I have since been immersed in studying couples and relationships, and have been seeing couples in therapy part-time for about three years, primarily using <a href="http://www.iceeft.com/whatis.htm" target="_blank">Emotionally Focused Therapy</a> (EFT). It can be difficult, but is also a privilege to watch. I love being a part of helping couples find each other again. For this new “Date Night” series, I would like to write about what I have been studying or experiencing with couples.<span id="more-12072"></span></em></p>
<p>In January of this year I attended a conference where one of the speakers was Barry McCarthy, a professor at American University. He talked about couple sexuality, and described four common sexual &#8220;styles&#8221; that individuals and couples choose (or fall into). It sounds a little facebook quiz-ish, but it is helpful to recognize your style, partner’s, and the style you have together. Here are the <a href="http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/whats-your-sexual-style/200902/what-is-the-right-couple-sexual-style-you" target="_blank">four styles</a>:</p>
<p><strong>Complementary</strong><br />
This is the most common. McCarthy calls it a “mine and ours” style. Each person has their own sexual voice and preferences, and is responsible for their own experience. They combine this with also being responsible for the “intimate team.” Each partner can initiate sex or say no. They can switch off choosing different activities in bed. A big strength of this style is the role flexibility.</p>
<p><strong>Traditional</strong><br />
This is “predictable and stable.”  These couples do not like too much excitement, and prefer traditional roles – the man is usually in charge of initiating sex, while the woman is in charge emotional closeness. Sex may not be seen as important, and strong displays of emotion and eroticism may be discouraged. A strength of this style is having clear roles, which can help prevent sex from becoming a problem.</p>
<p><strong>Soul-Mate</strong><br />
These couples are &#8220;best-friends&#8221; but may not necessarily have the best sex life. They are open with their positive feelings, do everything together, and often think that the more close they are, the better the sex will be. This is not always the case though, as McCarthy says these partners often “de-eroticize each other.” When this style works well these couples feel a sense of acceptance and do not fear rejection. When it doesn’t work these couples lose erotic feelings for their partner, and worry about hurting feelings by talking about sexual concerns. These couples also have the most difficult time recovering from affairs.</p>
<p><strong>Emotionally Expressive</strong><br />
These couples enjoy a little conflict and drama. They share positive and negative feelings. This is the most erotic, unpredictable, and exciting style. They are open to sexual expression and exploration. Interestingly, McCarthy says that these are usually the only couples that can effectively use things like pornography, fantasies, toys, and etc, but that these must be used as a “bridge” to arousal, rather than as a way of “walling off’ one’s partner, which often happens.</p>
<p>In his <a href="http://books.google.com/books?id=B1SUrKQoOMUC&amp;pg=PA9&amp;lpg=PA9&amp;dq=couple+sexual+style&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=3ZaYhqTQHJ&amp;sig=telA8LJZFLzNJk2X9iOHKO2ncXY&amp;hl=en&amp;ei=ljY-TOyGEYH88Abeu4WPBw&amp;sa=X&amp;oi=book_result&amp;ct=result&amp;resnum=9&amp;ved=0CDoQ6AEwCA#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false" target="_blank">book</a>, McCarthy offers an assessment to help you determine your order of preference. While it helps to know your style and your partner’s, as well as construct a style together, a reviewer notes that the most helpful aspect of the book may be the focus on mutual enjoyment rather than on arousal and orgasm (Beuhler, 2010).</p>
<p>Some other comments from McCarthy’s speech</p>
<ul>
<li>80-85% of partners have sensitive or secret material they have never shared with their spouse (e.g. STIs, being sexually humiliated, shame about masturbation). In addition, about 10% of males (note-this *may* refer to 10% of males who already have a sexual problem, but I will check up on it to be sure) have a sexual secret that interferes with sex, which McCarthy called a “variant arousal pattern” (e.g. a fetish – which is NOT a preference, but is hard-wired into the brain with high degrees of secrecy, shame, and eroticism. These are usually on the Internet. These people may spend $500 to $2000 a month on fetish and other related sites.</li>
<li>When sex completely stops in a relationship, 90-95% of the time it is the <a href="http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/whats-your-sexual-style/200903/is-it-really-men-who-stop-couple-sexuality" target="_blank">male’s decision to stop</a>.</li>
<li>Partners who report having a good sexual relationship have the ability to veto sex. They do not say “if you loved me you would…&#8221;</li>
<li>Viagra doesn’t work because no one tells the couple how to integrate it into their sexual style.</li>
<li>Many sexual experiences are asynchronus. As long as these experiences are not coerced, there is not a problem. Many couples get trapped in the “tyranny of mutuality,&#8221; which means partners feel they always have to be on the same page sexually, or that sex always has to be equal for both partners. Sometimes sex IS more for one or the other. Sometimes it’s to release tension for one or the other. With the mutuality problem, some couples often fall into “let’s just cuddle.&#8221; They think that if it&#8217;s not working for one, it shouldn&#8217;t work for either.</li>
<li>The worst time to talk about sex is when you’re nude in bed after a bad sexual experience.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Questions for MM readers:</strong></p>
<ol>
<li>McCarthy says that 70% of couples experience a drop in sexual satisfaction when kids arrive. “What are we doing to be in the 30%?” John Gottman recommends a weekly date (at least 2 hours) and 4 “weekend getaways” (without the kids) a year. What daily, weekly, or yearly activities with your spouse have been good for your marriage?</li>
<li>Among happily married sexually active couples – 5-15% of their encounters are dissatisfying. These couples don’t apologize for it, and are able to laugh about it. For those who have relatively happy sexual relationships, how have you dealt with dissatisfying moments?</li>

<p>Here’s the situation:</p>

There’s always one more smoothie to grab, a car to wash, and errand to run. You end up never putting your garments back on until the end of the day. That doesn’t jive with what I learned at the temple, and I don’t see how you can have a recommend, <em>Elder</em>.”</p>
<p><em>Matt:</em> <em>[Laughing]</em> “Oh no! I better give up my recommend! Chillax. Really though, after I workout I don’t like changing again until I’ve taken a shower, and I need to stop sweating first. It’s not exactly cool here. If God’s okay with me taking off my garments to workout, I’m sure he won’t mind if I wash the car.”</p>
<p><em>Sarah:</em> “Heh, fine. I don’t think we’re ever going to agree on this, because I’m right and you’re stubborn. Why did I marry you again?&#8221; <em>[playfully smirking]</em></p>
<p><em>Matt:</em> “You’re hot!&#8221; <em>[Sarah roles her eyes]</em> &#8220;KIDDING!&#8221;</p>
<p><em>Sarah: </em><em>[Scoffs]</em> You&#8217;re digging yourself into a hole here buddy&#8230;&#8221;</p>
<p><em>Later on that day…</em></p>
<p><em>Matt:</em> “I just don’t know how I feel about our photos on the beach in Maui ending up on your facebook&#8211;which you spend WAY too much time doing, by the way. Anyway, do you really want the Elder’s Quorum President or some other ward member to see you in a bikini when they check facebook? I don’t even want to know what they’re thinking.”</p>
<p><em>Sarah:</em> “Okay, wow, so it’s my responsibility to control their thoughts? I have already had to adjust to the culture here&#8230; and what&#8217;s with the facebook dig, Mr. World of WarCraft? Anyway, that&#8217;s not the issue here. Americans are kind of ashamed of their bodies. They could use a little liberation. Gosh that sounds weird considering we live in Vegas.”</p>
<p><em>Matt:</em> “Exactly! Are we living the Lord’s standards or the world’s? Women shouldn’t wear immodest swimsuits. What kind of message are you sending to the Young Women?”</p>
<p><em>Sarah:</em> “So, YOU’RE the one who decides what is or is not modest? This is SUCH a cultural issue. In some places an ankle is immodest. And why is my belly button less modest than yours?”</p>
<p><em>Matt: </em>“Standards for what we wear is NOT a cultural issue.”</p>
<p><em>Sarah:</em> “We shouldn’t try to cram Utah Mormon Culture down the throats of all the other cultures of the world. People can still be faithful and have different cultures. Stop trying to force me to live according to your sexist standards… PLEASE tell me why my navel is more offensive than yours! You don&#8217;t have an argument, really.  YOU are also often breaking something that is very much indeed universal with not wearing your garments a lot of the time. Who cares about what other people are thinking about what we wear. What matters is what we think and what God thinks, and you’re in the wrong here.”</p></blockquote>
<p>Make the call! Who wins this argument?</p>

