News about Ike on cnn.com gives some up to date information on what is happening there. I wanted to open a thread for those on the ground to discuss what’s going on (if you have power!) and for those with loves ones in the area to comment and discuss.
A friend says:
“We lost power some time in the middle of the night. It’s clear enough that we ventured out in the car (although it seemed unwise to me, I went along with it because I was going stir crazy). There’s no power anywhere in town . . . except for my office. And we’re 130 miles NORTH of Houston. I don’t know how people are doing down there.
“We have a big tree down in the backyard and branches all over the place. We’ve been watching a 6 foot snake slither around on our back porch all morning (gross). The winds blew our trampoline onto the car, but it’s okay. As we were driving out of the neighborhood, we saw someone’s house completely crushed by a huge tree from their neighbor’s house across the street, so we are feeling lucky.
“The real question is . . . are we blessed?? Or are we just lucky? After seeing our neighbor’s house, I’m feeling like we were lucky. How could I possibly think we were blessed while they were . . . cursed?”
Here are a few photos of the damage:

I have a friend who left Galveston Thursday morning and went to San Antonio. She tried to keep positive saying “if we lose the house, then I am going to just take it as an opportunity to ‘re-decorate’.”
I was just there last week at our office. We’ll be shut down until Wednesday there due to the storm, evacuations, and minor damage to our facility.
We were planning on going to the Houston temple this week–so if any one has info on when/whether it will be open, I would appreciate it!
We were in Galveston for the Labor Day weekend. Usually we go for the fourth of July. Left early as my wife was concerned about evacuation traffic and Gustav. So, I packed a white shirt and a tie and did not get to use them.
Made me sad to see what Ike did.
http://www.topix.com/hurricane/hurricane-ike — I’d have never guessed that was an LDS site. How did the Church get involved?
I had looked at the forums (current list copied)

and the “about us”
and had just missed that it was LDS. I didn’t mean to challenge the Houston LDS at all, even if I do live a bit north in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex.
I know we evacuated all the people who work for my people and closed the offices down so they could get out early. Hope everyone made it through ok.
I switched to cnn.com. Topix is an aggregator with an LDS section among other sections. Not very well managed from an LDS perspective.
These pix from cnn are pretty scary.
