have a solid knowledge of the <em>real</em> Church history so that they have a chance to distinguish truth from rumour, or will it be those who stick to the official publications?</p>
<p>Does the history of Mormonism stand in jeopardy of being forgotten or altered as the non-English speaking membership of the Church abroad continues to grow and become a clear majority?</p>

They observe that most of us dry our clothes on the  line, drive much smaller cars, live in shoe box’s compared to the average size of an American home, walk to the shops, use long life low wattage low energy bulbs, changing windows over for double glazing, doubling up on insulation, are becoming more obsessive about recycling, drive low emission high mpg diesel cars, save left over food, food portions at restaurants smaller and public transport used far more often and readily available. It amazes some of the Brits when they go to Utah to see how big the houses are especially in many cases for so few people who live in them.  Huge Ford Explorers, steak dinners that could feed a typical family of four.  When they go for the first time they come back thinking that it’s a land of excess. <li class="MsoNormal">Many believe the second      coming will be coming soon (God the creator of this earth will be able to      clean up the planet in a second, our efforts are pointless.</li>

<li><strong>Role of churches</strong>.
<ul>
<li>Will there be a &#8220;church&#8221; during the millenium?  Why would there be?  Isn&#8217;t the church like the babysitter while the Savior&#8217;s away?  Remember, there wasn&#8217;t a church per se when He was on the earth.  He created a movement.  The disciples created a church to keep the movement going and provide support to new followers.  At the least, He could reduce the three-hour block.</li>
<li>Will there be various churches then?  Will some be non-Christian?</li>
<li>Will there be a mass conversion to one faith or at least Christianity?  Will there be apostates after that?</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li><strong>Culture</strong>.
<ul>
<li>What kind of shows would be on TV?  Would everyone be self-censoring?  Would there be less taking of the name of God in vain?</li>
<li>Would WWJD shirts &amp; caps be irrelevant or an even bigger seller now that we know the answer to the question?</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li><strong>Jesus as a Leader</strong>.  What kind of political leader would Jesus be?
<ul>
<li>A great communicator (if you have ears to hear anyway).</li>
<li>Your basic delegator.</li>
<li>He might host some amazing parties (His reputation as a wine-bibber), but none of the cool people will be invited (expect guys in tin foil hats and aging hookers based on His friends the first time around).</li>
<li>Would He do interviews with Larry King?  Stephen Colbert?</li>
</ul>
</li>
</ol>
<p>So, do you take this idea literally?  If so, what do you think it will be like?  Do you fall into the &#8220;it will be so different than things are now that we can&#8217;t fathom it&#8221; (because if so, I guess I would just say &#8220;people are people&#8221;)?  Discuss.</p>

<p><span style="Arial;">It is the Unitarian experience that these values form a more effective foundation for true community than insistence on uniformity of belief and doctrine. Unitarians affirm that truth and humanity are best served where both the mind and the conscience are free. They maintain that no one book, institution or individual has the monopoly on truth, no matter what they may claim for themselves or their devotees may claim for them. Unitarians affirm that: </span></p>

<li class="MsoNormal"><span style="Arial;">Every person&#8217;s life involves developing a value-system by which she      or he lives.</span></li>