<p><em>I am LDS, married, and a stay at home mom of a 2  year old son. He&#8217;ll be 3 in October. My concern is about his increasing  interest in masturbation. <p><em><span id="more-11784"></span>He giggled a little as I was trying to wipe off his penis and  then asked me for a baby wipe, which I gave him and which he used to rub  his testicles; it actually seemed to help decrease the blood flow  to his penis, but I must admit I wasn&#8217;t sure what was happening  physically. After he was finished (this lasted about 30 seconds) he  handed me the wipe and I put a diaper back on and spent some time  holding him and reassuring him that everything was okay and then he  bounded off to play. My husband and I have what I consider to be very  healthy attitudes toward sexuality and use correct terminology with our  son and want him to grow up to love sex as much as we do, within the  bonds of a loving marital relationship. How can we help foster a healthy  attitude toward sex at this early age and what is an appropriate way to  handle toddler masturbation? My fear is that he will have negative  associations with sex when I prevent him from masturbating at this  stage, but I don&#8217;t feel that he should be allowed to masturbate either.</em></p>
<p><em>Incidentally, I have a friend (also LDS) who has a  daughter that is a year older than my son and  they are having the same problem, so I imagine that others are facing  this also. My friend constantly reminds her daughter to &#8220;not play with  her privates.&#8221; Is there a reason, other than the fact that it feels  good, that she has seemingly already developed an unbreakable habit? How  can this behavior be stopped before it becomes damaging? At what age is  it linked to sexuality in the child&#8217;s mind?</em></p>
<p>So many parents struggle with knowing what is &#8220;normal&#8221; versus  &#8220;alarming&#8221; behavior when it comes to their children&#8217;s sexuality. ALL children are born with sexual organs, sexual drives and sexual  curiosity.  That means that ALL parents are dealing with these issues.   For whatever reasons, we just don&#8217;t talk about it.  Making sure we  don&#8217;t look at our children through the lens of adult sexuality is  pivotal in dealing with our sexual parenting styles and ideas.  Here is  some direction:</p>
<ul>
<li>The first item of business is  how exactly are you defining masturbation?  The definition I like to  refer to from Merriam-Webster is: erotic stimulation especially of  one&#8217;s own genital organs commonly resulting in orgasm and achieved by  manual or other bodily contact exclusive of sexual intercourse, by  instrumental manipulations, occasionally by sexual fantasies, or by  various combinations of these agencies.  The fact that this  definition includes the word &#8220;erotic&#8221; pretty much disqualifies our  toddlers from falling under the category of being able to  masturbate.  I would encourage you to change your own perception of this  behavior and not call his natural exploration masturbation.</li>
<li>One  of my favorite gospel principles is the doctrine regarding the natural  and God-given innocence of children.  There is no capacity for sexual  sin or transgression for our children.  The age of accountability in our  church begins at age 8, which coincides with what the  psychological world also deems as an age (7-10) when children begin to better understand their behavior and the consequences that go  along with it.  However, at the ages of 5-10, even 11, our children do  not have the sexual maturity or capacity to enter the realm of &#8220;erotic.&#8221;   This is part of why we naturally struggle to educate our children  about sexuality to begin with.  Teachings regarding  abstaining from masturbation need to wait until the ages of 11,  12, 13 (when our children are ready to enter the next stage of young  men&#8217;s and young women&#8217;s). I have a great testimony in how our youth and  primary programs are organized.  The ages in which they move along to  new classes, deeper doctrine and new programs are inspired  and in adherance with correct developmental order.</li>
<li>You may  be surprised, with as strict as the church seems about the teachings  regarding masturbation, that the church actually agrees with me on this  point.  <a href="http://lds.org/ldsorg/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=7b2a5f74db46c010VgnVCM1000004d82620aRCRD&amp;locale=0&amp;sourceId=53537befabc20110VgnVCM100000176f620a____">&#8220;A Parent&#8217;s Guide</a>&#8221; has accurate and developmentally  appropriate guidance for parents as to when and how it is appropriate to  broach the many subjects related to sex education.  It specifically  states: &#8220;One of the first things (the  child) begins to discover is his body. Male and female children will  naturally discover and explore their genitals just as they do the rest  of their bodies. The male infant’s genitals are very sensitive to touch.  His penis responds to his diaper and to his parents’ touch as they  bathe or clothe him. He will often touch and rub his own genitals. A  little girl may also explore and handle her genitals. Your reaction to  these natural explorations will influence the way a child later feels  about his procreative powers. Do not either worry about or encourage the  child’s explorations. Remain neutral, and the child will accept that  these parts of his body are good, just as all the other parts are.&#8221;  The  fact your son found a wipe soothing makes perfect sense.  There is  a lot of blood  flow in the genital area and I&#8217;m sure it felt cool and  comfortable.  Erections for boys start at birth (even in the womb), are  not controllable and obviously draw their attention to their penis.   Both boys and girls, but girls in particular, use rubbing against  objects as another way to stimulate their genitals to satisfy what maybe  started as a natural itch and also just because it feels good.  None of  this is damaging.  It is perfectly appropriate for you to ignore this  behavior, not draw attention to it and not worry about it.  The only  guidance I would offer a child at this age is to redirect when in  public.</li>
<li>The  best way to foster healthy attitudes towards sex at an early age is the  positive and reinforced focus on his gender roles as a boy.  Celebrate  his &#8220;boyness&#8221;  and all of the strengths that go along with this (&#8220;You are such a smart  boy!&#8221;, &#8220;Look at you go!  What a fast boy!&#8221;).  Make reference often to  the same gender parent (i.e. &#8220;Look how strong you are, just like Daddy&#8221;  or &#8220;Your dancing is so graceful.  Mommy loves to dance too&#8221;).  The words &#8220;boy&#8221; and &#8220;girl&#8221; are interchangeable here depending on the gender of your child.</li>
<li>Another powerful way of fostering healthy sexual attitudes is to be  cognizant of the type of affection and marital role model you are  providing for your child.  Being comfortable kissing and being loving  with your spouse is extremely important for your children to see.   Showering your child with verbal love and physical affection is also  paramount.</li>
<li>I notice that you are a first time Mom and with  that comes a lot of natural anxiety and worry.  As a Mom of  several I can tell you I have come across all types of sexual  exploration in both my male and female children: from rubbing up against objects and innocently calling out &#8220;I&#8217;m tickling  myself!&#8221;, to having toddler boys with one of  their hands constantly down their pants, to boys proudly showing off their  erections, to calling out in any public place they can embarrass  us in &#8220;I want to have a big penis like Daddy!&#8221;  We try to respond in  easy-going and relaxed ways:  &#8220;That&#8217;s great honey&#8221; &#8220;Ok&#8221; &#8220;Yup,  that&#8217;s your penis&#8221; &#8220;That happens to all boys or girls&#8221; &#8220;No worries.&#8221;  I can report that all of these stages pass and are grown out of. You will be able to tell when they are ready for a more mature  discussion regarding sexual matters.</li>
<li>Parents who have children  with different developmental disorders such as autism, mental  retardation, Downs Syndrome, etc. can expect these sexual explorations  to continue at older ages.  That is because their children do not grow  out of their &#8220;innocence&#8221; at the times we deem age-appropriate.  This  becomes awkward  especially when these children do not understand they should not  act out sexually in public settings.  These situations require  compassion and understanding by all who come in contact with these  special spirits.</li>
<li>There are times when sexual acting out by  children can be a red flag pointing towards the possibility the child  has been sexually abused.  This has less to do with natural exploration  and more to do with acting out what would be deemed adult themes of  sexuality (i.e. humping other children, mimicking sex with dolls or  toys, touching other children&#8217;s genitals, etc.).  Not just because a  child has done these things does it mean that they have been sexually  abused (some of this can fall under normal sexual play and curiosity or  even mimicking something they&#8217;ve seen on TV).  However, if enough of  these red flags keep occurring, it may be worth looking into  and getting a more extensive assessment.  Always follow your gut in  these situations.  It&#8217;s better to err on the safe side than to do  nothing at all.</li>
</ul>
<p>It can be difficult and  extremely anxiety-producing to see our children act in what we deem  sexual ways.  That is because our adult brains have a hard time wiring  the word &#8220;innocent&#8221; and &#8220;sex&#8221; in the same thought wave.  So don&#8217;t worry &#8211;  you are perfectly normal.  And it sounds like you are on your way to  raising a wonderful son who will have loving parents willing to teach  him correct and positive principles regarding his sexuality.  What a  gift you will give him, his future wife, and his posterity in general!<br />

<p>But other writers, beginning with Homer and continuing to the present day, have noted the strong elements of intimacy and eroticism within the relationship.  <span id="more-11709"></span><!--more-->David&#8217;s love for Jonathan is described as &#8220;wonderful, passing the love of women.&#8221;  Saul also reprimands Jonathan at the dinner table, accusing him that &#8220;thou hast chosen the son of Jesse to thine own confusion, and unto the confusion of thy mother’s nakedness.&#8221;  Martti Nissinen concludes that this &#8220;choosing (<em>bahar</em>) may indicate a permanent choice and firm relationship, and the mention of &#8220;nakedness&#8221; (<em>erwa</em>) could be interpreted to convey a negative sexual nuance, giving the impression that Saul saw something indecent in Jonathan&#8217;s and David&#8217;s relationship.  Some also interpret this as Saul&#8217;s caution that choosing David as a lover meant that Jonathan could not produce an heir to the throne. There is also an exchange pointing to <a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/search?search=1+sam+18:21&amp;do=Search">1 Samuel 18:21</a>. Here Saul tells David that when he marries Michal he will become his son-in-law for the second time.  There is reason to suppose the union of Jonathan and David represents the first.</p>
<p>What does it mean that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David?</p>
<p>In trying to interpret the story of these two Biblical figures, I am greatly influenced by my reading of Michael Quinn&#8217;s <a href="http://www.press.uillinois.edu/books/catalog/74dbx6fq9780252069581.html">Same-Sex Dynamics among Nineteenth-Century Americans</a>.  In this book, Quinn describes a nineteenth-century Mormon culture far more hospitable to and tolerant of same-sex relationships than that of modern Mormonism, which he regards as &#8220;homophobic.&#8221;  He gives several examples of long-term relationships among Mormon couples he believes were homosexual.  But in doing so, he also admits of a world and an era where emotional intimacy and physical closeness of same-sex friends did NOT involve homoeroticism.  He gives examples of letters written in the nineteenth century between platonic friends which contained emotional intensity and passionate references.  Same-sex friends held hands, kissed each other on the lips, and sometimes slept in the same bed for years at a time. These things are more aptly described as &#8220;homosociality.&#8221;   Reading about this phenomenon gave me an insight into the world view of previous ages that I had not understood before reading the book.</p>
<p>At times when I read the story of David and Jonathan through my twenty-first-century lens, I have wondered if these men were not physically intimate.  The words and images used to describe their relationship are passionate, ardent, concupiscent.  But reading about some of the homosocial behaviors Quinn describes has convinced me that David and Jonathan were not gay.  I agree with Quinn that too many Americans find homosociality frightening. Some of my returned-missionary friends have spoken with embarrassment of the strong male bonding they experienced on their missions.  They recall vivid episodes involving platonic intimacy &#8212; walking arm-in-arm, embracing, and other emotional and physical affection.  We are suspicious and uncomfortable with these things in our modern paradigm.  But homosociality can be an enlightening concept to consider.  I&#8217;m glad this relationship is included among all of the other unusual associations described in the Old Testament!</p>
<p>BONUS: The woodcut of Jonathan and David pictured below may be astonishingly evocative, both to LDS members endowed before 1990 and to those familiar with Masonic ritual.</p>

