Sunstone is a unique organization within the Mormon intellectual world. For more than forty years it has published a magazine and annually convened symposiums of many varieties, hosting voices from all over the Mormon spectrum. It has faced many challenges through the years but is now thriving again, continuing to fill niches that only it can do.
In this episode, Sunstone magazine’s editor, Stephen Carter, and it outreach director and symposium planner, Lindsay Hansen Park, join Mormon Matters host Dan Wotherspoon for an overview of the organization and what it’s up to now, plus an introduction to some of the highlights of the upcoming Salt Lake Sunstone Symposium, which will be held in the University of Utah union building from 29 July to 1 August.
If you haven’t yet signed up for this year’s symposium, we hope this will push you over the edge! And if you can’t attend, may it whet your appetite for watching the sessions that will stream, and/or ordering audio recordings that will be available soon!

Sounds good, guys. I live out East, so I hadn’t been planning to come, but the stars aligned last weekend, and I threw my hat in. I went to a single session almost 20 years ago, and I’ve read some of the published material. Otherwise, it’ll be my first. Looking forward to it. Too many good sessions; I’ll have to miss some to attend others, so I’m glad you’ll post them all later.
FUN, Tiani! So glad the universe cooperated. Be sure to say hello if/when you see me!
Q: What is the main thing keeping you going now?
A: Money … Money that comes from heaven.
Does Sunstone make its financial statements public?
It would be interesting to know if that money from heaven is coming from many small donors or a few large donors.
Does the LDS Church provide any funding to Sunstone?
“Sunstone Mormons drink coffee” Ugh.
SOME Mormons drink coffee, including Brigham Young. Interesting comment from Lindsay….. Is there ANOTHER Church besides the one located in Utah or the States? Sure there is one. There is another narrative in that Church although some of the issues that have become a dividing point in the Church are also present.