<p><em>You have mentioned the importance of communicating with our spouse about our view of sex&#8211;not just the fantasies. I don&#8217;t feel like I can do that  with my husband. He is not a safe place to go for me. We have a  different opinion about how and how often we should be having sex. Part  of my opinion on that is because of insecurities that I have about my  body, that sadly, he has made even worse. So when I try to express my  opinions on the subject I feel like he has just gotten defensive. And  his defense mechanism is to just shut down. It has been going on for a  long time. In other areas of our marriage, I feel like we are doing  pretty well, but this issue has lately begun to seep through our whole  relationship and I feel like if we don&#8217;t take care of it soon, we won&#8217;t  be able to at all.</em><br />
<span id="more-11658"></span>We all come to marriage  with our own sexual histories, sexual expectations and sexual taboos.  And there is no magical guidebook given to us after the marriage ceremony to  help us navigate through these complicated thoughts, feelings and frustrations. Here are some thoughts I had as I read through  your experience:</p>
<ul>
<li>Sexuality is closely tied with our egos, self-esteem and for many a  sense of shame or  embarrassment. This is why it can be difficult to talk  about and most of us  could use some help in this department.</li>
<li>Our religious framework often has much to do with the &#8220;hows&#8221; and the &#8220;how oftens.&#8221;  Having frank and open discussions in a respectful setting regarding sex is pivotal to any couple of any faith.</li>
<li>The &#8220;how oftens&#8221; also have much to do with differences in biological drive.  Knowledge of how biological drive will affect your sexuality as a couple is also important.</li>
<li>One recommendation is to go get couples  counseling. Make sure you go to someone who is qualified to do  couples work, which is different from individual therapy. You may also consider going to a  specialized sex therapist who is even more qualified to deal with sexual  issues.  The biggest mistake that  couples make when it comes to seeking professional help is to not get it early  enough. You say your marriage is primarily in a good place. It will be much easier to do this work now before you add years of resentment, mistrust, and anger.  A good therapist, whether LDS or  not, should respect your religious values regarding sexuality.  Since the sense of safety is so important to whether or not a couple can successfully resolve issues, this should be one of the main themes around the work you do in therapy.</li>
<li>The only person you have control  over is yourself. And the only person who can work on your self-esteem  is yourself. If your partner is making comments that put you down, it  can be extremely difficult to NOT have it affect your self-esteem.  However, your self-esteem is your own responsibility and I  would recommend doing some self-esteem work. If your partner refuses to  seek help with you, it is your right to seek help anyway.</li>
<li>There is a big difference between constructive feedback  and putting somebody down. Unfortunately in marriage we can often  belittle our partner or find ourselves being criticized in an  unproductive way. A common self-defense mechanism is finding faults in others when we don&#8217;t feel good about ourselves. Your husband may be struggling with his  own self-esteem and be putting you down as a result.  Obviously in a marriage, this negative pattern  can spiral to the point that affection and intimacy are greatly  affected. It is perfectly reasonable to set appropriate boundaries  around hurtful or negative comments (i.e. &#8220;I am not ok with you putting  down the way I look. It affects my self-esteem and it is not healthy for  our marriage.&#8221;).</li>
<li>It would be helpful if we could remember that pointing out to our spouse things that we don&#8217;t like about them (especially in a critical or demeaning fashion) usually has  the opposite effect of getting what we want.</li>
<li>When it is  difficult to talk about something, especially with a spouse who  withdraws from conflict, it can be useful to write a letter instead. I  would include the following elements (and notice the use of &#8220;I&#8221;  statements which help keep you away from blame):</li>
</ul>
<ol>
<li>These  are the things I love about our marriage&#8230;. These are the things that I  think we are good at&#8230;.</li>
<li>At the same time (not however or but), I feel like we would  both agree that we&#8217;ve been struggling in this area&#8230;</li>
<li>I would  like to get some outside help so that we can look forward to increasing  the level of intimacy and trust in our relationship&#8230;. These are some  options that I am considering&#8230;</li>
<li>Please let me know your  thoughts on the matter&#8230;..</li>
<li>I believe in us&#8230;..</li>
<li>I love  you and my desire is to be closer to you&#8230;</li>
</ol>
<ul>
<li>If I was  going to work with you as a couple some information that would be  helpful to know about you would be:</li>
</ul>
<ol>
<li>is there any past  sexual trauma for either partner?</li>
<li>what are your sexual  histories?  have you been honest with each other about your sexual  histories?</li>
<li>what are the patterns of previous generations? what  kinds of relationships were modeled? how was sex education and messages  communicated about in the families of origin?</li>
<li>how has your religion framed your sexual mindset? how do each of you see the purpose of sex?</li>
<li>is there any past  or current sexual behavior that would cause shame or secrecy (i.e.  pornography use, affairs, ruminating thoughts, etc.)?</li>
<li>what&#8217;s the  level of self-esteem work that needs to be done for both?</li>
<li> are there any  eating disorders involved?</li>
<li>what correlation do you see between emotional, intellectual, spiritual and physical intimacy?</li>
</ol>
<p>For the readers of MM &#8211; what have you found useful in your relationships when talking about topics that don&#8217;t feel comfortable or safe?  How have you struck a balance between offering constructive criticism instead of belittlement?  How have you taken constructive criticism yourself?  How do gospel principles help or hinder us in this department (i.e. stand up for yourself vs turn the other cheek)?  Do you feel safe talking to your spouse about sex?  Do the church education programs prepare us to talk to our spouses about sex?  How do we best handle differences in the &#8220;how&#8221; or &#8220;how often&#8221; departments?  When should compromise be part of the equation and when shouldn&#8217;t it?  What about issues of physical attraction when one of us gains weight for example?</p>

<p>So here&#8217;s a conversation I wasn&#8217;t expecting the other morning started by my 3-year old son and joined in by my 5-year old son as they were getting dressed for the day.</p>
<p>3: &#8220;Mommy, what is this?&#8221; Lifting his penis and touching his testes.<br />
I feel my anxiety rising a bit but try to remember what I preach about staying calm and honest regarding sex ed.<br />

3: &#8220;Testes?&#8221; Repeated this word several times giggling.<br />
&#8220;Yup.&#8221;<br />
5: &#8220;Do I have testes too?&#8221;<br />
&#8220;Yes.&#8221;<br />
5: &#8220;Where?&#8221;<br />
&#8220;Under your penis &#8211; they kind of feel like small balls.&#8221;<br />

This is when I realize we are in for the long haul.<br />

&#8220;Yup.&#8221;<br />
At which point they are both satisfied and probably even bored with our conversation and run off together to play and eat cereal.<br />

<p>Developmentally speaking, these are the ages when boys and girls start having normal and appropriate curiosity regarding their bodies and to develop the sense of what makes them different from the opposite gender. It is also when they are wanting to see a connection to their same-gender parent. My hope is that by offering correct terminology, by controlling my anxiety, and by being willing to answer questions simply but accurately we can start this lifelong process of sexual education. I&#8217;m hoping I can take every opportunity my children give me to make an impact on healthy sexuality. Most of these opportunities are not &#8220;planned&#8221; events. They just happen in our day-to-day lives.</p>

<p>The two headlines above generally cover the spectrum of opinion about what happened at the Community of Christ World Conference as it completed the <a href="http://mormonmatters.org/2010/01/05/canonizing-modern-revelation-a-tourist-guide/"> process of canonization</a> of a <a href="http://cofchrist.org/dc164/"> new Section 164</a> for its D&amp;C. The spectrum of opinions about whether what happened was a good thing or bad thing, of course, runs even more broadly. Indeed, I’m not at all certain that we’ll even be able to see how intense the various “colors” of that spectrum will prove until information about the conference filters down to the bulk of the North American church that maintains no real connection to the World Church <a href="http://saintsherald.com/2010/04/13/world-conference-in-the-blogosphere/"> in the &#8220;Blogitorium&#8221;</a>. As in many churches on the Christian left in North America, that membership tends to be somewhat more traditionalist than its leadership.<span id="more-10678"></span></p>
<p>Nevertheless, I’ll give my view as someone from one part of the peanut gallery, focusing on what was in each portion of Section 164 and the effects of associated legislation passed to begin implementation. A future post will provide a similar analysis on legislation considered by the Conference not specifically addressed by Section 164 and suggest something about the overall direction of the Community of Christ in the future.</p>
<p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline">SECTION 164, PARAGRAPHS 1-4</span></strong></p>
<p>President Veazey describes the experiences of meditation, particularly on portions of Galatians 3:27-29, that led him to offer the Section. After commending the church for similarly seeking to discern the Spirit in a structured process that has been going on for well over a year, he makes explicit an understanding of the church and its sacraments which has been implicit in CofChrist theology for a number of years.</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;&#8230;Instruction given previously about baptism was proper to ensure the rise and cohesiveness of the church during its early development and in following years. However, as a growing number have come to understand, the redemptive action of God in Christ—while uniquely and authoritatively expressed through the church—is not confined solely to the church. God’s grace, revealed in Jesus Christ, freely moves throughout creation, often beyond human perception, to achieve divine purposes in people’s lives.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>The Community of Christ is to see itself as “one true church”, not as the “one <em><span style="text-decoration: underline">and only</span></em> true church”. How serious is this theological intent was earlier signaled by something I haven’t seen commentators note elsewhere. The first sessions of Conference always feature certain speeches of welcome. One is usually a non-CofChrist speaker. This speaker is often a local Congressman or a Missouri Senator. The speech is strictly non-political even then, but the identity is interesting because trends over time seem to show the direction of the church leadership’s interest.</p>
<p>This year that slot went to the Rev. Dr. Michael Kinnamon, General Secretary of the National Council of Churches. Kinnamon unabashedly spoke of the Community of Christ having unique gifts that should be seen as adding to bodies such as the NCC, rather than as a body going its own way. Ironically, contacts between the RLDS and the NCC were among the suspicions cited by fundamentalist opponents of the church circa 1970 as evidence of apostasy. Thus, such a speech 40 years ago might itself have been too controversial to occur.</p>
<p>Section 164 then lays out specific instruction (that will be followed quickly by formal administrative policy <a href="http://www.cofchrist.org/wc2010/counsel/QA3.asp"> guidance</a> to become effective by September 1, 2011). These policies will result in acceptance into membership into the Community of Christ upon confirmation by CofChrist priesthood – without requiring rebaptism if the original baptism: a) involved water;  b) was performed by an ordained Christian minister;  and c) as a personal expression of faith in Christ. In particular, we will not require someone to present proof of their baptism <em>or the baptizing minister’s credentials</em>, since that would be impossible in many places throughout the world. This clearly expands the notion of <em>true priesthood authority</em> beyond the boundaries of those called through the priesthood line passed to Joseph Smith.</p>
<p>The phrase “using water” also allows for baptisms done by immersion, pouring, or sprinkling, while upholding the church’s own standard practice of baptism by immersion at the age of accountability. There is also some additional specific guidance regarding the substance of the prayer of confirmation (Baptism of the Spirit) that is now the means by which one moves from being part of the Body of Christ into membership within the denomination. And preparation for confirmation will now be a formal requirement for the ordinance to occur.</p>
<p>Paragraph 3 contains a call for all members to serious consider and live the meaning of their baptismal covenants (water and Spirit). Paragraph 4 ties this call to consideration of the role the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper should play in renewing, witnessing, and amplifying our covenant. (Portions of the preamble specifically warn us to NOT make the meaning of the covenants atrophy even as we broaden the procedures, because of the concern that in some places this has happened with open communion).</p>
<p>This portion of the Section makes the Community of Christ look very Protestant – if you can call becoming more Protestant through modern revelation a Protestant concept in the first place.</p>
<p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline">SECTION 164, PARAGRAPHS 5-7</span></strong></p>
<p>These are the paragraphs whose approval generated the widely divergent headlines above. Their actual content is to call attention to “serious questions about moral behavior and relationships” – but to prioritize those questions not simply as they are listed within the dominant culture of the denomination.</p>
<blockquote><p><em>“These issues are complex and difficult to understand outside their particular settings because of strikingly different cultural histories, customs, and understandings of scripture. For example, the issues include female submission, female genital mutilation, child brides, forced marriages, and sexual permissiveness. They include cleansing and exploitation of widows, harsh conflicts over same-gender attraction and relationships, and varying legal, religious, and social definitions of marriage, to name just a few.&#8221;</em></p></blockquote>
<p>More importantly, the Section calls us to see the solutions for these moral dilemmas as arising from an understanding of Christianity as a community that transcends definitions by economic status, social class, sex, gender, or ethnicity. They simply are no longer primary. Relationships are to be rooted in the principles of Christ-like love, mutual respect, responsibility, justice, covenant, and faithfulness, <em>against which there is no law.</em></p>
<p>Section 164 then extrapolates that these principles require that the church move the resolution of moral issues to the church in the cultures most affected by them rather than let the dominant North American church decide for the rest of the world. Field Apostles, under the guidance of the Presidency, are authorized to call and set the agenda for field, national, or (non-geographical) cultural groups to deal with issues such as those listed above as they feel directed.</p>
<p>Uncertainty about the nature and timing of these conferences is generating the widely divergent headlines about gay rights. First, everyone in the Community of Christ seems to understand that the leadership feels that it must not expose our leaders and members in cultures where discussion of gay issues is taboo. If so, they can hardly move toward expanded gay rights in the United States unless they can find a way to maintain what the government would call “plausible deniability&#8221;.</p>
<p>Second, there is a large body of conservative members in the US church (and non-members in society) whose reaction must be anticipated and allowed for. The LDS experience with Prop 8 shows what happens when the church in the US takes any position on controversial issues in the political arena. Many feel the church has moved too hesitantly and will continue to do so; others are likely to feel the church is moving in the wrong direction entirely.</p>
<p>Finally, there are logistical questions. It seems unlikely that the US church has the resources to assemble a national conference on gay rights issues before the spring of 2012 at the earliest. It will take until September, 2011, simply to implement the new conditions for membership.</p>
<p>The greatest sign of movement toward gay rights comes from something in administrative minutia. It is normal for the church to realign Apostolic Fields following a World Conference (our Apostles retire, so there are usually changes in the Twelve). This time a gerrymandered field has been carved out for Apostle Susan Skoor that stretches from Southern Australia to Eastern  Canada – and just happens to cover all of the non-US jurisdictions that proposed World Conference legislation expanding full priesthood and sacramental rites for gays. The extension of rights in that Field or in nations within that Field <em>might be granted</em> while maintaining sufficient distance from the World Church (and prying media) to protect the church in cultures hostile to gay rights.</p>
<p>Expansion to the US is much more difficult to do while maintaining any credibility to foreign governments and religious bodies that “this is just local jurisdictions acting on their own.&#8221;</p>
<p>Perhaps more significantly in the long run than the particular moral issues – at least from the perspective of this Washington spectator – is the change these paragraphs make in the legislative rights of mission centers to set the agenda for the church. The Presidency immediately ruled 21 legislative proposals that had been painstakingly brought to the conference as out of order because they reflect National or Regional concerns. These rulings were entirely appropriate under Section 164 guidance.</p>
<p>However, the Conference later passed implementing legislation for the field and national conferences that make them “special conferences”. Such conferences operate under different parliamentary rules than World Conference. In particular,  Mission Centers lack the right to place items on the agenda of special conferences; that agenda is set <em>only</em> by the Apostle who calls the conference with the approval of the Presidency. In short, this revelation makes the Community of Christ less democratic and more theocratic than it was a year ago.</p>
<p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline">SECTION 164, PARAGRAPH 8</span></strong></p>
<p>Paragraph 8, by contrast, shows the flexibility and speed with which the Community of Christ can move on organizational issues when it wishes to do so. The Twelve and the Presidents of the Seven Quorums of Seventy have been meeting for several years in response to the immediately previous revelation (Section 163) to consider organizational changes to increase evangelistic effectiveness. Paragraph 8 is taken as authorization to make these changes.</p>
<p>Within 24 hours of Section 164 approval, the number of Quorums of Seventy was increased from seven to ten, the additional Quorum Presidents were named, and they were approved by the Conference and set apart to that calling. Jack Bauer couldn&#8217;t have moved faster. Clearly, the outcome of these discussions among the leading quorums was well prepared in advance, while they are still feeling their way around the notion of how and when national conferences will function.</p>
<p>Reorganization of the Twelve, while not fundamental, essentially separates the world into 10 Fields for the moment, each led by an Apostle, with the remaining two Apostles focusing on Headquarters-oriented tasks. For the first time, a single Quorum of Seventy will be aligned with the geographic or other missionary focus of a Field Apostle.</p>
<p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline">SECTION 164, PARAGRAPH 9</span></strong></p>
<p>The final paragraph of the document is a benediction of sorts, and a challenge that the rise of Zion is no farther away than the willingness of all of us – all the “beloved children of the Restoration” – to overcome our insecurities and embrace a Christ-like life.</p>

<p>In the next scriptural passage the lesson covers, we meet Dinah, &#8220;The Virgin.&#8221;  As with most archetypal women figures, Dinah is shadowed and one-dimensional.  She is described as a daughter and a sister to be protected and avenged by her father and brothers. She is &#8220;defiled&#8221; by Shechem, a young man of highborn status from a neighboring town.  We are not told how she feels about this lover, whose &#8220;soul clave unto [her]&#8221; and who desired to marry her.  The lesson material tells us that Shechem did not truly love Dinah, or else he would not have defiled her.  However, <a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/gen/34">Genesis 34</a> describes his offer to pay any amount for a dowry, and his willingness to join with her people, submit to circumcision, and convince all of the men in his town to do the same. In my eyes he is a tragic and romantic figure.  I wish there was more information available about Dinah&#8217;s response to this man. But the lack of detail is necessary to preserve the asexual, archetypal element of the deflowered virgin in the story.</p>
<p>Perhaps it is an unconscious arrangement for the writers of this lesson to have placed these two bilateral female archetypes side by side in the lesson material, but if so, it is all the more significant.  Archetypes are elementary ideas stemming from the unconscious.  The danger in including only these two women in the lesson is that they are both powerless.  Dinah the virgin is a victim of a powerful male, and Mrs. Potiphar the whore is also rendered powerless by the virtuous Joseph who rejects her advances.  Males in the stories are shown as individuals with the ability and strength to choose and control their sexual and moral options.</p>
<p>One might feel constrained by the material on women available in the scriptures, however, there exists within these passages a third woman who might prove to be a foil to our figurative virgin and whore.  Let us examine the lessons taught by the actions of Tamar in <a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/gen/38/1-30#1">Genesis 38</a>.  Tamar is conspicuously left out of the lesson manual, though this chapter is included as part of the scripture block.  Judah&#8217;s actions are briefly contrasted with the faithfulness of Joseph.  Going back to the scripture passage, we read that Judah chose Tamar to be the wife of his eldest son, Er.  When Er died, custom dictated that the next son, Onan would marry her and provide her with children.  Onan&#8217;s refusal to properly execute his responsibility resulted in his death, and the next son, Shelah, was not old enough to marry.  Judah told Tamar to go and live with her parents until Shelah was grown, and then promptly forgot or ignored the family&#8217;s responsibilities to the widow.  Several years later, Tamar conceived a plan to remind Judah of these things.</p>
<p><a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/search?search=Deut+25%3A5-10&amp;do=Search">Deuteronomy 25: 5-10</a> shows that the law was on her side, and Tamar could have reported Judah to the authorities, legally loosened Judah&#8217;s shoe, and spit in his face.  But she was smarter than that.  In contrast to the other women acknowledged in the lesson, Tamar deliberately used her sexuality to affect her destiny.  Despite the fact that she lived in a culture where women had little power or choice over their own circumstances, she seized her opportunities and was rewarded for so doing.  If we reduce this gospel lesson down to following or not following a strict standard of sexual morality, we miss the potent, powerful, and purposeful choice of Tamar to initiate sex with her father-in-law.  This choice is presented in the scriptures as a faithful action.  The nuance and meaning of the word &#8220;righteous&#8221; as Judah uses it to describe Tamar is very significant in understanding whether her actions were justified. The Hebrew word used is <em>tsadaq</em>, &#8220;to be just or righteous.&#8221; This word and its derivatives are used hundreds of times throughout the Old Testament. It is used to describe the righteousness of Noah (<a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/search?search=gen+7%3A1&amp;do=Search">Gen. 7:1</a>), the Law (<a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/search?search=deut+4%3A8&amp;do=Search">Deu. 4:8</a>), David (<a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/search?type=references&amp;last=deut+4%3A8&amp;help=&amp;ro=checked&amp;search=1+sam+24%3A17%0D%0A&amp;do=Search&amp;show=%0D%0A%0D%0A">1 Sam. 24:17</a>), and even Jehovah (<a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/search?type=references&amp;last=1+sam+24%3A17&amp;help=&amp;ro=checked&amp;search=2+chr+12%3A6%0D%0A&amp;do=Search&amp;show=%0D%0A%0D%0A%0D%0A%0D%0A">2 Chr. 12:6</a>). The meaning is thus: correct, right before God, or justified, in a very strong sense of the word righteous. Tamar was a woman of integrity who struck out in a creative though unorthodox way to fulfill her duty to herself and her family.  Her exploit resulted in twin sons, one of whom would continue the chosen lineage and become the progenitor of the Messiah.  Tamar is a complex human being and one of the few women in the scriptural record who is described in such a rich and nuanced manner.</p>
<p>What is more, the story of Tamar can be nicely dovetailed with a secondary message of Lesson 11, that class members &#8220;learn how to make all experiences and circumstances work together for their good.&#8221;  Surely Tamar deserves a prominent place in Lesson 11, wherever female members form part of the class population!  Don&#8217;t you agree?</p>

<p>Although I agree with Elder Oak in principle, I suspect that some of the decisions that I make will be of this more negative order.  Moreover, these will most probably be the more painful of the two types.  Lets consider the possible impact in Abraham and Sarai&#8217;s lives (and these might be possible questions to raise in SS if you can get them to cover this episode):</p>

<p>Now if Nibley were here he might argue that this is merely a devilish trick to make us choose between two equally evil propositions (which is worse crack or heroine), but there is always a third choice.   If this is true then what was Abraham&#8217;s other choice?</p>
<p>Finally, is there any possible spiritual benefit in such choices?  Can any good come from them?</p>
<p>To my mind I feel that my life is a constant series of these types of choices and thus I am constantly given the choice between conflicting options that inevitably will lead to some negativity.  Perhaps I am just a half-empty kinda guy but I feel for Abraham.</p>
<p>My questions then are these:</p>
<p>Are there situations where there are only choices which are bad, worse and worst? Or can we always escape such decisions?</p>
<p>If so, is this possible a spiritually useful situation or do we just have to move through such experiences seeking forgiveness where we can?</p>

The results run like this: High Self-Esteem = Having sex later in life High Self-Esteem =Increased Promiscuity &#8211; This means that they will be less likely to have sex, but when they do they are more likely to have sex with a variety of partners.  Although on average, higher self-esteem does have a protective effect (i.e. it lowers the numbers of sexual partners). Higher Self-Esteem = Increased chance of using a condom.  Although for the highest levels of self-esteem this actuall drops slightly. <p>The background of the story should be taken into account as we try to figure out what is happening. In <a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/gen/18">Genesis 18</a>, three angelic messengers visit Abraham to prophesy about the birth of his son and to warn of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. This is the part where Abraham shows his compassion by bargaining with the Lord for a stay of execution if there are 10 righteous people to be found in the city. The narrative shows that the destruction has already been decreed, even before Lot&#8217;s experience with the men of Sodom.</p>
<p>Next, the angels enter the city. That Lot meets them at the gate is significant. Though a resident alien, Lot is taking a turn guarding the walls. Sodom has been at war, and not surprisingly the inhabitants of the city are wary of visitors. The very night a <em>non-native</em> of the city is trusted to watch the gate (thus controlling traffic in and out), he lets two people that <em>nobody</em> knows into the city and what&#8217;s more <em>behind closed doors for the night in his house</em>! Certainly this raised some eyebrows and caused some suspicion. Soon the residents of Sodom &#8212; all the people, both young and old &#8212; have gathered outside of Lot&#8217;s house and are demanding that Lot bring the visitors out &#8220;that we may <em>know</em> them.&#8221;</p>
<p>The meaning of the Hebrew word <em>yada&#8217;</em> (to know) has engendered much of the controversy behind this story. The word has a euphemistic meaning (to engage in coitus). Of 943 times <em>yada&#8217;</em> is used in the Old Testament, only ten times is it used with a sexual connotation, and all of these are heterosexual coitus. Thus <a href="http://timesandseasons.org/index.php/2006/02/sometimes-a-cigar-is-just-a-cigar/">some have conjectured</a> that the townspeople were merely asking to know the credentials and intentions of strangers in their city. On the other hand, when <em>yada&#8217;</em> is used with a sexual meaning, a large number of those references occur within the book of Genesis. In fact, the word is used in a clearly euphemistic sense in <a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/gen/19/8#8">Genesis 19:8</a>, just three verses after the reference in question.</p>
<p>The absolute sacredness of a guest was a principle well known in the Middle East. Lot wanted to protect his guests, and he refused to hand them over to the crowd. When the crowd insisted, he offered his two daughters as the most expedient diversion for a hostile situation. In the Joseph Smith Translation of these verses, it is suggested that Lot did not offer his daughters, but that the Sodomites demanded the girls as well as the visiting angels. But there is another story in the Bible which parallels the Genesis story. It is found in Judges <a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/search?search=judges+19%3A13-27&amp;do=Search">19:13-27</a>. In this account, the house guest was a man, not an angel, and the master of the house offered his daughter and the man&#8217;s concubine to the mob. They accepted the concubine woman in place of the man, and raped her until she died. The city was destroyed &#8212; for heterosexual rape and violation of the law of hospitality. In spite of this very similar destruction of a city, no one condemns heterosexuality on the basis of this passage, but rather there is condemnation of rape.</p>
<p>This may indicate that the story of Sodom in Genesis has little to do with homosexuality and more to do with rampant, violent sex as well as irreverent attitudes regarding sex. Sodom’s primary sin was violence. The threat against the messengers and Lot’s daughters is a threat of sexual violence in which sexual orientation is irrelevant. The behavior of the people of Sodom wasn’t about attraction. It was about harming people as profoundly as they could. One might conclude that gang raping some guys is a pretty serious sin, no matter how you look at it. Making the sudden leap to compare them to committed monogomous gay couples, however, is outrageous and unfounded. There is no real similarity, and indeed, our modern Western view of &#8220;sexual orientation&#8221; did not exist in ancient Biblical times.</p>
<p>Another method of uncovering the meaning of the lesson of Sodom is by looking at how other Biblical passages interpret the story. Throughout the Old Testament, Sodom is held up as a lesson in wickedness that deserves utter destruction for reasons other than homosexual acts. Of the eighteen passages outside of the story itself found in Old Testament writings<strong> <em>none refer to same sex activity</em></strong>, and only one alludes to sexual immorality (namely, adultery). To cite a few examples of those found among the words of the Hebrew prophets, Isaiah (<a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/search?search=Isaiah+1%3A1-17&amp;do=Search">1:1-17</a>; <a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/search?search=Isaiah+1%3A1-17&amp;do=Search">13:1-22</a>) refers to Sodom and Gomorrah to condemn general evil and injustice; Jeremiah (<a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/search?search=jer+23%3A9-15&amp;do=Search">23:9-15</a>), to general moral and ethical laxity. Ezekiel (<a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/search?search=ezekiel+16%3A46-56&amp;do=Search">16:46-56</a>) and Amos (<a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/amos/4/11#11">chapter 4</a>) condemn the kingdoms of Judah and Israel, more specifically, for neglecting the poor and needy.</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy. And they were haughty, and committed abomination before me&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>The Deuterocanonical books identify the sin as pride and inhospitality; in Wisdom 19:13-14, we read &#8220;&#8230;whereas the men of Sodom received not the strangers when they came among them.&#8221; In Ecclesiasticus 16:8 the sin is recognized as pride. In the New Testament, too, there is reference to Sodom&#8217;s sins: In <a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/search?search=matt+10%3A14-15&amp;do=Search">Matthew 10:14-15</a> and <a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/search?search=luke+10%3A10-13&amp;do=Search">Luke 10:10-13</a>, Jesus implied that the sin of the people of Sodom was to be inhospitable and to reject the words of the gospel messengers.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s not until the very late books of <a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/2_pet/2/6-7#6">2 Peter 2</a> and <a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/jude/1/7#7">Jude 6</a>, that &#8220;sexual immorality&#8221; and &#8220;depraved lusts&#8221; are considered sins of Sodom. In 2 Peter especially, the author seems to be drawing a comparison between “the sons of God” who came down to earth and mated with “the daughters of men” (<a href="../2010/02/06/joseph-smith-didnt-believe-in-watchers/">see Lesson 6</a>), and the men of Sodom who attempted to do sexual violence to the divine visitors whom Lot invited into his home. The comparison is that there was an unnatural mating, or attempt at a violent sexual act, between a divine being and a human being. The first acts lead ultimately to destruction by a flood, the second attempted act to destruction by fire.</p>
<p>A final consideration for the Latter-day Saint might be the words of modern Prophets and Apostles upon the matter. I will only include a few quotations here, but they are enough to demonstrate that there is a lack of consensus upon why the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed, and whether or not it had to do with homosexuality. Joseph Smith preached:</p>
<blockquote><p>“In consequence of rejecting the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the Prophets whom God hath sent, the judgments of God have rested upon people, cities, and nations, in various ages of the world, which was the case with the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, that were destroyed for rejecting the Prophets.” <a href="http://www.lds.org/ldsorg/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=da135f74db46c010VgnVCM1000004d82620aRCRD&amp;locale=0&amp;sourceId=4c9720596a845110VgnVCM100000176f620a____&amp;hideNav=1&amp;contentLocale=0"><em>Teachings of the Presidents of the Church: Joseph Smith</em></a>, 192–205. <p>In contrast, Spencer W. Kimball unequivocally equated the sin of Sodom and Gomorrah with homosexuality:</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;We hear more and more each day about the sins of adultery, homosexuality, and lesbianism. Homosexuality is an ugly sin, but because of its prevalence, the need to warn the uninitiated, and the desire to help those who may already be involved with it, it must be brought into the open. It is the sin of the ages. It was present in Israel’s wandering as well as after and before. It was tolerated by the Greeks. It was prevalent in decaying Rome. The ancient cities of Sodom and Gomorrah are symbols of wretched wickedness more especially related to this perversion, as the incident of Lot’s visitors indicates. (Spencer W. <p>Ezra Taft Benson taught that pride was the sin which caused the city of Sodom to be destroyed:</p>

<p>More in line with Ezekiel, Neal A. Maxwell considered Sodom&#8217;s sin to be neglect of the poor and needy:</p>

<p>Perhaps in this post I have taken the long way around to show that, while I don&#8217;t think that homosexual orientation can be blamed for the destruction of Sodom and the cities of the plain, there are several valid interpretations of this passage. Additionally, there are many questions we don&#8217;t have good answers for. Why did Lot offer his daughters in place of the heavenly visitors, and why was he not condemned for this action? Of the entire city of Sodom, were there not children under 8 years old, and possibly others who were innocently killed in the destruction? Is it possible to connect the several sexual relationships which seem to run through the scripture block comprising Genesis 18-19? What are the symbolic meanings of the characters and actions? The story is so ambiguous that perhaps every reader comes away with a different perception of the lesson to be taught. I have illustrated that point by including below some art work, each with its own unique depiction of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah.</p>

<h4>Posing the Questions on a Personal Level</h4>
<p>Since these two bloggers did such a nice job, I will not attempt to address his remarks directly.  Rather, I am interested in discussing the address from a personal standpoint.  Particularly, I&#8217;m interested in how I, jmb275, can understand and deal with his remarks since I clearly do not agree with him.</p>
<p>Let me be very clear here, I do not agree with Elder Hafen&#8217;s remarks, and I recognize the poor research, logical fallacies, and dogmatic approach to this issue. I also recognize that Elder Hafen was very bold, possibly to the point of establishing new doctrine (resurrection is, definitively, a mechanism which removes homosexual feelings?).  However, <strong>none of this is what I want to deal with</strong>.  What is done, is done, and his remarks have been analyzed.  I&#8217;m interested in answering the following questions:</p>
<ol>
<li>Is this the last straw?  Should I simply leave the church?</li>
<li>If not, do I have to agree with Elder Hafen to be a member in good standing?</li>
<li>How can I categorize, or otherwise deal with Elder Hafen&#8217;s remarks?</li>
<li>What is my relationship with the church, and does my membership imply my consent for, or agreement with what has been said?</li>
</ol>
<h4>Answering the Questions For <strong>ME</strong></h4>
<ul>
<li><strong>Answering #1</strong>.  I am not in the business of trying to convince people to stay in the church, or to leave the church.  I see great arguments on both sides.  However, I have made my choice to stay, and find spiritual nourishment in my choice.  There&#8217;s simply enough good, to me, in the church, and I am sufficiently attached to it psychologically, and physically (through family) to convince me to remain.  If your choice is to leave, then we&#8217;re done here and you can move along.  Since I choose to remain we will move on to answering the other questions (and since it wouldn&#8217;t be a very interesting blog post if I didn&#8217;t).</li>
<li><strong>Answering #2</strong>. I think there will be many who would answer &#8220;yes&#8221; to this question.  I believe this is a product of our Mormon culture.  Indeed, from my reading of Joseph Smith&#8217;s life, I think the very idea would strike against what Joseph said and did!  The good news is that despite what many might think, there is nothing in any doctrine of which I am aware that says disagreement with one of the Brethren puts my membership in jeopardy.  Certainly I can &#8220;sustain&#8221; the Brethren, and recognize their authority in the church without agreeing with everything they say!</li>
<li><strong>Answering #3</strong>. It would seem like there are some relatively straightforward answers to this question.
<ul>
<li>Elder Hafen is a man, so we could conclude that his remarks are &#8220;the philosophies of men, mingled with scripture.&#8221;  After all, I have chalked up lots of things said by prophets to this idea.  There certainly is truth in this analysis since each of us &#8220;see[s] through a glass, darkly&#8221;(1 Cor 13:12).</li>
<li>Elder Hafen is not the prophet, nor does he speak for the prophet (at least he didn&#8217;t indicate that we was).  Hence, we can conclude that this does not represent the position of the church collectively, and may not be God&#8217;s will.</li>
<li>Elder Hafen is using apologetics, coupled with suspect research, all as a dogmatist to draw invalid conclusions.  Indeed, rather than examining the evidence and drawing conclusions (the scientific method), the dogmatist already knows the &#8220;truth&#8221; (has drawn the conclusions) and must <em>interpret</em> the evidence accordingly.</li>
</ul>
<p>These are all valid points, and possible answers.  But notice that they focus on characterizing Elder Hafen himself, or his remarks.  I am interested in something more.  How can I <em>understand</em> his remarks, disagree with them, but still respect him and his position?</p>
<p>For this, I feel I must turn to an attempt to understand Elder Hafen in a Christlike way.  Are his intentions good?  Does he believe that what he&#8217;s doing is right?  Does he really seek to hurt people, or does he seek to help them overcome what he believes is a temptation to be conquered?  In other words, rather than dismissing his words and analyzing their negative effect on people, I am seeking understanding as to what leads him to make such remarks in the first place.  After all, most of us do what we think is best, not intentionally trying to hurt each other, although that effort may be misguided!</p>
<p>What does this approach buy me?  Empathy, and understanding!  Not <em>agreement</em>, and not <em>consent</em>, but understanding.  It seeks nuance when the tendency is to be dismissive (black), or accepting (white).  It gives me the tools I need to avoid letting anger dictate my actions.  And, ultimately, at the end of the day, I personally believe that this kind of understanding helps me to transcend my natural inclinations, and use a higher model of human interaction.</li>
<li><strong>Answering #4</strong>. Answering #4 is an important key, for me, in understanding my relationship with any of the organizations to which I belong &#8211; church, work, country, school, etc.  For me, it is a balancing act.  I must sufficiently care for the organization (since I receive benefit from it) to desire to stay a part of it, and desire that it remain intact.  But in contrast, I must be sufficiently divorced from the organization in order to avoid the personal pitfalls that come with being a part of it (groupthink, mind control, defending the indefensible, etc.).How do I directly apply this balancing act to the church?  I have separated my spiritual growth from the organization!  Currently, I find the church a useful mechanism for me to serve, pray, introspect, and otherwise grow spiritually.  Arguably, some of this may be attached to being raised LDS.  That&#8217;s irrelevant to me, as the important point is that I grow spiritually in this particular environment.  It also means I can look at Elder Hafen&#8217;s remarks and not feel inclined to defend that with which I do not agree.  In contrast to the response to #3, this balancing act <em>does</em> allow me the ability to dismiss his remarks (should I feel so inclined).
<p>Certainly this can be taken to the extreme, and if the church started sanctioning secret assassinations I would be the first one out the door.  But I don&#8217;t see this type of evil in the LDS church (contrary to what some <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Under_the_Banner_of_Heaven">critics</a> may infer).  I love this church, and want it to succeed.  But I maintain sufficient distance that I need not accept every piece of doctrine or opinion.</li>
</ul>
<p>I appreciate what has been said regarding Elder Hafen&#8217;s speech by others in the bloggernacle.  I make no excuse for the backward step his words seem to imply.  However, I do wish to transcend his remarks and take them in stride.  These words from Denise Turner in the Ensign a few years back seem particularly appropriate:</p>
<blockquote><p>Regrettably, there are times when others&#8217; motives are not entirely innocent. This may particularly cause pain and confusion when the offender&#8217;s actions seem to contradict the religion he or she espouses; yet even in these difficult situations we are not justified in nursing our anger or turning away from the Church. President Stephen L Richards, First Counselor to President David O. McKay, said, &#8220;Does one offense wipe out another? Does weakness in one, even one who has been given a testimony of the truth, justify transgression of the law or failure to listen to its precepts?&#8221; (&#8220;Encouragement for Repenters,&#8221; Improvement Era, June 1956, 398). Our testimonies must be based on Jesus Christ, not on imperfect and fallible individuals. (Denise Turner, &#8220;If Any Man Offend Not&#8221;, Ensign, August 1998)</p></blockquote>
<p>Whether your testimony is literal, metaphorical, or you are TBM, non-Mormon, or a middle-way advocate, I think we can learn to understand our fellows better, and while not agreeing with them, can still respect and honor them.</p>
<p>So how do you plan to deal with Elder Hafen&#8217;s remarks?</p>

I would like <span>to</span> respond <span>to</span> your accusation that Mormons are prejudiced or &#8220;anti-<span>gay</span>&#8220;.  First of all, let me say that my aunt and my cousin are both <span>gay</span>, and I love them and they are among <span>the</span> most faithful, well-respected members of our Stake.  I also once had a Bishop who was <span>gay</span> and he was a pillar of <span>the</span> community and a spiritual giant.  Before I say anything else, I would like <span>to</span> remind you that since <span>the</span> release of Official Declaration 3 on October 27th, 2025, <span>the</span> LDS church has extended <span>the</span> Priesthood <span>to</span> ALL WORTHY MALES, whether <span>gay</span>, straight, or celibate.</p>
<p>Regarding <span>the</span> church&#8217;s involvement in Prop 8 back in 2008: you have <span>to</span> understand <span>the</span> policical climate of <span>the</span> time.  This was a time when activist judges <span>were</span> legislating from <span>the</span> bench, overturning <span>the</span> will of <span>the</span> majority and ignoring <span>the</span> separation of powers.  Those judges <span>were</span> trying <span>to</span> force Californians <span>to</span> accept <span>gay</span> <span>marriage</span> against their will, and an unwilling public (whether right or wrong) is a dangerous public nonetheless.  Our <span>gay</span> brothers and sisters had suffered enough at <span>the</span> hands of <span>the</span> hate-mongering Fundamentalists.  <span>The</span> very last thing we wanted <span>to</span> do was <span>to</span> fan <span>the</span> flames of hate, granting rights <span>to</span> gays that <span>the</span> public simply wasn&#8217;t ready <span>to</span> give.  Voting against <span>gay</span> <span>marriage</span> IN THAT PLACE AND AT THAT TIME was <span>the</span> most loving, most humane thing we could do <span>to</span> stem <span>the</span> tide of hate-crimes perpetrated against gays.</p>
<p>I mean come on, you&#8217;ve seen <span>the</span> old news footage of Evangelicals yelling and screaming that &#8220;God hates gays&#8221; and &#8220;there are no Q***** in heaven&#8221;. Evangelicals in every state <span>were</span> picketing <span>the</span> funerals of dead soldiers saying <span>the</span> second Iraq war was God&#8217;s punishment for accepting <span>gay</span> <span>marriage</span>.  It goes without saying that those <span>were</span> dark, ignorant times. But let&#8217;s be reasonable: just because a couple of Apostles (born in a homophobic time, raised by homophobic parents, living in a homophobic country) may have expressed some personal opinions against gays doesn&#8217;t mean that they <span>were</span> speaking for all Mormons everywhere. Honestly, it really annoys me when people say, &#8220;Mormons believe that gays are sinners&#8221; because I AM a Mormon and I can assure you I know <span>what</span> I believe!</p>
<p>Admittedly, we don&#8217;t claim <span>to</span> understand all of <span>the</span> reasons why <span>the</span> Lord would have asked <span>the</span> Saints <span>to</span> vote against Prop 8 (<span>the</span> Lord works in mysterious ways, you know).  But this much is certain: <span>the</span> fact that some of <span>the</span> <span>Brethren</span> asked a handful of Latter-day Saints in California OVER 30 YEARS AGO <span>to</span> vote against <span>gay</span> <span>marriage</span> IN NO WAY diminishes our love and respect for our <span>gay</span> brothers and sisters, many of whom lead our church today.</div>

I took a stab at part of his comment in a post on my blog, wondering if it&#8217;s possible for<a href="http://irresistibledisgrace.wordpress.com/2009/07/24/is-mormonism-complacent-conservative-christianity/"> the church to be complacent</a>.</p>
<p>But there was another curious (if bold) comment he had made&#8230;he points out how he feels in certain areas he hasn&#8217;t <em>earned his morals</em>, and that many members aren&#8217;t &#8220;earning&#8221; their morals. If one isn&#8217;t truly &#8220;earning his morals&#8221; from following guidance like the Word of Wisdom or the Law of Chastity, then how do we avoid or move past simply practicing a <a href="http://ldstalk.wordpress.com/2009/07/28/legalisms-place-in-christianity/">modern and vain form of legalism</a>?</p>

<p>The meaningful part for this discussion was:</p>
<blockquote><p>I worry that Brigham Young’s fears may be prophetic – the LDS Church cannot stand wealth. It cannot withstand success. We have grown fat and complacent in our certainties and blessings. We have taken our moral rightness for granted. We have taken our status as chosen people for granted.We have been given a pearl of great price, and thus far, we seem content to use it as a paperweight.</p>
<p>That is the fundamental flaw with Mormon fundamentalism. It’s smug. It’s prideful. It’s complacent. It takes it’s own blessed status with God for granted&#8230;</p>
<p>The trouble with the “cultural conservative” view in Mormonism&#8230;is not that they advocate for strong morals. The problem is that they really did nothing to earn those morals.</p>
<p>I never slept with any woman before my wedding night. But, while I am grateful for that, I take no moral self-satisfaction from it. The truth is, I didn’t have sex with girls before then because I was raised not to. And frankly, I was too shy as a teenager to ever get to the point with a girl where sex was even a possibility. I earned no right to feel smug about my “purity” as opposed to the drunk frat boys I kept hearing about. What did I earn? What basis for pride on the issue did I ever have?</p>
<p>But modern Mormon culture takes exactly this position. The modern generation of Mormons rest on laurels they have not earned, tout morals that are not truly theirs, and pray to a God that they cannot know – because their preconceptions keep getting in the way.</p>
<p>The cry of “all is well in Zion” has gone on long enough. I think I’d like to see some new sermons.</p></blockquote>
<p>How can one truly earn his morals? I mean, obviously, a drunk frat boy who converts will see the clear distinction between his past and present life (and the hope is that he&#8217;ll feel he&#8217;s moved &#8220;up&#8221;)&#8230;but that&#8217;s it wouldn&#8217;t be safe to say that all of the BIC youth should be shuffled into big sin <em>just</em> to show them what it&#8217;s like.</p>
<p>Or is the point simply that we shouldn&#8217;t take moral self-satisfaction <em>anyway</em>? After all, if we&#8217;re all counseled to be humble, isn&#8217;t it silly to dash all that away by being <em>proud</em> of having the Gospel when instead one should remain humble to have it?</p>
<p>And relating to that legalism thing&#8230;are we fulfilling the spirit of things through our obedience to the letter of things? Or is the the case that unearned morals still obstruct our view of trying to show true charity to others?</p>
<p>Do you think Seth is on to something, or is he just an angry, angry man?</p>

<div>Ray has elsewhere shared his heterodox view that relationships in the eternities will be non-sexual and possibly polyandrous.  That sounds a little like the Greek Gods minus the sex.  I&#8217;m neither convinced nor dismissive of this notion, and so I include it as an interesting theory.</div>

<p>Rather than being hyper-sensitive to any and all possibilities for sexual stimulation and avoiding all such exposure, I believe the godly way to avoid the type of temptation embodied in &#8220;looking upon a woman to lust after her&#8221; is found in an expansive definition of &#8220;chastity&#8221; &#8211; one that goes beyond the more limited definition of avoiding &#8220;sexual&#8221; activity, &#8220;sexual&#8221; images or sexuality that too many people assume.</p>
<p>First, &#8220;lust&#8221; is used in this passage as a verb &#8211; so, in this verse&#8221;to lust&#8221; appears to mean:</p>
<blockquote><p>to express or feel uncontrolled or illicit sexual desire or appetite; to have have an excessive craving for</p></blockquote>
<p>Conversely, the definition for &#8220;chaste&#8221; that opposes this construct best is:</p>
<blockquote><p>Pure in thought and act; innocent; free from lewdness and obscenity, or indecency in act or speech; modest (as, a chaste mind; chaste eyes).</p></blockquote>
<p>The interesting association in this definition is the use of the word &#8220;modest&#8221; &#8211; which in context is defined as: &#8220;limited or moderate in amount, extent, etc.&#8221; In other words, taking both of these definitions in the context of the admonition in Matthew, the underlying characteristic that Jesus appears to be addressing is &#8220;moderation&#8221; or &#8220;control&#8221; &#8211; being able to see and appreciate physical beauty without going to any extreme, without including &#8220;lewdness, obscenity, indecency, lust, etc.&#8221; This is a much more comprehensive and fundamentally empowering / liberating view of &#8220;chastity&#8221; than a simple abstinence from proscribed activities &#8211; which manifests itself generally as a negative and constricting principle. Also, <span style="font-weight: bold;">and this is critical</span>, the definition highlights being &#8220;chaste&#8221; as something primarily existing within the individual.</p>
<p>I am reminded of a story I heard once. I don&#8217;t know if it is historically accurate, but it illustrates this characteristic in a very simple and direct way. According to this story, a woman notorious for traveling in the nude (Lady Godiva, perhaps) was passing a group of religious leaders (the Pope and some Cardinals, perhaps). One of the Cardinals told everyone to cover their eyes and look away, but the Pope did not do so. The woman saw the reaction her passing had created, including the fact that the Pope did not look away &#8211; and she asked him why he did not do so. His response was something like:</p>
<blockquote><p>You are a daughter of God, and he has blessed you with great beauty. I appreciate that gift God has given and praise him for his gracious gift, so why would I look away?</p></blockquote>
<p>I believe it is important to remember that Adam and Eve covered their nakedness only after Satan pointed out that they were naked and that others would see it. I mention this simply to stress that the typical restrictions we employ as a part of this mortal existence are in place NOT because physicality and sexuality are bad things, but because we do not want to place undue temptation and stimulation in the path of others &#8211; we do not want them to &#8220;look upon a (wo)man to lust after her (him)&#8221; due to our actions.</p>
<p>However, if all were &#8220;chaste&#8221; in their thoughts and deeds, such restrictions would not be necessary. In other words, we seek &#8220;modesty&#8221; (moderation) in dress as an attempt to strike a proper balance between the ideal of chastity we desire and the practical state of lustfulness by which we are surrounded &#8211; between where we wish we were (as individuals and/or a society) and where we actually are.</p>
<p>True &#8220;chastity,&#8221; therefore, includes not only conforming to reasonable societal constraints intended to avoid placing temptation in the path of others but also having our hearts changed to not be tempted no matter our surroundings &#8211; <strong>to not &#8220;lust after her&#8221; even when &#8220;looking upon a woman&#8221; cannot be avoided.</strong></p>
<p>I don&#8217;t have a simple solution or suggestion for all &#8211; or even for any particular individual. I know it is neither the extreme conservatism of the Taliban in Afghanistan nor the extreme liberalism of South Beach, Florida &#8211; but I know that I must be able to walk in either world and be free of &#8220;lust&#8221; in order to fulfill the standard Jesus holds up in these verses.</p>
<p>In summary, my being chaste in thought and deed is <span style="font-weight: bold;">MY</span> responsibility. I can&#8217;t blame the environment around me &#8211; or those whose appearance &#8220;naturally&#8221; might tempt me &#8211; or claim the devil made me do it. I must change myself ultimately, even if I first must change my exposure and environment until I reach the point where they no longer matter. I shouldn&#8217;t dive into tempting situations recklessly, simply in order to test my control, but rather I can change my thoughts and actions until I can face such situations without temptation. If I never reach that ultimate objective, I must continue to structure my environment to reduce temptation, but eliminating all possible temptation can never be the default.</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;Whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p><strong>In this passage, the woman is <span style="font-weight: bold;">NOT</span> at fault for her beauty or her &#8220;seuxality&#8221; or anything else; the man is at fault for how he reacts.</strong> While I believe in modesty in dress, at the most fundamental level the one being viewed is not &#8220;guilty&#8221; of causing the viewer&#8217;s reaction.  There are cases where s/he certainly bears some responsibility when acting in reckless disregard to the sensibilities of others, but at the most basic level the primary responsibility (at the very least) rests with the one &#8220;looking&#8221; to not &#8220;lust&#8221;.</p>
<p>At its most fundamental level, I believe &#8220;chastity&#8221; is <span style="font-weight: bold;">NOT</span> a restriction imposed externally; it is a characteristic developed internally.</p>

<p>Joseph Smith said that even the telestial Kingdom was thousands of times better than this world and if we had a glimpse of it we would kill ourselves now to get there. I think many of us now would disagree with Joseph Smith Jr in light of reading the more current views of Joseph Fielding Smith.</p>
<p>In the <a href="http://www.lds.org/library/display/0,4945,161-1-11-1,00.html">family proclamation</a> we learn that Gender is an essential characteristic of individual premortal, mortal, and eternal identity and purpose. But the family proclamation is not kingdom specific to whether will still have our male or female gender if we don&#8217;t make it to the highest kingdom of the Celestial Kingdom.</p>
<p>I thought I was being unique <em>(pun) </em>in this post but as I have researched,being a so called  EUNUCH is a phrase used in the Bloggernacle since 2006 its called  <a href="http://faithpromotingrumor.wordpress.com/2006/12/18/the-tk-smoothie-rule/">TK SMOOTHIE</a></p>
<p>It has two definitions</p>
<ol type="1">
<li>The logical conclusion for JFS, then, was to say      that the people in the TK would not have male or female genitalia.</li>
<li>If a doctrine of the church seems like it has      been created in order to &#8220;fix&#8221; or explain another, it might be a TK      Smoothie. The TK Smoothie is eponymous for all doctrines that are probably      bogus but exist in order to clarify some other doctrine or speculation.</li>

<p>In Mormonism, we have an expanded picture of life that extends before this mortal life and then on into the eternities. However, when you really dig into this, it turns out that we have very few details on what to expect after this life, and the details we do have come mostly from talks given almost 175 years ago. And to say that our expectations of &#8216;Heaven,&#8217; have changed quite a bit since then is a gross understatement.</p>
<p>Despite all the speculation, one detail that we know for sure: unless you make it to the highest degree of the Celestial Kingdom, there will be no eternal sex. Basically, you&#8217;d be turned into a Telestial/Terrestrial Kingdom Smoothie (TK Smoothie). I like to imagine these lesser-Kingdoms as the Barbie &amp; Ken Kingdoms. Everyone walking around looking beautiful and perfect for eternity, but having a smooth under-carriage like Barbie or Ken.</p>

<p>I would like to believe as Parley P Pratt describes that this mutual affection will not only be for this life but carried through to all the kingdoms after this life to all of our Brothers and Sisters who have lived on this earth.</p>

<li>If JFS doctrine is correct the word Brother and Sister takes on a whole      different meaning in the Terrestrial and Telestial Kingdom?</li>
<li>Is it silly doctrine we should jettison?</li>
<li>If it is still true do you think if we      emphasised it more it might motivate members to push harder for the      Celestial Kingdom?</li>
<li>Doctrines of Salvation is most of it safe doctrine we can use in our talks and lessons ?  Is      some of it suspect and if it is how do we know what that is? Do you think of it as interesting reading not really fiction      but not really solid doctrinally? How would you describe it?</li>

<p>I found this article fascinating, particularly in light of the statements by LDS apostles and prophets about the destruction of the traditional family.  I wonder how everyone here reacts as they read the article and the quotes I&#8217;ve excerpted.</p>
<p><em>So, what are your thoughts about the rising number of out-of-wedlock births &#8211; and the pending death of &#8220;illegitimacy&#8221; when it comes to marriage and childbirth?  Which quote above struck you as the most interesting &#8211; and did any of them concern you more than the others?<br />

<p><span style="Arial;">There has been a great deal of speculation about this on the bloggernacle. Could it be that Mormons have this penned up curiosity busting to get out (excuse the pun again). The internet has made pornography just a click away, not like in the days when you had to ask a grocery clerk to pull a magazine out from underneath the counter. </span></p>
<p><span style="Arial;">I sometimes wonder with all the emphasis on staying away from drugs, alcohol, pornography if it is causing a worse problem by bringing it to the fore front constantly to members minds.<br />

<p><span style="Arial;">For example don’t think of Christi Brinkley in a red dress, don’t think about hot percolated coffee, or an ice-cold beer. Could it be the more we constantly emphasize something the more good people who have been living a life of restricted behaviour all their lives start to feel they can’t do that forever without blowing up, then they cave in or take it underground?</span></p>

<p><span style="#000000;"><span style="Arial;">Another view is of inoculation especially when it comes to nakedness or nudity. Christian nudist views are “Sexual decadence such as pornography and <a title="Pedophilia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pedophilia"><span style="#000000;">pedophilia</span></a> (paedophilia) is the direct result of a lack of exposure to nudity in childhood (particularly of the same approximate age). This is most likely to occur when combined with other factors such as extreme parental attitudes (e.g. body shame) and social isolation. They believe that those that are raised their entire lives within Christian naturism should not have any temptation<a title="Temptation" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temptation"></a> to engage in such behaviour “such as pornography.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="#000000;"><span style="Arial;">Their experience and testimony is that complete nakedness does not incite individuals to lustful thoughts, unlike for example, a revealing skimpy top that exposes a good deal of a woman&#8217;s cleavage or a very short mini-skirt. When naked, all body parts are seen as equal and non-sexualised. When clothed, the focus is on the private parts that are partly revealed and thus objectified and sexualised</span></span></p>

<p>Please take the time to read the entire article, since it provides their justification for this proposal &#8211; and because I think it is very well written, regardless of agreement or disagreement with particular points in it.</p>
<p>My question is very simple:</p>
<p>Would this compromise work &#8211; for both &#8220;sides&#8221; of the issue?  Could you personally accept it?  Do you think those with whom you disagree would be able to accept it?  Why or why not?  Which group would have a harder time accepting it &#8211; and why?</p>
<p>If you think this would not work, is there a different compromise that you think would work?</p>

It covers DC 3 and 10 and a bunch of JS-H. While I did cover most of the scriptures included in the lesson I went a completely different direction with it. <p>Joseph was praying for forgiveness the night that Moroni came because he had become a lazy prankster who liked to dig for buried treasure. He knew he was not someone who would be expected to be a Prophet&#8211;there was nothing exceptional about him. He was not preparing himself very well for any great work.</p>
<p><em>But it was OK. God was going to use him anyway. Moroni comes to see him.<br />

Then he meets Emma while employed digging for a long lost Spanish silver mine down by Harmony and instead of getting a real job and making himself respectable, he just dishonors Emma&#8217;s family and runs off with her to get married without blessing or permission. This was a selfish and impulsive act contrary to one of the 10 commandments. Can you imagine how he would be lauded in the Church today if he had stayed for a year working on a local farm proving himself to get Emma&#8217;s parents permission. But we largely ignore the elopement.</p>
<p><em>But it was OK. God was going to use him anyway. He gets the plates.<br />

Then he gives the 116 pages to Martin after not taking no for an answer and a lifetime of Father Lehi&#8217;s work is gone in an instant. All Lehi&#8217;s blood sweat and tears put into his record are thrown down the drain because Joseph is a stubborn and disobedient sod.</p>
<p><em>But it was OK. God was going to use him anyway. He got the plates back and finished the rest of the book and the Small Plates of Nephi cover the gap in the story (to a certain extent).<br />
</em><br />
The lesson covered the bringing forth of the Book of Mormon, but I taught the lesson of how Joseph kept failing during the process of bringing for the Book of Mormon (I only mentioned the elopement in passing) and how <em>that was OK because he repented and the work of God rolled forward</em>.</p>
<p>One cannot read Sections 3 and 10 honestly and think anything other than Joseph&#8217;s falling from his calling was not only possible but might have seemed at times likely. The doctrine of the Prophet not ever being able to lead the Church astray comes much latter. (It is found in the excerpted conference talks by Wilford Woodruff after the Manifesto in the PofGP.) In 1828 and the years following, it probably seemed likely to even Joseph that he would be rejected.</p>
<p>I also find it interesting that he is directly reproved in Section 3 verse 4 for his &#8220;carnal desires&#8221;. It is no surprise that later it is precisely his carnal desires leading to Fanny Alger and Marinda Knight and so many others that lead so many of the early Church leaders to conclude he was a fallen Prophet and leave his side.</p>
<p>I have a testimony that despite all Joseph&#8217;s weaknesses&#8211;including being too often a petty dictator and horny lustmonger&#8211;he was the Lord&#8217;s chosen. He made many mistakes, many serious mistakes. They ended up costing him his life. But his mistakes did not frustrate the purposes of God. The restoration happened, imperfectly, but it happened.</p>
<p>And so today the Church rolls forward. Imperfectly (very very imperfectly) but it rolls forward. Some cannot abide the imperfections. I don&#8217;t blame them. Sometimes I want to join them. Often even. <em>But no imperfections, not matter how ugly or pervasive, can stop the work of God entirely. </em>It is too hard for me to remember that truth.</p>
<p>I love Joseph Smith. I want to slap him upside the head for being so often a total idiot. But I love him just the same.</p>
<p>This is where I am at today anyway.</p></div>
